Mr. Mrs.
Elena “Shovel” Stanley age 56 of Blairsville, GA, passed away
Tuesday,
June 1, 2010 at her residence.
Shovel was
born June 26, 1953 in Blairsville, GA to the late Walter and Rosell
Gibson
Lovell . She was a member of Harmony
Grove Baptist Church and Harmony Grove Baptist Church Sportsman
Ministry and
was preceded in death by sister, Lillian Garrett, brother, Henry Lovell
and
brother-in-law, Gerald Dan McGaha.

Funeral services were held Thursday,
June 3, 2010 at 11 AM from the Harmony Grove Baptist church with Rev.
Jeff
Deaver, Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Scotty Jarrard officiating. Music was provided by Harmony Grove Praise
Team. Interment was in the church
cemetery. Pallbearers were, Steve
Rhoten, Matt Cook, Tim Stepp, Oscar Thomas, John Martel and Charlie
Byers. Honorary pallbearers included,
Anthony Olson,
Phil Nichols and Walt Reynolds.

Campbell, age 70, of Blairsville, GA, formerly
of Alliance, OH, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 in Marietta, GA. Kay was born in Alliance, OH to Mariam
Anderson Cordingly of Alliance, OH and the late Joseph Cordingly. .
Surviving in addition to her mother
are: husband, Richard Campbell of the home, son & daughter-in-law,

Mr.
William “Tommy” Gillespie, age 66, of
Owltown Rd., Blairsville, formerly of Buford, GA, passed away on
Sunday, May
30, 2010 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Gillespie was born on Jan. 9, 1844 in
Hall County, GA, the son of the late Sylvester Gillespie and the late
Estelle
Roberts Gillespie. He was a veteran of
the US Air Force. He was a member of the
Telephone Pioneers. Tommy enjoyed golf,
motorcycles and gardening. Tommy was of
the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Gillespie are his
loving wife of fourteen years, Linda Howington Sudderth Gillespie of
Blairsville, one daughter and son-in-law, Wendi and Craig Nielsen of
Buford,
GA, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Barbara Gillespie of
Gainesville, GA, Junior and Betty Gillespie of Murrayville, GA, Jessie
and Rita
Gillespie of Gainesville, GA, Dan and Kathy Gillespie of Pheonix (sic),
AZ,
sister-in-law, Frances Brown-Gillespie of Lula, GA, one grand daughter,
Riley
Nielsen, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also
survive.
A memorial service was held on Saturday,
June 5, 2010 at 4 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev.
Bobby Brown officiating. Special music was
presented by Ann
Shubert. Military Honors were presented
by the North GA Honor Guard. In lieu of
flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to
the
American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Gillespie.
The family met with friends at the funeral
home on Saturday evening from 3-4 p.m.

Mr.
Sydney Yale Cole, age 91, Smokey Creek
Cove, Blairsville passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at his home
following an
extended illness. Mr. Cole was born on
July 16, 1918 in Toronto, Canada, the son of the late Louis Cole and
the late
Ann Messenger Cole. Mr. Cole was a
member of Sertoma, the Florida Board of Realtors and the Longboat Key
Country
Club. He was an accomplished artist and
a wonderful golfer. He was a Squadron
Leader in the Royal Air Force for seven years and flew Spitfires. He owned a service typesetter printing
business in Toronto for over twenty-five years and was owner/broker of
Quest
Realty in Sarasota, FL for over thirty years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Cole and a
stepson,
Charles Williams. Mr. Cole was of the
Jewish faith.
Surviving Mr. Cole are his loving
wife, Toni Williams Cole of Blairsville, three daughters and two
sons-in-law,
Kathryne and Dr. David Manace of San Fransisco, (sic) CA, Nancy and
Robert
Krangle of Toronto, Angelique Moldauer of Sarasota, FL, one brother,
Albert
Cole of CA, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, many other
relatives and
friends also survive.
No services are planned at this
time. In lieu of flowers if you wish,

Rex R.
Nicholson, age 71, of Blairsville, GA,
passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Union General Hospital.
Rex was born in Hiawassee, GA to the
late Harvey and Eula Arrendale Nicholson.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Rex
was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Garrett Nicholson, sisters,
Faye
Nichols and Madge Stephens.
Survivors include: daughter and
son-in-law, Rhonda and Sonny Mahan of Blairsville, GA, daughter and

