phyllis jean pander

 

Mrs. Phyllis Jean pander, age 60, of Nottley Trace, Blairsville, formerly of Ellwood, City, PA, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2007 after fighting a long hard battle.  She received her reward from her Lord.  Mrs. Pander was born on November 8, 1946 in Ellwood City, PA, the daughter of the late Charles Walter Simmons and the late Esther Schramm.  She was a Registered Nurse for over thirty years and was currently employed at Union General and Fannin Regional Hospitals.  She was a very loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed.  Mrs. Pander was a member of the Mountain Presbyterian Church.

Surviving Mrs. Pander are her loving husband of forty years, Thomas Pander, Sr. of Blairsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, and Susie Pander of Englewood, FL, Tom and Beaverly Pander of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Mike Presnar of Ellwood City, PA; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Margaret Cron of Unionville, PA, Nancy and Dave Dishler of Rochester, PA; two brothers Robert Simmons of Levitown, PA, Richard Simmons of Ellwood City, PA; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain Presbyterian Church with the Rev. K. Travis Adams officiating.  Funeral services will also be held on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Marshall Funeral Home in Ellwood City, PA, with visitation being held on Wednesday evening from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Marshall Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in the Wurtemburg Cemetery.

lois chaney leftwich

 

Mrs. Los Chaney Leftwich, age 68, of Sharp Top Circle formerly of Newnan, GA, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Leftwich was born on December 8, 1938 in Roanoke, VA, the daughter of the late Lacy Edmond Chaney and the late Easter May Likins Chaney.  She was a devoted wife and mother.  Mrs. Leftwich was a member of Peachtree City United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Leftwich are her loving husband of forty-seven years, Gerald Leftwich of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Greg Leftwich of Sharpsburg, VA, Gary and Rebecca Leftwich of Carrollton, GA; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Edmond and Ann Chaney of S. Boston, VA, Herman and Margie Chaney of Roanoke, VA, Harold Chaney of Bedford, VA; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lettie Perez of Edenburg, VA, Doris and Homer Simmons of Moneta, VA, Sarah and Church Hill of Vinton, VA; three grandchildren, Emory, Savannah and Asher; many other relatives and friends also survive.

No services are planned at this time.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to a local Hospice of your choice in Mrs. Leftwich’s memory. were held on officiating.

ben stein

 

Mr. Benn Stein, age 90, of Kiutuestia Creek Rd., Blairsville passed away on Friday, June 15, 2007 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Stein was born on April 25, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Max Stein and the late Lena Raff Stein.  He retired from A-1 Firefighting Equipment in Phoenix, AZ after several years of service.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Guren Stein and also by a sister, Florence Holtz.  Mr. Stein was of the Jewish faith.

Surviving Mr. Stein are one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Earl Conlon of Blairsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Sol and Rosanna Stein of CA; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Blairsville Mountain Shelter in Mr. Stein’s memory.

robert “bob” Dean ellis

 

Mr. Robert (better known as Bob) Dean Ellis, age 71, of Souther Farm Rd., Blairsville and also of Sunny Drive, Donalsville, GA passed away on Monday, June 11, 2007 at his home in Blairsville following an extended illness.  Mr. Ellis was born on June 12, 1935 in Emeigh, PA, the son of the late Clarence Ellis, Sr. and the late Marion Gentles Ellis.  He was retired from the U.S. Navy, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  He received over eighteen Medals and Awards while in the Military.  He loved his God and his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ellis and two brothers, jack and Charlie Ellis.  Mr. Ellis was a member of Reynolds Chapel Methodist Church in Donalsville, GA.

Surviving Mr. Ellis are his loving wife of fourteen years, Betty Jean Johnson Ellis of Blairsville and Donalsville; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Bob Ellis, Jr. of Henderson NV, Michael Ellis of Austin, TX, David and Ann Ellis of Arlington, TX; three step-sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Nancy Woods of Fayetteville, GA, Tommy and Brenda Woods of Thomasville, GA, Gary and Heather Woods of Decula, GA; one sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Dan Schmidt of Youngstown, OH; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Susie Ellis of Crourgaville, TX; six grandchildren, Kati, Cory, Kenny, Delaney, Sydney and Micaela; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Services for Mr. Ellis were held on Friday, June 15, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Reynolds Chapel Methodist Church in Donalsville, GA with the Rev. Ed Ellis officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Lung Association in Mr. Ellis’s memory.  Interment followed in the church cemetery with Military Honors.

raymond “brance” murphy

 

Mr. Raymond (Better known as Brance) Murphy, age 73, of Murphy Rd., Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mr. Murphy was born on October 15, 1933 in Cherokee, NC, the son of the late Luther Murphy and the late Hattie Roberts Murphy.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with a rank as Master Sgt.  He was a member of Young Cane Lodge #597 F&AM.  Brance loved Blue Grass music and enjoyed playing the guitar.  His favorite hobbies were fishing and going out to eat.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita Sharon Murphy in 1958.  Mr. Murphy was a member of Jones Creek Church of God.

