Philip Lee Clapp passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 23, 2013 in Blairsville, GA.  Prior to moving to Blairsville, Lee resided in Montgomery, AL for 30 years.   He was born in Asheville, NC on November 15, 1942.  He is the son of the late Dr. Hubert Lee and Celeste Knoefel Clapp from Swannanoa, NC.

Lee was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and the School of Banking at Louisiana State University.  He retired in 2010 after a successful banking career at Regions Bank and Servis First Bank in Montgomery.

Lee’s love for the outdoors began with the Boy Scouts where he earned the highest rank as an Eagle Scout.  Lee shared his love for backpacking, hiking and camping with his wife, family and friends.

Lee was a member of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church where he ushered and served on the Board of Stewards.  A man of great faith, Lee participated in the Walk to Emmaus, a spiritual journey for Christian leaders. 

Lee was a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather and will be remembered by family and friends for his integrity, loyalty and dedication. 

Lee is survived by his wife of 31 years, Pamela Holland Clapp; his children Alison Clapp White (Walt), Tuscaloosa, AL; Philip Talbot Clapp, Swannanoa, NC; and Michael Shane Sweatt (Hope), Lexington, SC; grandchildren Philip Tyler Clapp, Swannanoa, NC, Callie Grace, Tate, John Pearson and Wilson Sweatt, Lexington, SC; sister Carolyn Clapp McRary (John), Asheville, NC; twin brother Dr. Hubert Bruce Clapp (Bernie), Winston-Salem, NC and sisters-in-law Charlotte Pipkin (Donnie), Cochran, Ga; Gina Holland (Mike), Maryville, TN.

The family received friends beginning at noon on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery, AL followed by a celebration of Lee’s life at 2 p.m.  A graveside service was held on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Swannanoa, 372 Bee Tree Road, Swannanoa, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy at P.O. Box 807, Harper's Ferry, WV 25425 or to a favorite charity.

vera lorraine goodwin

 

                Mrs. Vera Lorraine Goodwin, age 95, of Little Ed Rd., Blairsville passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 at Heritage Health Care in Blue Ridge, GA. She was born July 15, 1917 in Greenville, SC to the late Harrison and Margaret (Dyer) Collins. She was an early resident of Union County and moved to Atlanta then moved in 1992 back to Union County. Mrs. Goodwin was a very loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Preceding her in death was her husband, James Levi Goodwin in 1985, son, James Thomas Goodwin in 1995 and a brother, Blaine Collins. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

            Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Parham officiating. Music was by Sandi Brock and Teddy Clark.  Pallbearers were James Clark, Gerald Morenz, Charles Raper, Ralph Robbins, Lewis Schoettle and Donald Theriault.  Interment followed in West View Cemetery in Atlanta, GA Thursday at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers make memorial contributions to Faith Baptist Church. The family received friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

robert "bob" henry little

 

            Mr. Robert “Bob” Henry Little, age 88, of Blairsville passed away June 23, 2013 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Mr. Little was born March 25, 1925 in Bronx, New York. He was an active member and church leader of Coosa United Methodist Church for many years.

            Mr. Little was a World War II veteran, having seen action in the Pacific Theatre of Operations with the 130th Naval Construction Battalion. He was a member of the Blairsville VFW Post 7394.

            Survivors are his wife, Irene of Blairsville, daughter, Kathryn and Jeff Cox of Rollins, Montana, sister, Anita Jaffe, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

            Memorial services were held at Coosa United Methodist Church on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Roy Watkins and Rev. Earl Bishop officiating. Special music was performed by Cynthia Lumme' and Mr. James Stevens. Visitation was at the church from 10 until 11 a.m.

            In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Coosa United Methodist Church “Little White Church” in memory of Bob Little.

barry dean patterson

 

Mr. Barry Dean Patterson, age 58, of Pearl Drive, Blairsville passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2013 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Patterson was born on Oct. 28, 1954 in Wurzburg, Germany the son of the late Preston Hayes Patterson and the late Wanda Lee Clement Patterson. A military family.

