Mr. John
H. Thomas, age 77, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, June 8,
1998 in
Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mr. Thomas
was born in Towns County, Georgia, on Wednesday, November 17, 1920, a son of the late Ed Thomas and Fannie Cl0er
Thomas. He was a US Navy Veteran of
World War II, and
had served in the 93rd Seabees. Mr.
Thomas was a lifelong resident of this area and was a member of Zebulon
Baptist
Church, a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge, #114, F&AM; and a
member of
the DAV, The American Legion, and the VFW.
He owned and operated City Barber Shop in Blairsville until his
retirement. Mr. Thomas was also a
retired Baptist minister.
Surviving
are his wife of 60 years, Lena Mae Thomas, of the home; daughter and
son in
law, Barbara and Randall Edwards of Alpharetta, GA; son and daughter in
law,
James A. and Sharon Thomas of Lawrenceville, GA; daughter and son in
law
Byrdene and Bill Wilson of Douglasville;
son and daughter in law, Robert and Dorothy Thomas, of Dawsonville;
daughter
and son in law, Rebecca and Kenneth Dyer, of Blairsville; and daughter,
Robin
Thomas, of Alpharetta; 6 sisters: Vina Cook, Thelma Coker, Paulina
Collins,
Irene Collins, Flora Collins, and Mae Penland, all of Blairsville;
brother in
law, Medison Penland, of Blairsville; brother, Nathan Thomas, of
Alabama; 5
grandchildren: Matthew Dyer, of Blairsville; Meredith Thomas, of
Lilburn;
Airman 2nd Class Thomas Scoot Edwards, of Okinawa, Japan; Allison
Thomas, of
Dawsonville; James Andrew Thomas II, of Lilburn; many nieces and
nephews also
survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, June 10, 1998 at 2 p.m. from Zebulon
Baptist
Church with Reverend Hughes Chatham, and Reverend Guy Gradley
officiating. Special music was presented
by R. Terry
Hooper. The following gentlemen served
as pallbearers: Andrew Thomas, Kenneth
Dyer, E.L. Cook, Matthew Dyer, Leon Davenport, and Rick Volker. Interment was in Union Memory Gardens
Cemetery, with military honors by North Georgia Honor Guard.

Mr. Guy
Water Spiva, age 75, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, June
16,
1998, in Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
Mr. Spiva
was born in Union County, GA on February 28, 1923,
a son of the late Guy Cook Spiva and Bessie Duckworth Spiva. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Spiva was a member of the North Georgia
Honor Guard, The American Legion, The VFW, The AMVETS, Forest Park
Masonic
Lodge #399, and the Grand Chapter of GA R.A.M., Forest Park, #75. Mr. Spiva was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving
are his wife, Virginia Keen Spiva, of the home; daughters: Jennifer
Rainwater
of Roswell; Kristie Payne of Jasper; Anita “Cricket” Spiva of
Blairsville; and
Angie Thomas of Ellijay; sons: Keith Spiva of Woodstock, and warren
Long of
Marietta; sister: Dorothy Spiva of Savannah; brothers: Ulric and Leon
Spiva of
Blairsville; John Spiva of Canton; Paul Spiva of Savannah, and Larry
Spiva of
Jasper; four granddaughters and seven grandsons also survive.
Funeral
services were held Friday, June 19, 1998, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home of Blairsville with rev. Willis Garrett and Rev. James
Thomas officiating. Special music was
presented by Ken and Elaine
Young. Nephews served as pallbearers:
Gene Spiva, Dickey Carisle, Robert Spiva, Randy Spiva, David Phillips,
and
Church Martin. Interment was in Shady
Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, with military honors presented by
North
Georgia Honor Guard.

Mrs.
Sara Louise James, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Tuesday, June
16, 1998 at her home.
Mrs.
James was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, on July 24,
1921, a daughter of the late William A. Whitnum and Isabelle Hoffman
Whitnum. Mrs. James had lived in
Blairsville for the past five years, coming here from Lake Worth,
Florida. She was a retired secretary for
an auto parts
company.
Surviving
are her husband, Norman James; sons, Robert Leslie James of Annapolis,
Maryland
and William Frederick James of Tallahassee, Florida; daughter, Susan
Carole
Lyle of West Palm Beach, Florida; sisters, Donna Ryerse of Port Dover,
Ontario
and Doris Mersbach of Saugatuck, Michigan; five grandchildren: Karl
James,
Kimberley Blanton, James Lyle, Matthew James, and Ashley James. One great-grandson, Garrett Blanton, also
survives.
The family
gathered with friends on Friday, June 19, 1998 from 6-9 p.m. at Cochran
Funeral
Home of Blairsville.
