            Mr. Kenneth Marion Simonds, age 55, of Evans Circle, Blairsville, formerly of Cleveland, GA passed away on Sunday June 9, 2013 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness. Mr. Simonds was born on April 29, 1958 in Gainesville, GA, the son of the late Andrew Jackson Simonds and the late Thelma Bruce Simonds. Kenneth was a good Christian man who loved his Lord. He enjoyed getting out and riding around, antique automobiles and drag racing. Kenneth was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. Mr. Simonds was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mr. Simonds are his loving wife of thirty-eight years, Brenda Gail Hullender Simonds of Blairsville, one daughter and son-in-law, Mindy and Grant Scarcey of Relondo Beach, CA, one son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Angie Simonds of Conway, AR, one brother and sister-in-law, A.J. and Shirley Simonds of Toccoa, GA, three sisters and one brother-in-law, Velma Williams of South Carolina, Cathy and James Vanmeter of Dawsonville, GA, Ruby Conner of Cleveland, GA, one grandson, Hayden Lincoln Jett Simonds, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to help defray expenses in Kenneth’s memory.

            Pastor Terrell Jones, age 69, of Blairsville passed away Sunday morning, June 16, 2013 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Terrell was born June 12, 1944 in Union County to the late Jewell and Cora Murphy Jones. Rev. Jones was a lifelong resident of Union County. He was the Pastor of the Jones Creek Church of God for many years.  Terrell worked at the Tennessee Chemical Company in Copperhill, TN until his retirement.

            Terrell is survived by his wife of 48˝ years, Evelyn Kelley Jones, daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Donald Weaver of Blairsville, daughter, Jennifer Gentry and daughter, Kimberly Jones; and grandchildren Jaron Weaver, Megan Weaver, Samantha Gentry, Jenna Gentry and Justin Cantrell.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013 with Rev. Randolph Jones and Rev. Bill Brown officiating. A eulogy was given by Mrs. Opal Cook. Pastor Jones laid in state at the church Tuesday from 1 until 2 p.m. Music was provided by Casey Jones. The family received friends Monday, June 17th from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

            The following gentlemen were requested to serve as pallbearers: Roger Kelley, Tracy Dockery, Rusty Fortenberry, Donald Weaver, Ranny Jones and Gary Jones. Honorary pallbearers: Jaron Weaver, Justin Cantrell and Andy Stephens.

Mr. Arthur Willis Carter, age 64, of Taylor Henson Road, Murphy formerly of Blairsville, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday June 16, 2013 following a battle with cancer. Mr. Carter was born on July 26, 1948 in McAdenville, NC, the son of the late George Arthur Carter and the late Flossie Gertrude Griggs Carter. Arthur had the best show exhibit in the Georgia Bridal Show in Atlanta in 2001. Before he retired he was a Master Carpenter. He had built the Christmas Village in Copperhill. He enjoyed listening to music and spending time with Sue and his family. The last few years he and Sue sold produce. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ted L. Carter. Arthur was a member of the Cartersville Church of God.

Surviving Mr. Carter are his companion in life, Sue Epperson of Murphy, one son Arthur “Scott” Willis Carter Jr. of Lawrenceville, GA, one brother and sister in law, Toney and Christina Carter of McAenville, NC, stepchildren, Jimmy and Aretha Metzdorf of Murphy, Shawn and Brandi Metzdorf of Murphy, Richard and Angie Metzdorf of Carrollton, OH, Nathaniel and Amanda Hooper of Blairsville, Xylana (John Greenwich) of Mineral Bluff, GA, Crystal Auberry of Ellijay, GA, sixteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to help to defray expenses in Arthur’s memory.

                Mr. John Franklin Brown, age 74, of Kuituestia Creek Rd., Blairsville passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 11, 1939 in Murphy, NC to the late Ed and Voleta (Nix) Brown. Mr. Brown had been in the construction business for years doing dozer work. He was a dedicated Christian who loved his Lord, his Church and Gospel Singing, and his friends. Mr. Brown loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Brown was was (sic) preceded in death by brothers, James and Nando Brown. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

            Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Doris Mason Brown of Blairsville, sons, Steven E. and Cassie Brown of Blairsville, Cecil Brown of Blairsville, daughter, Linda and Randy McClure of Blairsville, grandchildren, Carrie, Kristin, Jamie, Jonathan, Jennifer, Mandy and Kyle, great grandchildren, Baylee, Lance, Sydney, Elijah and Bennett.

            Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2013 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. John Newton and Rev. Gary Rogers officiating. Music was by Lance King and Benny Berry. Pallbearers were Doug Brown, Jonathan, Brown, Kyle McClure, Larry Sellers, Mack Mason, Dewayne Lea, Gavin King and Mark Herrell. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. If you wish in lieu of flowers you may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society. The family received friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

                Mr. Ray Lawrence Young, age 66, of Lilly Rose Dr., Blairsville passed away Monday, June 10, 2013 in Union General Hospital. He was born December 17, 1946 in Young Harris, GA to the late Lawrence and Della Marie (Shook) Young. Ray had worked as a truck driver for Youngblood Concrete Company. He loved racing, wrestling and gardening. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. Ray was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Young, sisters, Dorothy, Hildred, Mildred and Helen Young. He was of the Baptist Faith.

            Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Opal Collins Young of Blairsville, children, William and Tara Young of Blairsville, Rita and Larry Brown of Blairsville and Dustin and Greta Young of Blairsville, sister, Cathy Wimpey and Larry Hamilton of Clarkesville, brothers, Dennis and Joy Young of Young Harris, Dwight and Debbie Young of Young Harris, Tony and Charlotte Young of Young Harris, Gary Young of Young Harris, sixteen grandchildren, Kayce, Justin, Jerick, Kellie, Ashley, Emily, Alexis, Abby, Aspen, Austin, Josh, Kristen, Justin, Dustin, Tyler and Dylan, one great grandchild, Kinley.

            Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Seay, Rev. Wade Plott, Rev. Jimmy Rogers, Rev. Jeff Young and Sam Nichols officiating. Music was by Charlotte Young and Merle Fortenberry. Pallbearers were Justin Young, Jerick Young, Frank Collins, Jason Young, W.H. Hood and Austin Nation. Interment followed in Trackrock Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

                Mr. French Trogdon, age 92, of Appletree Lane, Blairsville passed away Monday, June 3, 2013 at his home following an extended illness. He was born March 18, 1921 in Gibsonville, NC to the late John Harlen and Zella (Steele) Trogdon. Mr. Trogdon move here in 1982. He was a WWII Army Air Force Veteran, and had worked as a supervisor with the I.R.S. Mr. Trogdon was an excellent Violinist and played at church for years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Polly Claytor in 1970 and a grandson, Samuel Hicks in 2008. Mr. Trogdon was a member of Blairsville Church of the Nazarene.

            Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Effie Trodgon, of the home, children, Georgette and Ron Howerton of Suwanee, GA, Charlotte and Don Carrabotta of Rockwood, PA, George and Vicki Trogdon of Blairsville, GA and Isabelle Trogdon of Suwanee, GA, sister, Peggy Brammer of Murphy, NC, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

            Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Fuller and Rev. Ivan Rexroth officiating. Interment followed at 3 p.m. in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, GA. The family received friends at the funeral home Thursday morning from 9 until 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers make memorials to Blairsville Church of the Nazarene for Missions.

            Ellen Louise Anderson, age 71, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday morning, June 13, 2013 at her home.

            Mrs. Anderson was born on January 28, 1942 in Quincy, MA to the late Henry & Mary Dolan Baldwin. She served the city of Pembroke, MA with dedication as a Municipal Administrative Assistant until her retirement. Ellen had a strong Christian faith and was an active member of Coosa United Methodist Church. There she enjoyed fellowship with members of her church family working with crafts as a Coosa Crafter. She was a member of the Iota Iota Kappa Sorority in Blairsville and also the Misty Mountain Quilt Guild. Gifted with a pleasant nature and a passion to serve, Ellen never turned down an opportunity to help others. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Kathleen McLeer.

            She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her family: loving husband of 34 years, Harold Anderson; son, George Melanson; daughters, Maureen Channell, Donna Diaz and Gail Melanson; step-children, Deborah Colanino, Cheryl Malone and Phillip Anderson; and brother, James Baldwin. 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren also share in her legacy.

            A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 from Coosa United Methodist Church with Rev. Roy Watkins officiating.

            Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces memorial services for Mr. Al Maund, age 69, of Blairsville, who passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013, at his home.

            Mr. Maund was born in Newark, NJ, on January 24, 1944, a son of the late Albert Maund and the late Grace Crawford. He had lived in Blairsville since 2010, moving here from Palmetto, FL. Al was an avid fisherman and loved being on the water; he enjoyed playing cards, too. Al and his wife Mary were partners and drove a truck together. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Phil Maund.

            Al leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving family members: wife, Mary Maund, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Joanie Maund, of Parrish, FL; son, Stephen Maund, of Long Beach, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Mary Maund, of Riverview, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Alison and Keith Dean, of Gilbert, AZ; daughter, Tracey Maund, and son, Al Maund; brother, David Maund, of Erie, PA; cousins, Ruth Maund and Barbara Robles, both of Ranger, NC; seven grandchildren: Cori, Dani, Vanessa, Katie, Joel, Eli, and Vicki. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Memorial services for Mr. Maund have been scheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville.

donald willis

 

            Mr. Donald Willis, age 85, of Havenwood Rd., Blairsville passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 at Union General Hospital. He was born March 8, 1928 in Kansas City, MO. Mr. Willis moved to this area in 1999 from Ocala, FL. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Willis was an avid golfer, and was a great husband, father and grandfather. He was retired from Western Electric. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Willis in 2009, son, Donald Willis, Jr. in 1980, mother, Mabel (Kramer) O’Brien in 2005 and half brother, Jack O’Brien in 1994. Mr. Willis was of the Eckankar Faith.

            Survivors include sons, Gary Willis of Paola, KS and Kirk Willis of Blairsville, GA, five grandchildren also survive.

raymond l. "lee" McClure

 

            Raymond L. "Lee" McClure, age 74, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

            Mr. McClure was born in Young Harris, GA, on August 10, 1938, a son of R.L. and Toledo Giddens McClure. Lee owned and operated United Van Lines in Massachusetts for many years before returning to live in Blairsville. Mr. McClure was an animal lover and supporter of animal rights. He had two beloved Yorkies, Mollie & Oliver. Another of his loves was antiquing. Lee canvassed the North Georgia area looking for and procuring treasures. Lee was a Christian and was passionate about spreading the word of Jesus Christ.

            He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his family: son, Marc McClure; grandsons, Clay and Devin McClure; sisters, Edna Bearden and Fran Miller; wife, Kay McClure, 4 step-children and many step-grandchildren. Numerous other relatives also survive in the Dalton, GA area.

            The family is planning private memorial services to be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to Humane Society's Mountain Shelter, P.O. Box 1252, Blairsville, GA 30514.
