stephen cole wright, md

Dr. Stephen Wright died peacefully Friday, June 2, 2006 in the Union General Hospital in Blairsville, GA after a long siege of illness.

He retired to this tranquil region from Atlanta after a long and satisfying career as psychiatrist, which covered 28 years in child psychiatry in Miami, Vero Beach, and Melbourne, FL.  In Atlanta, he worked in Alcohol & Drug Rehabilitation, plus a federal program as psychiatric diagnostician for residents of Georgia nursing homes.

A true gentleman with a dry wit, Dr. Wright will long be remembered for his extra-ordinary talent of making people of all ages feel good about themselves.  He has inspired thousands of suffering souls to pull themselves together and to lead stable and productive lives.

The cancerous lower lobe of Dr. Wright’s right lung was removed over twenty years ago.  This put an abrupt end to his smoking, which had begun at age nine; however, not in time to prevent progressively debilitating lunch disease, culminating in severe emphysema and oxygen support the past two years.

The family is eternally grateful for all the loving care provided by Richard Moreland, MD, Cheryl Anderson, MD, and the staffs of Stonehenge Assisted Living Home, Brasstown Manor Assisted Living Home, Union County Nursing Home, Murphy Medical Center, Union General Hospital and Regency Hospice.

Stephen Cole Wright was born in Tacoma, WA, August 24, 1922 to Marian Cole Wright and Frederick L. Wright, MD, a Veterans Administration psychiatrist.  He was the elder brother of Thomas Wright, MD, Child Psychiatrist, and Mary Wright Shugart, both deceased.

Dr. Wright’s education included studies at Lehigh University, Randolph Macon College, Temple Medical School, The University of Pennsylvania.  He was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

His long history of service included appointments under Governors Bryant and Collins to the Florida Childrens Commission, consultantships to numerous Catholic Charities childrens programs, private special education schools, and childrens hospitals.  He taught Neuropsychiatry at the School of Aviation Medicine, Randolph Air Force Base, TX, and taught Child Psychiatry at the University of Miami School of medicine, Coral Gables, FL.

Dr. Wright served the US Army 1943-44 as medical technician, Private First Class.  From 19951-1953 as Captain in the USAF he served as Chief of Service in the Department of Psychiatry at the Randoplh AFB Station Hospital.  He was honorably discharged from both branches.

On the home front, Steve was an avid reader, World War I airplane buff, super fine sports cars owner, clever cartoonist, passionate lover of anything with wings, creator of zany poetry, and poignant odes.  He was a closet drummer, sensitive and astute photographer, a member of the Riverbend Gun club, and the National Gourd Society (!).  He could wield a kitchen paring knife with the best of them, adored “I, Claudius”, and would spoil guest rotten, and could recite limericks, poetry, and hymns from childhood word for word.

A friend’s e-mail noted this past Sunday, “He was a wonderful man with the most gorgeous and mischievous twinkle in his eye.”  A free spirit-early on unabashedly wild-later on wisely tamed.  But a truly great one, never to be forgotten.

The boy Stephen was confirmed April 29, 1935, in Christ Church, Tacoma, WA.  The man Stephen was ordained as a minister in the Lively Stones Fellowship December 6, 1998.

Dr. Wright fathered five children: John Wright of Oklahoma; Stephen Bradford and Mark Wright of Florida’ and Patricia Harrod of Minnesota.  There are 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by nieces Stacey Shugart of South Carolina and Nancy Wright of Pennsylvania; nephews Andrew and Frederick Wright of California.  His wife Constance resides in Blairsville.

A small service was held at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Saturday, June 3, 2006 by Father Wise and Rev. Kathleen McKevitt of Unity Church of the Mountains where Dr. Wright was a member.  A memorial and celebration of life service is being planned for mid July, date to be announced.

The family will also soon announce their preference for memorials donations.
