violet blanche postell pickelsimer

 

            Mrs. Violet Blanche Postell Pickelsimer, age 86, of Blairsville formerly of Blue Ridge, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008 in Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Pickelsimer was born on February 20, 1922 in Lynch, KY, the daughter of the late William Arthur Postell and the late Mary Odessie Panter Postell.  She owned and operated the Shady lane Personal Care Home in Marietta in from 1984-1997.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lambert Pickelsimer; a daughter Cleta Pickelsimer; also by two sons James and Winston Pickelsimer.  Mrs. Pickelsimer was a member of the Blue Ridge Church of Christ.

            Surviving Mrs. Pickelsimer are two daughters and one son-in-law, Theresa Brawley of Blairsville, Anita and Joe Halstead of Ringold, GA; four sons and daughters-in-law, Nelson and althea Pickelsimer of Blairsville, Marvin and Regina Pickelsimer of Dallas, GA, Quinton and Debra Pickelsimer of Elko, GA, Darvin and Sherry Pickelsimer of Jasper, GA; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Pat Postell of Ducktown, TN; three sisters and two brothers-ion-law, Ruth and Ralph Newsome of Dallas, GA, Margie Stringer of Mineral Bluff, GA, Glenda and Doyle Petty of Mineral Bluff; daughter-in-law, Frankie Pickelsimer of Blue Ridge; son-in-law, Donald Brawley of Blairsville; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Monday, June 23, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Minister Terry Stuart officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Wes Brawley, Alan, Alex and Shawn Pickelsimer, Kenny Duckworth and Eric Davenport.  Interment followed in the Upper Wilscott Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-9 p.m.

            Mrs. Gladys Martin, age 85, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, June 20, 2008 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Gladys was born Friday, April 27, 1923 in Caledonia County, VT to the late William McGrail and the late Ruth Austin McGrail.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville; the Order of The Eastern Star; Blairsville Chamber of Commerce and The Union County Historical Society.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Wheeler; and brothers Merrill and Roger McGrail. following an extended illness

            Survivors include her loving husband, D.L. Martin of Blairsville; daughter & son-in-law, Libby and Jack Stevens of Blairsville; daughter & son-in-law, Carolyn and Donnie Hutson of Blairsville; grandson, martin Stevens of Fairburn GA; grandson and wife Johnny and Sheri Stevens of Blairsville, GA; granddaughter and husband, Chantelle and Tony Henderson of Blairsville, GA; great-grandchildren, Addie and Aspen Stevens and Gracen and Zion Paul Henderson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held Monday, June 23, 2008 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral  Home with Rev. Danny Parris officiating.  Music was provided by The Kelley Trio.  Honorary pallbearers included the following gentlemen: Jack lance, Charles Hill, Elliott Hill, Ray Rogers, Bud Nichols, Jack Jones, Lamar Paris, Gene Sprayberry, and Gollie Easter.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 22.  memorial contributions may be made to your choice: First Baptist Church of Blairsville Building Fund or First United Methodist Church of Union County Building Fund.

evelyn bullard lewis

            Mrs. Evelyn Bullard Lewis, age 81, of Blairsville, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2008 in Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Lewis was born on September 3, 1926 in Appling County, the daughter of the late Remus Bennett Bullard, Sr. and the late Ida McKinney Bullard.  She was a member of St. Simons Methodist Church and later joined the First United Methodist Church of Union County.  Mrs. Lewis was a resident of St. Simons Island for 56 years.  She was preceded in death by her husband Bennie B. Lewis, Sr.; a brother, Rev. R.B. Bullard, Jr. and a sister, Loretta Litsey.

