            The Banister Funeral Home, Inc. of Young Harris, GA announces the death and Funeral (sic) services for Mrs. Donna Faye Stroud, age 30, of Young Harris, GA passed away Friday, June 14, 1996.

            Mrs. Stroud was born in Union County the daughter of Gerald and Opal Lovell McGaha and had lived most of hr life in Towns County. 

            Surviving are her husband, John Neil Stroud of Young Harris, Parents (sic) Mr. and Mrs. Gerald McGaha of Young Harris; daughter and son Shawnda Stroud and Trevor Stroud of the home; step-daughter and stepson, Penny and John Stroud of Hayesville, NC; brothers Gerald D. McGaha, Jr and Aaron Rowland of Hayesville, NC and one nephew.

            Funeral services were held Sunday, June 16, 1996 at 2 p.m. from the Old Brasstown Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers and the Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.  Pallbearers were Ricky Plott, Ray Plott, Kevin Warren, Ralph Lovell, Joe Young and Norman McConnell.  Banister Funeral home of Young Harris in charge of arrangements.

mrs. nellie p. mason

 

            Mrs. Nellie P. Mason, 88, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 1996 in Lilburn Geriatric Center is (sic) Lilburn, GA.

Mrs. Mason was born in Fannin County, Georgia, on August 30, 1907, a daughter of the late Joseph Elijah Patterson and Nancy Ammons Patterson.  She was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in this area.  Mrs. mason was a member of Faith Baptist Church.  Preceding her in death was her husband, Roy e. mason, in 1968; a daughter, Jana Ruth Plott, in 1994; and granddaughter, Nancy Maness, in 1994. 

            Surviving are five children, Charlsea Carney, of Dahlonega, GA; Bernadine Saul, of Clarkesville, TN; Dwight Mason, of Milledgeville, GA; Dwayne Mason, of Lawrenceville, GA; and Blake Mason, of Monroe, GA; two sisters, Grace Stephens, of Maryville, TN; and Kate Murphy, of Blairsville, GA; nineteen grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held Friday, June 14, 1996 from Faith Baptist Church with Pastor James Brock officiating.  Special music was presented by Sammy Nichols, James Brock, and David Hobby.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Joey Murphy, Wendall Murphy, Gerald Patterson, Lannie Plott, Eddie Mason, and Chuck Mason.  Serving as Honorary (sic) escort to the family were Quinton Holbrooks, and Ted Diaz.  Interment was in Pleasant Grove Baptist church Cemetery.

mr. o. d. hilton, jr.

 

            Mr. O. D. Hilton, Jr., 45, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, June 13, 1996 in Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia.

            Mr. Hilton was a native of Fannin County, Georgia, and was born on July 23, 1950.  he was a lifelong resident of this area and was a carpenter.  Mr. Hilton was a member of Star Creek Baptist Church.

            Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Beaver Hilton, of Blairsville; a daughter, Vanessa Hilton and step daughter, Joni Beaver, both of Blairsville; parents, Ollie D. and Edna mae (sic) Hilton, of Morganton; brothers, Morris Lynn Hilton of Morganton; Carl James Hilton, of Blairsville, GA; and Ronald L. Hilton, of Culleoka, TN; sister, Regina Hilton of Morganton.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15, 1996 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Fred Thomas officiating.  Special music was presented by Doug Carlton and Billy Harkins.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Guy Raper, Jim Raper, Kenneth Ivester, Max Lovingood, Steve Berry, and Buell Thomason.  Serving as Honorary (sic) escort to the family was Herbert Ivester.  Interment was in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. j. c. weaver

 

            Mr. J. C. Weaver, 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday afternoon, June 9, 1996 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mr.  Weaver was born February 20, 1920 in Union County, Georgia, a son of the late Ora Weaver and Dealy Sullivan Weaver.  He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and served during World War II.  Mr. Weaver was a lifelong resident of Union County.  Preceding him in death was a son, Charles Weaver, and a grandson, Benny Weaver. 

            Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Deyton Weaver of the home; son, Bill Weaver, of Blairsville; Daughter (sic) Mary Jo Loggins, of Murrayville; Daughter (sic) and son in law, Gearldine (sic) Andrews and Joe Andrews, of Lilburn; son, William Frank “Bud” Weaver, of Blairsville; daughter and son in law, Ann and Jimmy Spiva, of Blairsville; daughter Edith and Frank Sellers, of Cleveland; daughter and son in law, Carolyn and J.L. Tanner of Blairsville; and son and daughter in law, John Franklin “Moe” and Gail Weaver, of Blairsville; two nieces, Martha Crumley and Elva Lee Choate both of Fort Worth, Texas; twenty Grandchildren (sic) and fifteen great grandchildren also survive.

            Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 11, 1996 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Jerry Young, Rev. Guy Bradley, and Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.  Mrs. Odena Gibson presented the special music.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: J.L. Tanner, Jimmy Spivia, Robert Carpenter, Avery Hughes, Don Murphy, and Jack Kelley.  Grandsons served as honorary escort to the family.  Interment was in Union memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

mrs. beulah mae pettett

 

            Mr. (sic) Beulah Mae Pettett, 78, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 1996 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Pettett was born in Union County, Georgia, on August 2, 1916, a daughter of the late Elisha Patterson and Julia Brackett Patterson.  She was a homemaker and was the widow of the late Rev. Claude Pettett, who passed away in 1981.  Mrs. Pettett had lived most of her life in this area, and was a member of Central Baptist Church of Marietta. 

            Surviving are daughters, Claudette Sparks of Blairsville, and Carolyn Shaw, of Loganville, GA; son, David Pettett, of Marietta, GA; sister, Hazel McClure of Ohio; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren also survive.

            Funeral services were held Friday, June 14, 1996 at 4 p.m. from Confidence Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Susie Phillips, Louise Delong, and Nelson Lecroy.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tony Brown, Richie Shaw, Kirk Johnson, Darren Groves, Scott Grey, and Larry Patterson.    Interment was in Confidence Methodist Church Cemetery.

mr. charlie tate

 

            Mr. Charlie Tate, 77, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, June 10, 1996 in Blairsville.

Mr. Tate was a former football coach at the University of Miami and assistant coach at Georgia Tech.  He and his wife, Annie Lee, had been living in the North Georgia Mountains since 1983, when Tate retired after selling a business in Sebring.  Mr. Tate was born in Tracy City, Tennessee, on February 20, 1919, and moved to Florida at age 5.  He became a standout in football, baseball and basketball at Jacksonville’s Julia Landon High School in the 1930’s. 

            Surviving are his wife, Annie Lee Tate of Blairsville; daughters, Connie Perry of Nashville, GA, Kathy Russell, of Chapel Hill, NC; and Susie Morris, of Valrico, FL; sons, Charles Tate, Jr., and Richard Tate, of Bartow, FL, and Robert Tate of Brandon, FL; sisters, Kathleen Barllett of Daytona Beach, FL, Ophelia Ogier and Joyce Brannam, both of Jacksonville; and Lolly Nolan of Starke, FL; brothers, Hayes Tate and Buddy Tate, both of Jacksonville.  Sixteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15, 1996 from the Stephenson Nelson Chapel with Rev.             Mrs. Ethel T. Hullender, 85, of Ringgold, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville, passed away Thursday, June 13, 1996 in Ft. Oglethorpe Nursing Home in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA.

Mrs. Hullender was Born (sic) June 11, 1911 in Towns County, Georgia.  A daughter of the late Thomas Townsend and Mary Hullender Townsend.  She lived in Young Harris for many years before moving to Ringgold in 1939.  Mrs. Hullender was a homemaker and a member of Old Union Baptist Church in Young Harris.  She was the widow of the late w. J. Hullender, who passed away in 1970.. 

            Surviving are step son, Perry Hullender, of Apison, TN; sister, Beulah Puett, of Young Harris, GA; a grandson, Jeffrey Hullender, of Ringgold; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Brian Hullender, of Ringgold; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15, 1996 at 11 a.m. from Old Union Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by Ulysses and Dorothy Sampson.  Interment was in Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. thomas lee bowers

 

            Mr. Thomas Lee Bowers, 89, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday evening, June 10, 1996 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mr.  Bowers was born in White County, Georgia, On (sic) October 11, 1906, a son of the late Tom David Bowers, and Kiturah Waldroup Bowers.  He was a member of the Blairsville Church of God.  Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Bowers. 

            Surviving are his wife, Laura Bowers, of the Home (sic); daughters, Ruth Sauls, of Carrollton, GA; Dorothy Collinson, of Lexington, NC; daughter, Kathryn Spry, of Kannapolis, NC; son, George Bowers, of Blairsville, GA; and son, Frank Bowers, of Kannapolis, NC; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive.

            Funeral services were held Thursday, June 13, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Dupree and Rev. Bill Gowder officiating.  Special music was presented by Michelle Collins.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:

Daniel Willimon, Carroll Weaver, Tom Gregory, Steven Tanner, James Lemley and Jason Hall.  Interment was in Duncan Cemetery.