Born
August 1, 1914 Ethel Lenora Cagle Ryan
reunited on May 28 2010 with her five sisters: Margie, Annie Mae,
Evelyn, Mary
and Linda and her five brothers: Otis, Bernard Terry, Charles Leonard,
Fred and
James Lenoir. The last survivor of
eleven children, Ethel passed away at age 95.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Strawbridge and
Edith
Cagle and her husband Cecil William Raper.
Edith is survived by her son Jerry
Ryan and his wife Karol and her daughter Joyce Ryan and her husband Jim
Klar. She is also survived by many nieces
and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and their children who have
shared their
lives and so many special memories of love and joy with Ethel.
Born in Union County, GA in the
foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Ethel lived most of her adult
life in Marietta,
GA where she raised her two children, Jerry and Joyce.
She supported her family by teaching piano
lessons in the school system and in her home.
Her love of classical music began as a young teenager and
continued to
be among her greatest passions and joys all her life.
She was still playing Beethoven’s Pathetique
Sonata from memory just a couple of months before her passing. Ethel will be remembered by all who knew her,
family and friends, as a remarkable lady of courage, faith and love. She passed away at the Heartland Nursing home
in San Antonio, TX, where her daughter lives.
An informal family memorial service will be held sometime this
fall at
the Ivy Log Cemetery in North Georgia where her ashes will be interred
in the
Cagle family plot. If anyone would like
to make a donation in memory of Ethel it is requested that you contact
Jennifer

contributing to the “Women of Young Harris College Fund.”
Please mention that the donation is in memory
of Ethel Ryan. Ethel graduated from

elizabeth
ann “beth” burkart
Burkart,
Elizabeth Ann, (Beth) passed away
on May 21, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Boynton Beach, Florida after
a short
illness. She was 91 years old.
Beth and her late husband, Bob,
moved to Blairsville in 1969, from Florida along with their two
youngest
children, Jay and Laurie. Bob purchased
47 acres of undeveloped land on Skeenah Gap Road, which he proceeded to
develop
over the years. Initially Bob lived in a
tent, and then the family moved into a mobile home on site while he
built their
house. Bob put in a saw mill and
produced lumber for sale and for his own use.
He later worked as a building contractor and developer,
purchasing other
property in the area. Beth assisted him
with the business, in addition to her volunteer work at the senior
center where
she served meals and helped to raise funds by quilt making and other
crafts. A cedar log cabin, garden, trout
ponds and outbuildings were added over the years. The
property continues in use as a family
retreat.
Beth and
Bob were
founding members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic parish in
Blairsville.
They were
part of a
small group of pioneer families who helped erect the original building,
since
replaced. They both remained active in
the parish since its founding where Beth was known for her delicious
desserts
and Bob for his singing abilities. Bob
died in 1994 and is buried in the St. Clare Memory Garden on the church
grounds. Bob and Beth made many good
friends in North Georgia who will remember them fondly.
Beth is survived by five children:
David Burkart (Barbara) Miami, FL; Judy Martin (Ed) Blairsville, GA;
Leslie
Lillberg, Boynton Beach, FL; Father Gary Burkart, Messina, Italy;
Laurie
Markham, Boynton Beach, FL; seven grandchildren, four great
grandchildren –
another on the way - , six siblings, and numerous nieces, nephews and
relatives. She is predeceased by a son,
Jay Burkart.
A memorial Mass will be held at St.
Francis of Assisi Church on July 14, 2010 at 10 a.m. followed by
interment of
the ashes next to those of her husband.
A reception and lunch will follow in the Parish Hall.

Miss
Pamela Jean Garrett, age 44, of Garrett
St., Blairsville passed away on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at her home
following an
extended illness. Miss
Garrett was born on May 16, 1966 in Union
County, the daughter of James Wesley Garrett and Elizabeth Ann Crawford
Garrett. Pam was a native and lifelong
resident of Union County and a 1984 graduate of Union County High
School. She enjoyed fishing in her spare
time. She was a loving daughter, sister,
sister-in-law, aunt and was a friend to all who knew her.
She never met a stranger. Pam was a
member of the Day of Grace Baptist
Church.
Surviving Pam are her parents, James
and Elizabeth Garrett of Blairsville, eight brothers and sisters and
their
spouses, Sharlotte and Gary Adams of Cleveland, GA, Eddie and Jeanette
Garrett
of Blairsville, Ronnie and Jan Garrett of Blairsville, Stanley Garrett
of
Blairsville, Dennis and Loretta Garrett of Blairsville, Beverly Hawkins
of
Blairsville, Cindy Gillum of Gainesville, GA, Mark and Ancy Garrett of
Blairsville, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends
also
survive.
Funeral services were held on Saturday,
June 5, 2010 at 1 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev.
Jeremy
Henderson and Rev. Kevin Garrett officiating.
Special music was presented by David Chatham and family and Jodi
Garrett. The following gentlemen served
as pallbearers, Cody, Caleb, Corey and Alton Garrett, Phillip Sampson,
Coty
Carroll, Wesley Dwyer and Ian Reves.
Interment followed in the Union memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will met (sic) with friends at the
funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Mrs.
Donna Ann Harper, age 56, of Walnut Rd., Blairsville, passed away on
Tuesday,
June 1,2010 at her home. Mrs. Harper was
born on April 4,1954 in Boca Raton, FL., the daughter of the late Joe
Borozny
and the late Gertrude LaFlamme Borozny. Donna
retired from Bell South in 2003. At the
time of her death she was employed with Union General Hospital as an L.
P. N. She loved cooking, gardening and
doing magic
tricks. Mrs. Harper was a member of St.
Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