            Surviving Mrs. Lewis are a son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Ben B. Jr. and Gwenn Lewis of Blairsville; three sisters, Laura Spivey, Benez Hart and Lilly Webb all of Baxley, GA; a brother, Ronald Bullard of Baxley; two grandsons, Dusty Lewis and matt Lewis; several nieces, nephews, and  many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. from the Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ben B. Lewis, Jr. officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Brooks Carter, Barry Branch, Michael Spivey, Jeff Bullard, Chad Bullard and Jim Swain.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were, Clarence Spencer, Gwen Upchurch, Billy and Virginia Sellers, Leon and Margaret Sellers, Wayne and Helen Jones, John and Liz McDonald, Dave Sellers and Jane Strickland.  Interment  followed in St. Simons Island, GA.  Remembrances may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Union County Family Life Center, 859 Hwy. 515, Blairsville, GA 30512 in memory of Mrs. Lewis.

lawrence harrison lee

 

            Mr. Lawrence Harrison Lee, age 74, of Nottley Dam Rd., Blairsville passed away on Monday, June 16, 2008 following an extended illness.  Mr. Lee was born on March 12, 1934 in Union County, the son of the late Harley and Della Lee.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Cross, Marie Marlow and Anna Laura Jones; two brothers, Hobert and Otis Lee and also a grandson, Craig Lee.  Mr. lee was a member of Star Creek Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mr. Lee are three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Homer Hunter of Morganton, Norma Jean and B.L. Anderson of Blairsville, Melissa and Stevie Abercrombie of Blairsville; four sons and three daughters-in-law, William and Cathy Lee of Blairsville, Wendall Lee of Blairsville, Edgar and Michelle Lee of Blairsville, Tony and Kathy Lee of Blairsville; two sisters and one brother-in-law,  Ina and Clyde Payne of Blairsville, Elsie Anthony of jasper; eighteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Waylon Lovine officiating.  Special music was presented by the Faith Singers. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Daniel Abercrombie, Dustin Lee, Ryan Lee, Kenny Payne, Steve Morris and David Taylor.   Interment  followed in the Hemptown Baptist Church Cemetery.

            Mr. Laban Hedgecock, age 83 of Morganton, GA, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Mr. Hedgecock was born Friday, October 3, 1924 in Union County, GA to the late John Peter Hedgecock and the late Gertrude Beaver Hedgecock.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Lee Ledford Hedgecock; daughter, Joe Ann Hedgecock; grandson, Matthew Mashburn; granddaughter, Rosetta Hedgecock; and sisters Margie Wells and Cecile Parris; brothers, Oscar, Marvin, Horace, Hoyt, William (Bill), and Buford Hedgecock.

            Surviving family members include: daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Lawrence beaver of Morganton, GA, Frances and John C. Foster, and Peggy and Thomas Mashburn; sons: Harold Hedgecock and Rickey Hedgecock, all of Blairsville; sister, Shirley lackey of Blairsville; and brother, Robert Hedgecock of Tennessee; 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held Friday, June 20, 2008 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Eric Davenport officiating.  Music was provided by the Jo Ann Bell Family.  Interment followed in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving  as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Clifford Foster, Ronnie Mashburn, Jeff Thomas, Brian Hedgecock, Lee Mashburn and B.J. Thomas.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday evenings, June 18 and 19th.

            Mrs. Inda Helton Evans, age 81, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.  Mrs. Evans was born Thursday, October 21, 1926 in White County, GA to the late Jake Helton and the late Alice Seabolt Evans.  Mrs. Evans was a lifelong resident of this area.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and was preceded in death by brothers: Gus, Wiley, Newman, Harley and Herschel Helton; and a sister, Lavada Helton.

            Survivors include   her husband, Richard Evans of Blairsville; son, J.W. Jones; son & daughter-in-law, Paul and Kay Jones; daughter & son-in-law, Carol and Harold King; sister, Lillie warren, all of Blairsville; brother, Roy Helton of Cleveland, GA; grandchildren: Stacy Jones, Gina Jones and Dallas Jones; great grandchildren, Tyler Crockett, Matthew Jones and Emily Jones. 

