larry west johnson

 

Larry West Johnson, age 75, a former long time Bridgeman Street, Barre resident, died Friday, May 11, 2007, at his home on Laurel Mountain Estate Blvd. in Blairsville, GA.  Born on January 23, 1932 in Phoenix, AZ, he was the son of E. Herbert and Winona Mae (Griffith) Johnson.  From September of 1950 to July of 1952, he served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict with the 172nd Regiment, 43rd Division.  On August 17, 1952, he married Constance A. Folsom in the United Methodist Church in Northfield, VT.  Following their marriage, they made their home in Waltham, MA and Hammond/Highland, IN before moving to Barre.  In 2006, they moved to Blairsville, GA.  In earlier years, Larry was employed as an industrial engineer at International harvester, Rand McNally, and Wallace Press.

Larry was a thirty-nine year member of the Barre Congregational Church where he served as Deacon, a Sunday school teacher and church auditor.  After moving to Blairsville, he became a member of the mountain Presbyterian Church.  Larry enjoyed reading, traveling, current events, and especially spending time with his family.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Reynold O. Johnson and a brother-in-law, Julian A. Matte.

Survivors include his wife, Constance Johnson of Blairsville, GA; two sons, Russell Kendall Johnson and his wife, Deborah of Decatur, GA and Kerrick Lance Johnson and his wife, Mary Ann of Barre; four daughters, Lauren Jeanne Bisson and her husband, Ronald of Walden, VT; Erika Leigh McGilley and her husband, Donald of Rockport, ME, R. Winona Johnson and her companion, Paul Tasetano of Williamstown, VT, and Marilyn “Peggy” Johnson and her companion, Jonathan Wheeler of Barre; an “adopted” son and daughter, Anwar and Sabina Shaik; nineteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert Johnson and his wife, Bertha of Woodbury, VT and Richard K. Johnson and his wife, Judith of Barre; a sister, Marilyn M. matte of Hernando, FL; a sister-in-law, Carmen Johnson of Johnson City, TN; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, May 20, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville with the Rev. Travis Adams officiating.  A memorial Service will take place at a later date in the Barre Congregational Church.  Interment will take place with full Military Honors at the Vermont Veterans’ memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.  Contribution in his memory may be made to the Regency Hospice of Northeast Georgia, PO Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546 or to Habitat For Humanity.

bertha elizabeth totherow

 

Bertha Elizabeth Totherow, age 97, of Marble, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2007 at Murphy Medical Center.  Mrs. Totherow was born Friday, September 3, 1909 in Union County GA to the late reverend M.L. Burns and the late Etta Hawkins Burns.  Bertha was a homemaker and loving mother who raised nine children and enjoyed quilting, working in her flowers and garden.  She was a member of the Maltby Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by husband, John Wesley Totherow; daughters, Willa Nell Laney and Nancy Sue Stiles; sons, J.D. Totherow and Talmadge Totherow.

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Blanch & Wayne Millsaps of Sylva; daughter & son-in-law, Helen & L.T. Farmer of marble; daughter, Geneva Hayth of Peachtree; son & daughter-in-law M.L. & Laverne Totherow of Blairsville; son & daughter-in-law, Dempsey & Katrina Totherow of marble; twenty-six grandchildren; and thirty-four great grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Maltby Baptist Church with the Reverend Dallas Crowder and Reverend Kenny White officiating.  Music was by Medra Palmer.  Interment followed in the Maltby Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Grandsons.

veda mae weaver

 

Mrs. Veda Mae Weaver, age 39, of Cumming formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, may 12, 2007 in the Emory Hospital following a sudden illness.  Mrs. Weaver was born on June 19, 1967 in Union County, the daughter of James Wayne Weaver and Susan Elaine Gibson Weaver.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Wayne Weaver and grandmothers, Frankie Fortenberry and Ila Mae Weaver.  Mrs. Weaver was a member of Coosa United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Weaver are her fiancé’, Greg Claus of Cumming, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Jim Levi of Blairsville; one son, Jesse Gibson of Blairsville; step-son, Cody Gibson of Blairsville; mother, Elaine Alexander of Blairsville; father and step-mother, James and Karen Weaver of Calhoun; grandfather, Doyle Fortenberry of Blairsville; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Pam and Jerry Madden of Iowa, Roberta Weaver of Young Harris, Janice Weaver of Big Rapids, MI; step-sister, Melissa Smith of Niceville, FL; two half brothers, James Weaver of Dalton, Nicholas Weaver of Calhoun; three grandchildren, Sierra Weaver, James and Savannah Levi; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, may 15, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Katie Strals officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Nicholas Weaver, Jim Levi, Cody Gibson, Chad Gibson, Boyd Weaver and Burt Carter.  Interment followed in the Coosa Methodist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may e made to defray medical and funeral expenses in Mrs. Weaver’s memory.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Monday evening after 6 p.m.

clyaton brown

 

Mr. Clayton Brown, age 84, native of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, ay 10, 2007.  Mr. Brown was born Thursday, November 30, 1922 in Union County, GA to the late Henry Franklin Brown and the late Collesta Thomason Brown.  He was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church, Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114, F & AM, and The Lions Club.  Mr. Brown was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was held as a P.O.W. during WWII in Germany.  For his service to our country Mr. Brown was awarded The Purple Heart, among other medals.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Lance Brown; and three brothers, Paul, Harmon and Emory Brown.

