Mr.
Jess Payne, age 80 of Lafayette, GA, formerly of Blairsville, GA,
passed away
Friday, May 16, 2008 at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN. Mr. Payne was born Tuesday, June 21, 1927 in
Union County, GA, to the late Hershel and Callie Payne.
He was a member of the New Martin’s Creek Baptist
Church. Jess was preceded in death by
his wife, Willie Chastain Payne.
Survivors
include: son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Susie Payne of Chatsworth,
GA; son
and daughter-in-law, Brice and Karen Payne of Dalton, GA; son and
daughter-in-law, Stacy and Emily Payne of Commerce, GA; son and
daughter-in-law, Anthony and Martha Payne of Lafayette, GA; daughter
and
son-in-law, Renee and David Corbin, also of Lafayette; daughter, Jenee
Moses of
Chatsworth; and grandchildren: Christian Ball, Carrie Miller, Justin
Payne,
Candice Payne, Alicia Davis, Lisa Smith, Kim Jackson, Tiffany Payne,
Tasha
Corbin, Tyler Corbin and Matthew Walker; 12 great-grandchildren also
survive.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 3 p.m.
from the New Martin’s Creek Baptist Church with rev. Paul Ray Morgan
and Rev.
Aud Brown officiating. Music was
provided by Traci Rogers and Tony Ledford.
Interment followed in New Martin’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were the following
gentlemen: Terry Miller, Matthew Walker, Ronald Deyton, Kenneth Deyton,
Marshall Newman and Wayne Deyton. The
family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, May
17.

Mr.
Charles Wilbur Bird, Jr., age 79, of Deaver Rd., Blairsville formerly
of Union
City, GA, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at his home following a
brief
illness. Mr. Bird was born on March 24,
1929 in Taliaferro County, GA, the son of the late Charles Wilbur Bird,
Sr. and
the late Irene Esther Morgan Bird. He
retired from Bell South Telephone Co. in 1987 with over thirty-six
years of service. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Army of the
Korean war. Mr.
Bird was a member of union City Masonic
Lodge #600
F&AM and also a member of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by a daughter,
Debbie Bird in 1966. Mr. Bird was a
member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr.
Bird are his loving wife of fifty-six years, Doris Deaver Bird of
Blairsville;
two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Rick Maddox of Rex, GA,
Jackie and
Tim Caufman of Newnan, GA; one sister and brother-in-law, Janelle and
Bill
Steen of port Orange, FL; five grandchildren, Jamie and Bryant
Summerour,
Christi and “J” Bybee, Susan Maddox, Tami and Chris DeLong and Courtney
Caufman; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Summerour, Jack Bybee and
Ricky
Maddox; many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday, may 17, 2008 at 10
a.m. from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with the rev. Tony
Black officiating. Interment and graveside
services were held on
Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Holly Hill memorial park Cemetery in
Fairburn, GA
with graveside services conducted by the Union City Masonic Lodge #600. The family met with friends at the Mountain
View funeral Home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m. and also at the
Parrott
Funeral Home in Fairburn on Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Mr.
Cecil “John” Ray Garrett, age 57, of Hedrick Rd., Blairsville formerly
of
Ranger, GA passed away on Thursday May 15, 2008 following an extended
illness. Mr. Garrett was born on November
10, 1950 in
McDonough, GA, the son of the late John Bunyon Garrett and the late
Grace
Louella McDaniel Garrett. He was a
loving father and grandfather and will be missed by his family and
friends. Mr. Garrett was a member of
First Covenant Church.
Surviving Mr.
Garrett are one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Wayne Parks of
Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerome and Bambi Garrett of
Cartersville, GA; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian and Clinton
Newborn
of Fairmount, GA, Helen and Harvey Young of White, GA; three brothers
and two
sisters-in-law, Edward and Debbie Garrett of Waleska, GA, Jerry and
Martha
Garrett of Blairsville, Larry Garret, of GA; ten grandchildren, Alisha,
Ashley,
Sandra, Cody, Meagan, Chris, Tyler, Chelsey, Taylor and Kendal; many
other
relatives and friends also survive.

services were held on Saturday, may 17, 2008 at 2
p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tony black and Rev.
Chad Sisum officiating. Special music was
presented by Rev. Luther
Thomas. The following gentlemen served
as pallbearers, Travis Redford Adam Gardner, Chris Webb, Cody Zachary,
Robert
Garrett and Steve Lovelady. Interment
followed in the Henderson Family Cemetery.

Mildred
L. Ledford, age 74, of Gospel Circle, Hayesville, NC died Saturday, may 17, 2008 at her residence.
A native of Union County, GA, she was the
daughter of the late Sam and Ailene Nations Kirkland.
She had resided in Hayesville since 1937 and
was a member of the South Hayesville Church of God.
She was a homemaker and a minister for over
50 years at service local churches.
Mildred was a very loving mother, grandmother and great
grandmother and
a tireless prayer warrior, who loved to cook and help other people. She was preceded inn death by her sister,
Evelyn Matheson.
She is
survived by her husband, Buford Ledford of the home; four sons, Ronnie
Ledford
of Marshall, NC, Kenny Ledford and wife Nancy of Hayesville, NC,
Charles Wayne
Ledford and wife Sandy of Murphy, NC and Dwayne Ledford and wife Angel
of
Blairsville, GA; four daughters, Bonnie Lou Monkus and husband Allen of
Hayesville, NC, Kathleen Pierce and husband Wayne of Hayesville, NC,
Glenda
Matusewicz and husband Rick of Marshall, NC and Dinah Davis and husband
John of
Hayesville, NC; three brothers, Marshall Kirkland and wife Juanita of
Blairsville, GA, Waymon Kirkland and wife Frances of Cartersville, GA
and Sammy
Kirkland and wife Marilyn of Michigan; 14 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2008
at the Townson Rose, Frank rose Sr. memorial Chapel in Hayesville, NC
with her
son Ronnie Ledford and daughter Dinah Davis officiating.
Music was provided by Ronnie Ledford, Vicki
Coker and John Davis. Interment was in
Greenlawn Memorial gardens in Murphy, NC.
Pallbearers were the grandsons, Capt. John Brian Davis, III,
Roger
Ledford, Michael Ledford, Joe Ledford, C.B. Ledford and great grandson,
Timothy
Shaffer. Honorary pallbearer was her
granddaughter, Ensign Christie Davis. The
family received friends from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008

9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, may 20, 2008

Mrs.
Dortha “Dottie” Satterfield Dyer, age 82, of Blairsville, GA, passed
away
following a brief illness on Saturday, May 17, 2008, in Piedmont
Hospital in
Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Dyer was born Friday
August 28, 1925, in Hamilton County, TN, a daughter of the alt John
Grady
Satterfield and Annie Potts Satterfield.
Mrs. Dyer had lived most of her life in Union County, GA, and
was a
member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death, besides her parents, were her husband,
Virgil
Dyer, and a brother, John Satterfield.
Surviving family
members include daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Andrew Thompson, of
Cumming,
GA; son and daughter-in-law, James and Doris Bridges, of Blairsville;
sister,
Roberta Coker, of Blairsville; sister, Louise Howell, of Brooks, GA;
grandchildren: Keith Kilby, Darrell bridges, Darin Bridges, Shannon
Whicker;
great grandchildren: Nicole Kilby, Brittany Floyd, Kali Bridges, Gracie
Bridges, Emma and Elyssa Whicker; great-great-granddaughter, Carson
Floyd.

services were held Monday, May 19, 2008 at 2 p.m.
from Ivy Log Baptist Church with rev. Ray Potts and Rev. Tony Black
officiating. Interment followed in Zebulon