            Funeral services were held Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Garrett and Rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Music was provided by Ruth Bramlett.  Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.  Searing as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Grady Jones, Charles Totherow, J.E. Corn, Jerry Everett, Harlan Underwood and Harold King.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, June 21.  If you wish to make memorial contributions in honor of Mrs. Evans, the family suggests that donations may be made to Mt.             Mrs. Elga Sparks Burrell, age 80, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at her home.  Mrs. Burrell was born Saturday, September 3, 1927 in Fannin County, GA to the late Ralph Sparks and the late Jessie Nichols Sparks.  She was a lifelong resident of this area and a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville.  Elga was preceded in death by a son, David Burrell in 1982.

            Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Terry Kane; son and daughter-in-law, James and Pam Burrell; daughter, Vickie Burrell and son and daughter-in-law, mark and Tommie Lynn Burrell, all of Blairsville; sisters, Janet Deaver and Janice Jarrard, both of Blairsville; and Neva Jahnz of Cumming, GA; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held Friday, June 20, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. robert “robbie” edward moose

 

            Mr. Robert Edward (better known as Robby) Moose, age 37, of Pat Colwell Rd., Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at his home.  Mr. Moose was born on December 11, 1970 in Union County, the son of Garland Moose and the late Becky Collins Moose.  Robby was a native and lifelong resident of union County.  He was employed with Arnie’s Garage for the past five years.  Robby was a loving father, husband, son and brother and will be missed by all who knew him.  Mr. Moose was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mr. Moose are his wife of ten years, Amy Lynn Roper Moose of Blairsville; two sons, Bobby Garland and Jesse Isaak Moose; two daughters, Maya Nicole and Maysa Lynn Moose all of Blairsville; father, Garland Moose of Suches; one brother and sister-in-law, Rodney and Jamie Moose of Blairsville; one sister, Carrie Moose of Blairsville; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Zollinger officiating.  Special music was presented by  Evan Hughes.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Lief and Eric Eckburg, Coy Dockery, Kevin Fincher, Justin Fugel, Dwayne, Garth and Steven Moose.    Interment  followed in the Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.

james goode

 

            Mr. James Goode of 1080 Peachtree Lane, Blairsville, age 88, son of Grace Pugh Goode & Roy Merrill, passed away June 18, 2008 following a long fight against Parkinson’s  He was born in Gastonberg, AL, graduated from Murphy High School. In Mobile, AL in 1937 he went in training with Waterman Steamship Co. as a cadet (workaway) for seaman, at one penny a month.  He joined Army Air Corps in 1941, achieved rack of Tech Sgt. And served in the China-Burma-India Theater under General Chennault and his Flying Tigers.  During this time, he fought as an amateur heavy weight boxer.  In 1946 he left the army and married Marjorie Harkins of Orlando, FL.  He was a private detective until l1949 when he joined Orlando Police Department.  Mr. Goode obtained a Master’s degree from Rollins College in Criminal Justice and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy.  He was appointed Chief of Police of Orlando in 1973 and retired in 1976 after serving 26 years on the Orlando Police Department.  Jim and Marjorie were married 61 years.  Upon retirement, they moved to Union county, GA.

            Survivors include four children: David James Goode of Orlando, Richard Lee Goode, John Gary Goode and Marcia Goode Stewart; nine grandchildren: Kristy, Melissa, Aaron, Adam, Jenna, Dustin, Matt, Ian & Andrew, and two great-grandchildren Joelle, & Ocean.

            A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Whitley officiating.  Special music was presented by Rev.  Gerald Flake.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Blairsville Parkinson’s Support group care of Paula Wilde, 7340 Sandalwood Rd., Blairsville, GA 30512 in memory of Mr. Goode.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Interment  followed in

            Thelma Louise Backman, age 86 of Blairsville, GA passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 following a period of declining health.  She was born to the late Carla and Ruth Keifer Acree on January 03, 1922 in Andrew County, MO.

            She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jane Richards, of Hiawassee, GA; son, Mr. C. Bruce Matlock, of Highland, CA; brother, Mr. Brig Acree, of Redondo Beach, CA; sister, Mrs. Esther Blackwood, of Barstow, CA; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
