Mr. Rod
Garrett, age 72, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010
from
ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
A native of Manius, NY, his family moved to
Bartow, FL in 1946.
He graduated from Summerlin Institute in 1955.
He served in the US Air Force from 1956 to
1960 and was an Air Traffic Controller.
He was retired. He was preceded
in death by his parents, Mildred and Howard Garrett, sisters, Norlyna
(Jeannie)
Gough and Marjorie Harris. Mr. Garrett
was a member of the Providence United Methodist Church.
Surviving
are his wife of forty-nine years, Mary Jane Willson Garrett of
Blairsville,
brothers, Rev. Curt Garrett of Whiting, NJ, Lloyd Garrett and a sister,
Laurie
Benton both of Bartow, FL, ten nieces and nephews, Valerie Kirkland,
Daniel
Benton, Chip Harris, Kim Hendrick, Brian Garrett, all of Bartow, Mark
Garrett
of Seatle (sic), WA, Ben Garrett of Altaloma, CA, David Gough of
Rockwood City,
CA, Lori Fischer of Clino Hills, CA and Lynn Silva of Indianapolis, IN,
many
other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial
service will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the
Providence
Methodist Church with the Rev. Chuck Gillespie and Rev. Earl Bishop
officiating. In lieu of flowers if you
wish, the family
requests that donations may be made to Regency Hospice, PO Box 494
Hiawassee,
GA 30546; or to MDA/ALS in Mr. Garrett’s memory. The
family will meet with friends following
the service.

Mr. James
(Jim) L. Birt, age 71, of Southers Forest Rd., Blairsville passed away
on
Sunday, May 16, 2010 in Union General Hospital following a brief
illness. Mr. Birt was born on Feb. 5, 1939
in Sac City,
IA, the son of the late Lyle Birt and the late Gladys Burns Birt. He was a veteran of the US Navy.
Jim was a member of Teamsters Local #24
Richfield, OH. He was an avid
motorcyclist. Jim loved to travel in his
RV and had visited all fifty states. Mr.
Birt was a member of Coosa United Methodist Church.
Surviving
Mr. Birt are his loving wife of thirty years, Karen D. Birt of
Blairsville,
three sisters and one brother-in-law, Ramona and Ken Averill of
Hibbina, MN,
Joan Birt of Grand Rapids, MN, Rita Parkison of Springfield, OH, two
brothers
and sisters-in-law, Gene and Gloria Birt of Grand Rapids, MN, Jerry and
Jeanette Birt of Seligman, OH, several nieces, nephews, many other
relatives
and friends also survive.
A memorial
service will be held on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 4 p.m. from the
Mountain View
Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family
requests that contributions be made to the Estate of James L.
Birt/Karen D.

Mr. Roy
Dale Wise, age 84, of Jackson Heights, Blairsville, formerly of Palm
Springs,
CA, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010 in the Our Lady of Prepetual
(sic)
Help Cancer Home in Atlanta following an extended illness.
Mr. Wise was born on Sept. 5, 1925 in
Elkhart, IN, the son of the late Fred L. Wise and the late Lucy Viola
Studebaker Wise. He retired as a
machinist from T.R.W. after over thirty-five years of service. He was a veteran of the US Navy in WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary
Frances Easterwood Wise and by four brothers, Fred, Max, Don and Robert
Wise. He was a member of the Knights of
Columbus 4th Degree. Mr. Wise was also a
member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Surviving
Mr. Wise are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Father Stephen and
Patricia
Whitney-Wise of Milwaukie, OR, Father Richard Wise of Blairsville two
daughters, Janet Wise of Chattanooga, TN, Susan Wise of California, two
grandchildren, Joshua Whitney-Wise and Lilly Whitney-Wise, many other
relatives
and friends also survive.
A funeral
mass was held on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. from St. Francis of
Assisi
Catholic Church with Father Richard Wise and Father Stephen
Whitney-Wise officiating. Special music
was presented by Ron
Gaucher. In lieu of flowers if you wish,
the family requests that memorials may be made to Our Lady of Prepetual
(sic)
Help Cancer Home, 760 Pollard Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30315, in memory of Mr.
Wise. Interment followed in St. Clare’s
Memorial garden with the North GA Honor Guard Conducing (sic) military
honors. A visitation was held on Sunday
evening at
the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. The Knights of Columbus presented the Honor
Guard part of the service.
