Mr. Carlos Leon Phillips, age 64, of Andrews, passed away Thursday, May 17, 207 at Park Ridge Hospital in Chattanooga.  Carols was born Sunday, May 9, 1943 in Union County, GA to the late Willie Martin Phillips and the late Arrie Sosebee Phillips.  He loved spending time with people, trading, liked to fish and was a loving grandpaw.  He was preceded in death by wife, Velma Phillips; daughters Lorie Ann Phillips and Penny Sue Phillips.

Survivors include: wife, Pansy (Ann) Beaver Phillips; son & wife, Leon & Annette Phillips of Gainesville; son, Ray Phillips of Gainesville; daughter & husband, Cheri & Dennis Kile of Hayesville; daughter & husband, Terry & David Patton of Hayesville; sister & brothers-in-law, Shirley & James Grindle of Cleveland, GA; brother-in-law J.L. Grizzle of Gainesville; granddaughter, Heather Phillips, grandson; Dalton Phillips; grandson & wife, Jason & Christy Fox; granddaughter, Nicole Fox and friend, Michael Matheson; great grandson, Logan Whitener, great-granddaughter, Shayna Matheson; great-granddaughter, Kelli Conley; nieces & nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 20, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Jerry Beavers officiating.  Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens in Blairsville.  Serving as pallbearers were: David Patton, Michael Matheson, Kenneth Beavers, Bobby Foster, Chris Mecreary and Greg Stratton.

joan creamer

 

Mrs. Joan Creamer, age 76 of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Blue Ridge, passed away Friday, May 18, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home.  Mrs. Creamer was born Thursday, September 4, 1930 in Medford, MA to the late Frank Montpleasant and the late Lillian Forstner Montpleasant.  Mrs. Creamer was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hayesville.

Survivors include: husband, William E. Creamer of Blairsville, GA; daughter, Lynn Creamer of Lewisburg, WV; son, Bill Creamer III of Panama City, FL; son, Michael E. Creamer of Baton Rouge, LA; daughter, Patricia Martin of Buford, GA and grandchildren, David, Kristen and Rachel Garringer, Ashley Martin, Cail Daly and Casey and Christopher Creamer.

A Memorial Mass is scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Blue Ridge, GA.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601.

Wade Holbrooks

 

Mr. Wade Holbrooks, age 66 of Simpsonville, SC, formerly of Blairsville, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2007 at the Greenville Medical Center.  Mr. Holbrooks was born Friday, April 4, 1941 in Blairsville, to the late Pete Holbrooks and the late Nancy Lorene Rich Holbrooks.  He was of the Baptist faith and was a Teamster forklift operator at a warehouse in Mogador, OH for 25 years.  He retired in 1991 and moved to Simpsonville in 1994 where he became a part time landscaper and gardener in the community.  He developed additional health problems, which greatly reduced his activities.  Mr. Holbrooks had been fighting a battle with cancer this last year and was being treated for diabetes and Parkinson’s disease for the past few years.

Survivors include: his beloved wife of 33 years, Karhryn Holbrooks of Simpsonville, SC; sons, Jon Eric of Dunn, NC and Marc Christopher of Portsmouth, VA; sister, Barbara Morris of Morganton, GA and one grandchild, Christopher.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 20, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Davenport officiating.  Music was provided by The Faith Singers.  Interment was in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jerry Martin, David Cox, Tony Dinatalle, Steve Kimsey and his sons, Eric and Mark.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to The National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave/Bob Hope Rd., Miami, FL 33136-1494

william short mcguire

 

Mr. William Short McGuire, age 92, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Monday, May 14, 2007 at his home following a brief illness.  Mr. McGuire was born on November 28, 1914 in Atlanta, GA, the son of the late Samuel H. McGuire and the late Florence Short McGuire.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Wynn.  He attended Tech High and the University of the South in Sewanee, TN.  He served aboard an Army hospital ship in the Mediterranean during World War II, going to Italy, France, and North Africa.  He was a Broker with McGuire Realty in Atlanta for more than fifty years and a member of the Atlanta Board of Realtors, where he served as Chairman of the Appraisal Committee for several years.  He was a member of the Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta.

Surviving Mr. McGuire is his loving wife, Kathleen Gibson McGuire of Blairsville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy M. and Alan Hall of Marietta, GA and Linda M. and Richard Johnson of marble Hill, GA; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 19, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bill Honaker officiating.  Visitation immediately followed the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shady Grove Cemetery Fund, Inc., 115 Dairy Farm Road, Murphy, NC 28906 or to Regency Hospice, 236 South Main Street, Hiawassee, GA 30546.

geraldine k. phebus

 

Mrs. Geraldine K. Phebus, age 88, of Blairsville, GA passed away Sunday, May 13, 2007, at her home.  Mrs. Phebus was born Sunday, May 26, 1918, in Baltimore, MD, a daughter of the late George Grau and Anna Knop Grau.  Mrs. Phebus moved to Blairsville in 1972.  She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville; St. Williams Catholic Church in Murphy, NC and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Silver Springs Shores, FL.  Her husband, Mr. Oliver B. “Ollie” Phebus, Jr., passed away in 1984.

Gerry was a legal secretary for the law firm of Choate and Sinclair in Miami, FL.  The Honorable Emmett Choate was appointed Federal Judge for the District of South Florida and Gerry continued as his personal secretary, along with longtime family friend and Blairsville resident Lorena Mathis Long, until she retired in 1968.  Gerry always enjoyed, and was quite persuasive, arguing the law with anyone, including some of the best lawyers and judges in the profession.  She loved sports, including golf and football; reading, playing cards, bird-watching at Lake Nottley and spending time with her family, including her 3 children, 7 grandchildren and her great-grandson.  Gerry was a member of the Chatuge Shores Golf Course in Hayesville, NC, and Silver Springs Shores Country Club in Silver Springs Shores, FL, where she played golf regularly with her late husband Ollie until 1984, and with her friends and family until 2006.

Surviving family members include three children and their spouses: Oliver B. “Skip” Phebus, III, and Ann M. Phebus of Gainesville, GA; Charles Bernard “Bernie” and Jean P. Phebus, of Boca Raton, FL; and Kathryn Ann Phebus Jones and Jeffrey P. Jones, Sr., of Alpharetta, GA and Blairsville; a sister, Dorothy Martin, of Baltimore; seven grandchildren: Alexandra Phebus Tibar, Charles Phebus, Jeffrey P. Jones, Jr., Meredith A. Phebus, Jason Phebus, Lawrence O. Jones and Laura M. Jones; great-grandson, Jasper Zane Phebus also survives.  Many nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends also survive in Florida, Georgia, and Maryland.

Memorial Mass is scheduled for Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville, with Father George Kloster officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Regency Hospice of Northeast Georgia, P.O. Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546 (706) 896-1251, or to your local hospice.

nancy sue tinsley

 

Mrs. Nancy Sue Tinsley, age 51, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.  Mrs. Tinsley was born Monday, July 18, 1955 in Goldsboro, NC, a daughter of Wilma Knight Hogan and the late William H. “Jake” Hogan.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jason Armsden and her father, Mr. Hogan.

Surviving family members include her son, Ryan Tinsley, of Lawrenceville, GA; her daughter, Kimberly Tinsley, of Blairsville; her mother, Wilma Hogan, of Blairsville; a step-daughter, Marcie Tinsley, of Senoia, GA; grandchildren: Aedan Tinsley, Brittany Tinsley, and Carissa Pierce.  Many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive.

Memorial services are scheduled for Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at 2 p.m. from Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Tucker, GA, with Rev. Bill Earnest officiating.