Survivors include: son & daughter-in-law, Gary C. and Maria Brown of Canton, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Edwina B. and Tim Garrison of Blairsville; brothers, Homer Brown of Rockmart, GA, and Barney Brown of Blairsville; sisters, Ellen Collins of Blairsville, Ethel Self of Columbia, SC, Ruby Sexton of Blairsville, Cleo Hooper of Hayesville, NC, Connie Galloway of Gastonia, NC, and Frankie Dunaway of Rome, GA; granddaughter: Kristi Brown of Houston, TX; grandsons: Clay Brown of Canton, GA; Chad Rich and Rev. Trint Rich, both of Blairsville; great-grandsons: Lance Rich, Cayden Rich and Trevor Norman; several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Zollinger officiating.  Masonic rites were conducted by Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114.  Music was provided by Bill Collins, Buddy Hunter, and Mac McGuire; and pianist, Martha Collins.  Interment followed in Union memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors conducted by the North Georgia Honor Guard.  Serving as pallbearers were members of Allegheny Masonic Lodge.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Friday, May 11.

Mr. Tollie Harry Bass, II, age 51, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007 at his home.  Mr. Bass was a native of Fort Pierce, FL, and was a member of port St. Lucie First Baptist Church.  He had been living in Blairsville since 1995.

Surviving family members include his son, Benjamin Bass, of Ft. Pierce; his parents, James W. and Betty S. Bass of Blairsville; sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne B. and Thomas DeBusk, of Coco, FL: and brother, Eric H. Bass, of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 19, 2007, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Bill Earnest officiating.  The family will recieve friends Saturday from 3 until 4 p.m.

ethel rosalee gibson

 

Ethel Rosalee Gibson, age 81, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Ethel was born Tuesday, February 9, 1926 in Union County Georgia, to the late Paul Gibson and the late Nellie Brown Gibson.  She was a member of liberty Baptist Church.

Survivors include: brothers, John Earl Gibson and James H. Gibson, both of Blairsville; brother, Buck Gibson of Young Harris, GA; sisters, Betty Gibson Taylor, Lilly Vee Gibson Adams and Aileen Gibson McArthur, all of Blairsville; several nieces and nephews also survive, along with many friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, may 11, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Liberty Baptist Church with Rev. Brent Chatham, Rev. Guy Bradley and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Music was provided by Liberty Baptist Church Choir, and nieces and nephews.  Interment followed in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following: Mark Adams, Chris Adams, Stephen Adams, Dustin McArthur, Mark Alexander and Tyler Million.  Honorary pallbearers included the following gentlemen: Ryan Brown, Nichols Million, Josh Colwell, Jamie Gibson, Jeremy Holloway, James Rowe and Paul Alexander.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Thursday, May 10.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family suggests that donations may be made to Liberty Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Mr. Glenn Dockery, age 75, of Ivy Log Rd., Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2067 at his home.  Mr. Dockery was born on October 1, 9132 in Clay County, NC, the son of the late Caney Dockery and the late Hattie Miller Dockery.  He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Teems, Pearl Owenby and Stella Giles; three brothers, homer, Elmer and Ed Dockery.  Mr. Dockery was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Dockery are his wife of thirty-seven years, Katie Owens Dockery of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Pamela Dockery of Pulaski, TN; four sisters and one-brother-in law, Opal Wooten of Duluth, GA, Valeria and Fred Rogers of Fostoria, OH, Verda Anderson of Young Harris, Roxie Owenby of Blairsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Vergal and Mary Dockery of Young Harris; two grandchildren, Taylor and Blaine Dockery; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 11, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by The Wilson Family.  Serving as pallbearers were Mr. Dockery’s nephews.  Interment followed in Long Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Mrs. Vena Estelle “Pat” Nichols, age 87 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home.  Mrs. Nichols was born Monday, November 24, 1919 in White County, GA to the late Luther Gerdene Satterfield and the late Amanda Elizabeth Cain Satterfield.  She was a member of Yahoola Baptist Church in Dahlonega, GA.  She was a giving person and supported the Native American Orphanages, Boys Town and Jews for Jesus.  She was a Riveter at Bell Bomber Aircraft during WWII.  She was preceded in death by husband, James Howard Nichols; brothers, Ralph Satterfield and sister, Ada Bruner.

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Jean and Tommy Rogers; daughter, Micah Nichols, son & daughter-in-law, Tim and Julia Nichols; daughter, Jamie Burbage; daughter, Jackie Nichols of all of Blairsville, GA; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 1 p.m. from the Yahoola Baptist Church Cemetery in Dahlonega with Rev. Lymon Caldwell officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

robert brown

 

Mr. Robert Brown, age 79, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.  Mr. Brown was born Wednesday, August 31, 1927 in Union County, Georgia to the late Jim Brown and the late Pearl Weaver Brown.  He attended Revival Baptist Church and was a member of Dooley Masonic Lodge #367, F & AM.  He was preceded in death by his son, Ricky brown; and sisters, Maybelle Ledford and Wilma Morgan.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Brown of Blairsville; a sister, Adell Henson, also of Blairsville; several nieces and nephews also survive, along with many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with rev. Tommy Seay officiating.  Music was provided by Scott and Tammy lance and the Ladie’s Trio.  Interment followed in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Tim Young, Randy Ledford, Mike Duvall, Robert Debty, David Hemphill and Tracy Henderson.  The family received friends at the funeral home after 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 13.
