Mr. Emerson Legg, age 93, of Blairsville, passed away Thursday evening, June 3, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Legg was born November 2, 1910, in Gordon Co. GA, a son of Joseph B. and Candice Totherow Legg.  He lived most of his life in this area and was very well thought of in the community.  He was a member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at New Union Baptist Church for many years.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Payne Legg.

Surviving are his children: Norma Jean and Robert Plumley of Marietta, Buddy and Donnia Legg of Blairsville, David H. and Linda J. Legg of Blairsville, Terry and Tricia Legg of Blairsville, and Cathie and Dwight Copeland of Marietta; a sister, Juanita Helton of Cleveland; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 6, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at the New Union Baptist Church with Rev. Harrison Bradley and Rev. Steve Youngblood officiating.  Music was by the church choir.

Interment was in the church cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Sonny Freeman, Brett Swanson, Kevin Copeland, Darren Legg, Hubert Legg and Marty Payne.

mr. fred t. mcgaha

 

Mr. Fred T. McGaha, age 67, of Fred McGaha Drive, Blairsville, who passed away on Monday, may 31, 2004 in the Spalding Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.  Mr. McGaha was born on January 24, 1937 in Hayesville, NC., the son of the late Jessie McGaha and the late Nellie Meadows McGaha.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Weaver McGaha in 2004, a daughter, Martha McGaha in 1970, a son in law, Robert Ballard in 1999.  Mr. McGaha was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. McGaha are five daughters and four son in laws, Mary and Roger Weaver of Blairsville, Alice Ballard of Blairsville, Katherine and Jerry Cheek of Blairsville, Minnie Jane and Joe Williams of Blairsville, Donna and Alvin Dyer of Young Harris, three sons and one daughter in law, Freddie McGaha of Blairsville, Richard and Felica Johnson of Cumming, Harold Johnson of Lawdy, Florida, two sister, Minnie Shook of Young Harris, Altha Gilbert of Blairsville, one brother, Clyde McGaha of Young Harris, the childrens mother, Estella McGaha of Blairsville, fifteen grandchildren many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by Doug Hogsten.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Russell and Adam Weaver, Joe Williams, Amos Williams, John Barrett, Tony Worley and Dale Weaver.  Interment followed in the Valley Town Cemetery in Andrews, NC.

mrs. helen mae medhurst dayton

 

Mrs. Heken Mae Medhurst Daytin, 74, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2004.

Mrs. Dayton was born in Lincoln Park, MI, on Saturday, June 22, 1929, a daughter of Charles Allen Medhurst and Ada Mae Smith Medhurst.  She had lived in the Blairsville area for 2.5 years, moving here from Miami FL.  Mrs. Dayton was known throughout her life for being a loving mother to her children as well as neighborhood children.  She was of the Methodist faith, and was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel M. Dayton, who passed away in 2000, and a son, Robert Charles Dayton, who passed away in 1995.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Mae Tidwell and Dennis Tidwell of Blairsville; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Dan and Anna Tidwell, of Palm Beach, FL; God great grandson, Victor Elliot Cornier, of Miami FL.

Celebration memorial services were held Sunday, June 6, 2004, at 1 p.m., in Lake Placid, FL at Lake Clay Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that all consider Mrs. Dayton’s wishes, “Please don’t smoke.”  Any memorial bequests may be made to GA Mtns Hospice in Jasper, GA.

may lyndall wilson

 

Ms. Mary Lyndall Willson, age 81, of Suches, passed away Friday, June 4, 2004, at Union General Hospital.

Ms. Wilson was born in Santa Rosa Co., Fl, September 22, 1922, a daughter of Mason and Minnie Pitts Howard.  She was a homemaker and had moved here from Pensacola, FL, approximately a year ago.

Ms. Wilson is survived by a daughter, Sandra Jernigan of Suches, and a son, Bruce Wilson, of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Martha Finch of Pensacola, FL, and Delores Watley of Holt, FL. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends also survive.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Wilson.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, at Faith Chapel in Pensacola, FL with Dale Patterson officiating.  Graveside services were at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Home Cemetery in Hold, FL.

Local arrangements were by Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville.

alastair “mac” mclean

 

Mr. Alastair “Mac” McLean, age 72, of Blairsville, formerly of Marietta, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004.

Born in England in 1931, Mac enjoyed a lifetime of working n the aviation industry. He began his career as a draughtsman in the aircraft design office at Vickers Armstrongs in England.  In 1957, Mac left England for Canada to work as a design engineer in the flight test department for Avro Aircraft Co. in Ontario.  In 1959, he joined Lockheed Martin in Marietta where he was involved in all aspects of aircraft reliability engineering until his retirement in 1993.  A particular highlight of this time was his contribution to the C-5 Galaxy aircraft on June 30l 1968, and through its operational test program.

Mac was proud to become a naturalized US citizen in 1967 and was an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Mac is survived by his long term friends, Jane Robinson; his daughter, Elizabeth; son, Russell; and twin grandsons, Sam and Justin.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
