Robert
D. Smith Sr. was born August 24, 1929.
He was the son of Rev. and Mrs. W.L. Smith.
As a child he traveled extensively with his
parents and his brother, Lynn.
He proudly
served in the U.S. Army in the early 1950’s.
On March 5, 1954 he married Eleanor Roberson.
He carried his new wife to Centerville,
Arkansas, where he attended Arkansas Tech.
Later, they returned to Atlanta, and he began his career at the
Atlanta
Fire Department.
His
kindness and compassion for others led him to reach out to the
desolate,
providing shelter and care, giving them comfort in knowing that someone
cares. His belief in others intensified
after he suffered a crippling injury while on duty with the Atlanta
Fire
Department. He retired from his beloved
department, and became an ordained Missionary with the Church of God. He made the decision that he would pack his
family into a pickup truck and a twenty-four foot trailer and drive to
LaCeiba,
Honduras. There he continued his passion
for helping others just as he had as an Atlanta Fireman.
After
returning from Honduras, he felt the Lord led him to Blairsville in
1970. He bought a home, opened a business,
and was
instrumental in starting the Blairsville Church of God.
His care touched many people during his life,
more than he ever told us and more than we will ever know.
On August
24, 1998, he began the hardest battle of his life.
He was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He
fought with courage, dignity, and
determination. His will to live was
evident with each passing day. He did
not complain, fell pity for himself, or question God’s will. On June 20, 2009 the battle was over and now
he wears a crown.
Surviving Robert
are his loving wife of fifty-five years, Eleanor Smith of Blairsville,
his
children, Talu and Lee Epps, Susan and Troy Beaver, Robert Jr. and
Kumiko
Smith, Dietrich and Robby Brown, one brother, Lynn Smith, his
grandchildren,
Grant and Todd Epps, Taylor and Clay Tate and Lee Beaver, Robert III
and Ed
Smith, Charlie DeRuiter (husband Alex), Caleb Dyer (wife Lisa),
Chandler Dyer
and Canaan Dyer, his great grandson, Alexander DeRuiter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and
eldest grandson, Eddie Dyer Jr.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the
Blairsville
Church of God with the Rev. John Davis, Rev. James Hughes and Chaplain
Thomas
Houston officiating. Special music was
presented by the Cornett family, Estelle Smith, Jimmy Hall, Ed and Bob
Smith. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers, Joel Bosch, Harold Satterfield, don Walls, Eddie Dyer, Joe
Goodman
and Larry Stover. Serving as honorary
pallbearers were grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Interment followed in Union
Memory Gardens Cemetery with the
North Ga. Honor Guard conducting military honors and the Atlanta Fire
Department doing Last Call. The family
met with friends at the funeral home on Sunday and Monday evenings.
