Mr. Jessie Weldon White age 75 of Murphy Hwy., Blairsville passed away on Friday May 20, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. White was born on Sept. 13, 1929 in Fannin County, the son of the late John White and late Lassie Rhodes White.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ulan, Raymond and Arlan White and by one sister, Martha Morris.  Mr. White was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. White are his loving wife of fifty-five years, Georgie Conner White of Blairsville, two daughters and one son in law, Lillian Pauline Byers of Young Harris, Mary Ruth and Raymond Byers of Blairsville, one son and daughter in law, Rev. Danny Weldon and Donna White of Blairsville, three brothers and sister in laws, Earl and Norma White of Epworth, Lewin and Blanche White of Blue Ridge, Elvin and Diane White of Murphy, one sister and brother in law, Dolly and Ray Loving of McCaysville, five grandchildren, Bobby Williams, R.L. Byers, DeBronda Byers, Jonathan Byers and Jesse White, seven great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday May 23, 2005 at 3 pm from the New Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.  Special music was presented by Eb and Diane White, Wayne Morgan, and Jonathan Byers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Terry White, Mark Davidson, Dillard Canup, Tommy McAu-liffe, Rusty Greenway and Richard White.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening after 5 pm.

mr. glen e. dills

 

Mr. Glen E. Dills, age 65, of Griffin, GA, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at Portsbridge Hospice in Riverdale.

Mr. Dills was born on March 16, 1940 in Union county, GA, to the late Lon Dills and the late Alma Young Dills.  He lived in Griffin for the past 7 years and prior to moving to Griffin, he lived in Riverdale for 33 years.  Mr. Dills was a retired Union Committee Representative with the United Auto Workers.  Mr. Dills was a member of the Woolsey Baptist Church, and also a member of the Riverdale Masonic Lodge #709, F&AM.

Mr. Dills is survived by his wife, Rose Dills; children and their spouses, Yvonne and Rodney Boles of Jonesboro; Glenda Rose and Sam McCool of Sharpsburg; grandchildren: Samuel Ryan McCool and Sean Glen McCool both of Sharpsburg; sisters, Berta Crisp of Blairsville; and Mary Smart of North Carolina; brother, Wayne Dills, of Lawrenceville; half-sister, Madeline McGugan of South Carolina; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Glen Dills were conducted Friday, May 20, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville; Rev. Tommy Jones officiated.  Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. lucius pierson young

 

Mr. Lucius Pierson Young (Pop-pop), age 81, of Blairsville passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Young was born on Oct. 18, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA., the son of the late Lucius Pierson Young and the late Margarett Ann Everwine Young.  Lucius was a life member of the Woodrow Wilson Chapter #11, of Blairsville, the DAV, 82nd Airborne Association, a member of the 325th Glider Infantry Association, 82nd Airborne.  He was also an active member of six Genealogy and Historical Societies.  He is a purple Heart recipient of WWII serving our country proudly.  Along with many other medals which he received are, Good conduct medal, European African-Middle East Ribbon, distinguished unit badge, combat infantry badge and glider badge.

Mr. Young is survived by his loving wife of forty-three years, Gladys Thompson Young of Blairsville, one daughter, Dianne R. King of Blairsville, one son, William E. Ringel III of TN., brother, Walter H. Young of NJ., sister-in-law, Mae Young of NJ., grandchildren, Kenneth Ringel of Blairsville, Kevin Exner of FL., Danny Ringel of TN., Laura Makuk Holmes of Monroe, GA, Pamela King of Blairsville.  Many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 21, 2005 At 4:00 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Ken Ringel, Bob Frank, James Passmore, Andy Holmes, Gary Young and Bob Eckerdt.  Interment followed in the Georgia National Cemetery at a later date.  The North Georgia Honor Guard conducted military honors.

Mrs. Ophelia Eva Dills, age 85, of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday, may 21, 2005 in Blairsville.  Mrs. Dills was born Thursday, October 23, 1919 in Union County, GA to the late Bud Kendall and the late Nona Jones Kendall.  She was a member of the Liberty Hill United Methodist Church, and a lifelong resident of Union County.

Survivors include husband, Willard Dills of Blairsville; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, James and Yvonne Dills of Marietta, GA and Denny and Leeta Dills of Blairsville; sister, Myrtice Dowdy of Flowery Branch, GA; 4 grandchildren, Rex Dills, Cynthia Dills Darnell, Gary Dills and Brian Dills; 6 great grandchildren, Justin Dills, Katie Darnell, Matthew Darnell, Brandon Dills, Josh Dills and Brooke Dills; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 23, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Charles Black officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelley Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Rex Dills, Gary Dills, Brian Dills, Vester Dills, Buck Dills, and Lester Darnell.  Interment followed in the Liberty Hill Methodist Church Cemetery.

mrs. meredith parham moore

 

Mrs. Meredith Parham Moore, age 74, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2005, in Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Moore was born in Mecklenburg County, NC, on Saturday, August 9, 1930, a daughter of the late Esco Parham and the late Ruby Taylor Parham.  She graduated from Shorter College in 1951, and married William R. Moore in July of 1951.  Spending most of her life in Toccoa, GA, she was an English Literature and Speech teacher.  Mrs. Moore taught in Union County High School, in the Stephens County School system, as well as in Atlanta, Carnesville, and Ocala, FL.  Since 1991, Mrs. Moore had lived in Blairsville, where she was a member of Union County Historical Society, Union County Garden Club, Union County Retired Teachers and had served as Membership Secretary at Coosa United Methodist Church.

Surviving family members are: husband, William R. Moore, of Blairsville; son, Art Moore, of Cumming, GA, and daughter Leigh Orr, of Cumming; two grandchildren, Brent and Zach Orr.

