mr. carol peterson vegas

 

Mrs. Carol Peterson Vegas, age 64, of Blairsville, Georgia, and Bay St. Louis, MS passed away Sunday, April 9, 2000 of leukemia, related complications in Gulfport, MS.

Born in Oakland, CA., on January 9, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Arvid A. Peterson and Elsie Willmott Peterson Wahl.

She is survived by her husband, Paul L. Vegas of Blairsville and Bay St. Louis, two daughters, Holly Vegas of Latham, NY and Virginia Vegas Reynolds of Sharon CT; two sons, Hunter Vegas of Kernersville, NC and Michael Vegas of Flowery Branch, GA; and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Vegas has lived in Bay St. Louis since April 1963, and she and her husband, Paul, made Blairsville their second home in August of 1994.  Her first priority was the love, care and support of each of her family members and the balance of her life was spent in various fields of volunteerism.  Her services included missionary work with primitive Indians from Guatemala and the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, beautification committees and highway landscapeing in Bay St. Louis, Hancock County, and southern Mississippi, designing rose windows, Tree of Life for the Harriet Center, building plans for her beloved Christ Episcopal Church, and the promoting of wild flowers in Georgia.  She was recognized with many awards during her lifetime, but all who knew and loved her would tell you that her greatest reward was in helping others.

Memorial services for Mrs. Vegas will be held on Sun-day, June 26, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, Murphy, NC.

mrs. frances m. flood

 

Mrs. Frances M. Flood, age 77, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2000, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.

Mrs. Flood was born on Wednesday, February 7, 1923, in Washington County, Maine, a daughter of the late William Batron and Edna Wayman Batron.  She had been living in Blairsville area since 1987, moving here from Ft. Myers, Florida.  Mrs. Flood was a church custodian.  She had been preceded in death by son, Lorry Flood, in 1964.

Survivors include her husband Mr. Carroll Flood, of Blairsville; daughter, Rosalyn King, of Blairsville; grandchildren, Dawna Marie Coy, Barry Joe King, and Jamie Lyn King, all of Blairsville; Donald Leslie Flood, Stephen Wayne Flood, both of Farmingdale, Maine; Sandi Jo Coy, of Turner, Maine; Steven John Coy, of Winslow; Lorry I. Flood, Connie Jo-Anne Griffin, both of Summerville, SC; and Susan Rae Coy, of St. Matthews, SC; eighteen great grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services were held Monday, June 12, 2000 at 11 a.m. from the House of Prayer Church, with Bill Honaker, and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.

mr. bill woody

 

Mr. Bill Woody, age 73, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, June 5, 2000, in Veteran’s Hospital, in Milledgeville, Georgia.

Mr. Woody was born in Union County, Georgia, on Wednesday, April 13, 1927, a son of the late Fred Nelson Woody, and Liller Helton Woody.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in WWII.  He lived in the Blairsville area for most of his life.

Survivors include his daughters: Lorena Elaine Dockery, and Brenda King, both of Blairsville; sons: William Henry Woody, Jr., an Dale Nelson Woody, both of Gainesville, Georgia; Barry Nelson Woody, of Cornelia, Georgia, Marvin Woody, of Young Harris, Georgia and Jefferson Nelson Woody, of Homer, Georgia; step-sons, Homer Arrowood, and Danny Arrowood, both of Blairsville; sisters: Lorene Morgan, of Blairsville; Dora Woody, and Wanda Trotter, both of Cornelia; and brother, James Woody, also of Cornelia; nineteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Chaplain Ken Mountz officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tommy King, Waymon Morgan, Jason Woody, Scott Jones, Christopher Dockery, and Jeff Plott.  Interment was in Owltown Church of God Cemetery.

mr. odes r. dixon

 

Mr. Odes R. Dixon, age 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Dixon was born in Fannin County, Georgia, on Friday, January 10, 1913, a son of the late John Dixon and Margaret Davis Dixon.  He was a lifelong resident of this area, and was a poultry farm worker.  He was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mae Seabolt Dixon, of Blairsville; three daughters: Olean Burnette, of Suches, Georgia; Faye Duckworth, of Blairsville, Georgia, and Jean Crump, of Griffin, Georgia; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, 2000, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Special music was presented by Harmony Grove Baptist Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tim Bohannon, Danny Stephens, Larry Dyer, Lee Chitwood, Steve Rhoten, and Dennis Gilbert.  Interment was in Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

waume carlos harkins

 

Wayne Carlos Harkins, 62, of Baxter, died on Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room.  The family has chosen cremation.

Mr. Harkins was born on October 29, 1927, in Blairsville, Georgia to the late Jewell and Edith Gillespie Harkins.  Mr. Harkins was a self-employed retired roofer.

His family includes his wife, Leona Harkins of Baxter; a son and daughter in law, Daniel and Betty Jo Harkins of Baxter; three daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Donald Brooks, Odessa and James Wilson, and Renee and Pat Walker, all of Baxter; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Eula Harkins of Blairsville; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lee Ruth and Junior Warren; Louise and Arnold Butts, and Clara Nell and Eldon Coker, all of Blairsville; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

mr. waring russell barbee

 

Mr. Waring Russell Barbee, age 96, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Union County, Georgia.

Mr. Barbee was born on Tuesday, February 2, 1904, a son of the late Clifford William Barbee and Ellen Spier Russell Barbee.  He was a native of Chatham County, Georgia, and grew up in Savannah.  He moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1924, where he resided until 10 years ago, when he moved to Blairsville.  Mr. Barbee was a distributor of cars for Kaiser/Fraiser, for North Florida, and all of Georgia.  He also was a dealer for Studebaker cars in Jacksonville.  As a young man, Mr. Barbee was a member of the Georgia Huzzars (The Georgia Calvary).  He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Wallace Barbee, in 1996.

Survivors include their children: daughters: Betty Jean Willis, and Beverly Ann Johnson, both of Blairsville, and Claudia Patricia Moody, of Hawthorne, Florida; sons: Waring Wallace Barbee, of Greenville, South Carolina, Clifford William Barbee of Jacksonville, Florida, and Dr. Richard Russell Barbee, of Augusta, Georgia; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. from St. Claire’s Episcopal Church, with Rev. Carter Maddox officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Waring Wallace Barbee, Jr., Michael Barbee, Robert Barbee, Cliff Willis, Stephen Willis, and Russell Willis.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.