Surviving Mr. Murphy are his loving wife, Mary Queen Murphy of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Susan Murphy of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and David Hughes of Blairsville; two step-sons, William and Jerry Cook of Blairsville; two step-daughters, Sandra Seabolt and Sheila Beavers both of Blairsville; brother and sister-in-law, Willie and Doris Murphy of Blairsville; sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Elbert Towe of Smyrna, GA; four grandchildren, Christy Jones, Tommy Murphy Jr., Tonya Woodard, and Koby Hughes; one great-grandchild, Kaelyn Jones; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 15, 2007 at 4 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Terrell Jones, Rev. Jerry Helton and Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Special music was presented by Hwy 76 and Angie Burrell.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, KOBY Hughes, Christopher Woodard, Darren Jones, Shane Murphy, Tommy Murphy, Jr. and Gary Beavers.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Charles and Bud Murphy, Gollie Easter, Ben Burrell and Jerry Cook.  Interment followed in the Queen Cemetery with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting Military Honors and the Young Cane Lodge #597 Conducting Masonic Rites.

william c. “bill” odom

 

Mr. William C. “Bill” Odom, age 66 of Tignall, GA, formerly of Union County, GA, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007 at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, GA.  Mr. Odom was born Monday, November 4, 1940 in Union County, GA to the late Clyde Odom and the late Ruth Warren Odom.  He was a member of Fishing Creek Baptist Church in Tignall.  Mr. Odom was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ruth Odom; sisters, Annie Dean, Angie Lee Galloway and Wayne Odom; and half-brother, Bartow Stewart.

Survivors include: son, Wayne Odom of Blairsville; daughter, Cerelda DeHeus of Arlington, TX; son, Christopher Odom of Blairsville; sisters, Muriel Cotton of Bakersfield, CA; Johnnie Frey of Cartersville, GA; Jessie Echols of Kennesaw, GA; Jean Esposito of Port St. Lucie, FL; and Irene Reece of Kennesaw; grandchildren, Amy Odom of Athens, GA; Melissa Clifton of Athens; Kimberly DeHeus of Arlington, TX; Jessica Odom of Blairsville; Chelsea Odom of Blairsville; and great-grandchild, Kaydee Addison McClure of Blairsville.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 14, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Cates officiating.  Music was provided by Mrs. Essie Daniel.  Interment followed in Confidence United Methodist Church cemetery in Blairsville.  Serving as pallbearers were Mr. Odom’s nephews.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 13.

robert fisher shirer

 

Mr. Robert Fisher Shirer, age 73, of M & M Place, Blairsville formerly of Atlanta, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2007 in the Kennestone Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Shirer was born on February 3, 1934 in Allison, IA, the son of the late Clarence Albert Shirer and the late Alberta Johnson Shirer.  He was a veteran of the U.S. navy of the Korean War.  He was a member of the Valley Nebraska Masonic Lodge F&AM, a Shriner, and a member of the Sunny Peaches Camping Club.  Robert was a loving husband and father.  He enjoyed hiking and camping.  Mr. Shirer was a member of Providence Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Shirer are his loving wife of fifty-one years, Mary Jo Harris Shirer of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Leigh Shire of Pensacola, FL; three daughters and one son-in-law, Melonie Jackson of Philadelphia, PA, Sheila and Jackie Johnson of Savannah, GA, Charlotte Shirer of Jacksonville, FL, Amy Shirer of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren, Jason and Justin Jackson, Jack and Jennifer Johnson, Rachel, Ross and Robyn Shirer; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Church Gillespie officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Jason and Justin Jackson, jack and Jackie Johnson, Ross Shirer and Chris Kenny.  Interment followed in the Providence Methodist Church Cemetery.  Flowers are accepted or in lieu of, donations may be made to the Providence Methodist Church building fund in Mr. Shirer’s memory.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m.