Memorial services are scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2005, at 10 a.m., from Coosa United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jon Herrin and Rev. Earl Bishop officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials be made to either the American Cancer Society, % Sue Upchurch, 4344 Mulkey Gap Road, Blairsville, GA 30512, or to Coosa United Methodist Church Building Fund.

mrs. stephanie lynn sharrock

 

Mrs. Stephanie Lynn Sharrock, age 31, of Blairsville, GA passed away Friday, may 20, 2005 in Blairsville.  Mrs. Sharrock was born Saturday, February 16, 1974 in Fulton County, GA to Herbert and Joyce Holbrooks Teague.  She attended the House of Prayer Interdenominational Church, was a graduate of North Georgia College with a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority and was the recipient of the Union County Teacher of the Year award for 2003.  Mrs. Sharrock was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Joe and Alean Teague; maternal grandparents, C.A. and Bertha Holbrooks; and grandparents-in-law, Jim and Florence Marr.

Survivors include husband, Todd Sharrock of Blairsville; daughter, Sydney Lynn Sharrock of the home; parents, Herbert and Joyce Teague of Blairsville; brother, Joseph Teague of Blairsville; father and mother-in-law, Jim and Sandy Sharrock of Blairsville; brother-in-law, Sean Sharrock of Blairsville; grandparents-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Lewis of Hiawassee; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 23, 2005 at 4 p.m. from House of Prayer Church, with Rev. Tommy Jones, and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Angie Burrell and The New Life Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Bryce Durbin, Ed Durbin, Jonathan Hood, Joseph Teague, Sean Sharrock, and Taggart Fox.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Derrick ernest barrentine

 

Derrick Ernest Barrentine, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, May 16, 2005 at his residence.

Derrick was born in Wilkinson County, GA, to the late James Barrentine and the late Harriet Wilson Barrentine.  He had lived in Jacksonville, FL for 40 years before moving to Blairsville 12 years ago.  He was an Electronic Engineer for the U.S. Government and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta, GA.

Survivors include: wife, Jo Ann Barrentine of the home; daughter, Jenny Ann Grinnell of North Hampton, Mass.; son, Mark Barrentine of Jacksonville, FL; grandsons, Colin Grinnell and Randall Pollard; granddaughter, Sarah Grinnell.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

mr. robert w. (bob) jones

 

Mr. Robert W. (Bob) Jones, age 72, of Blairsville, GA passed away Sunday, may 15, 2005 at home.

Mr. Jones was a native and lifelong resident of Union County, and a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.  He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and traveled as a college exchange student to Athens, Greece.  Bob’s profession was farming and insurance, with farming serving as his first choice.  He often said that he had to sell insurance in order to finance the farm operation.  His motto was “leave the land better than you found it.”

Bob was dedicated to improving Union County and spent tireless hours working for the betterment of the community.  Notable accomplishments include: Georgia State Representative from Union County 1959-1960; President of the Industrial Park Authority, the industrial park in town was named after him: “Robert W. Jones Industrial Park;” Key member of the team that successfully raised funds and established Branan Lodge at Wesley Mountain Village; announcer for high school football games at Mike Colwell Memorial Stadium; member of the Grand Lodge of Georgia, Kiwanis Club and University of Georgia Alumni Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dock and Maude Jones; a brother John Bright Jones, and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Loyd C. Yeargin and Rufus Cearley.  Surviving are his wife, Betty Brown Jones of Blairsville; daughter, Debi Weatherford of Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Lycia Jones of Blairsville; grandson, Christopher Martin; three granddaughters: Ashton, Kelci and Mikala Jones; two sisters: Ruth Cearley of Harrisonburg, VA and Ruby Yeargin of Dalton, GA.  Many other relatives and friends survive to carry his memory.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at First United Methodist Church of Union County with Rev. Jan Devereaux and Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  The theme of the eulogy was Bob’s love for his family and Union County.  Burial occurred at Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

emery warren bedell

 

Mr. Emery Warren Bedell age 97 of Murphy Hwy Blairsville formerly of Murphy, NC passed away on Tuesday May 17, 2005 at his residence following a brief illness.  He had resided in Murphy for over thirty years before moving to Blairsville about eight years ago.  Mr. Bedell was born on April 4, 1908 in Brooklyn, NY.  He retired in 1973 from the Long Island, NY. Electric Company where he was a Switchman.  Mr. Bedell was a veteran of the US Navy of WWII.

Surviving Mr. Bedell are two sons and daughter in laws, Warren and Virginia Bedell of Brevard, NC., Phillip and Beverly Bedell of Rocklin, CA., one granddaughter, Sheri Roberson of Sacto, CA.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday May 31, 2005 at 1:00 pm from the Greenlawn Cemetery in Murphy, NC.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Regency Hospice, P.O. Box 494 Hiawassee, GA. 30546 in Mr. Bedell’s memory.

betty lou pierce tolley

 

Mrs. Betty Lou Tolley went to be with the Lord on May 16, 2005 after an extended illness.  She was a part-time resident of Blairsville, and Naples, FL.  She was born June 25, 1935 in Asheboro, NC.

Mrs. Tolley was a retired CNA of Naples, FL.  She attended The House of Prayer while in Blairsville.  Surviving Mrs. Tolley is her mother Pauline Cuthbertson, Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Victoria Tolley of Frisco, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Robert Wilson of west Palm Beach, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Diann and James Seekell of Naples, FL; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Gail Pierce of Morganton, GA; eight grandchildren: many other relatives also survive.

Memorial services were held Saturday, may 21 at the House of Prayer, Rev. Jerry Helton and Rev. Richard Helms officiating. 

The family requested in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