Barry was a veteran of the US Army of the Vietnam War. Barry was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing.  He loved to praise and worship His God. He was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle. One of his favorite quotes was “I am a hundred times bigger on the inside than on the outside”  from Smith Wigglesworth.  He was preceded in death by his parents and also a sister Marcia Duvall. Barry was a member of the Tri State Christian Center.

Surviving Barry are his loving wife of  nineteen years, Theda Carol Ross Patterson of Blairsville, one daughter, Rachel Anne Patterson of Blairsville, step father, Bill Clement of Blairsville, one sister, Karen Collins of Blairsville, one brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Teresa Patterson of Blairsville, three nieces, Grace Patterson, April Krieger and Amy Byars all of Blairsville, two nephews, Jeremy Duvall and Travis Collins both of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 3, 2013 at 1 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Gary Patterson, Rev. Shep Calhoun and Rev. Mike England officiating. Special music will be presented by The Hosanna Staff, Nikki Mcilory, and Theda Patterson. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Pat Snow, James Gibson, Travis Collins, Keith Wilson, Michael Duvall, Jon Krieger and Jeremy Duvall. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Tony Jordan and Jack King. Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery with the North GA. Honor Guard conducting military honors. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m.

                Mr. James B. Lichtenberger, age 89, of Redds Lane, Blairsville passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. He was born September 3, 1923 in Mansfield, OH to the late Frank J. and Hazel (Bacon) Lichtenberger. He had lived here for the past 10 years coming here from Palm Coast, FL. Mr. Lichtenberger was a retired U.S.M.C. Major. He was a member of the VFW, Marine Corps Assocation, (sic) Chosin Few, 1st Marine Division Association and Military Officers Association of America. Mr. Lichtenberger was of the Christian Faith.

            Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Beverly Lichtenberger of Blairsville, GA, children, Glen B. Lichtenberger of Geneva, OH, Rae and Alan Breed of Mineral Bluff, GA and Jim E. and Natalia Lichtenberger of Mobile, AL, two nieces, Pamm Mosey and Jana Tep.

            A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. In lieu of flowers make memorial donations to the Wounded Warriors.

james conrad gilreath

 

Mr. James Conrad Gilreath, age 68, of Forrester Lane, Blairsville passed away on Sunday June 30, 2013 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Gilreath was born on March 4, 1945 in Ducktown, TN, the son of the late Ralph Gilreath and the late Stella Forrester Gilreath. James graduated from the A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville, NC. in 1963. He then received a degree in welding from the Asheville Industrial Education Center. He was then employed with Lockheed in Marietta for several years and then with Tennessee Chemical Company for over sixteen years. He also owned his own dairy for over ten years. On November 30, 1972 he married the love of his life and best friend Glenda. The light of his life was his wife Glenda and his daughter Abby, which he was always so proud of. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Stella Gilreath, grandparents, Murphy Shope and Joseph Hershel Gilreath and J.C. and Vesta Forrester, his father-in-law, Charles Rogers and a brother, Lathan Gilreath. Mr. Gilreath was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Gilreath are his loving wife of forty years, Glenda Rogers Gilreath of Blairsville, one daughter and son-in-law, Abby and Derek Jackson of Blairsville, a half sister, Melanie and Rod Kuykendall of Asheville, a step sister, Cindy Arnette of Asheville, mother-in-law, Evelyn Rogers of Blairsville, brother-in-law, Darrell and Sharon Rogers of Ellijay, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Young officiating. Special music was presented by Darrell and Sharon Rogers. The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Gerald Clement, J.M. Dyer, Jamie King, Tommy Davis, Grady Jones and Greg Gilreath. Interment  followed in the Meadow View Cemetery. The family met with friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Mrs. Bonnie Beatrice Donnelly, age 87, of Rocking Horse Farm Rd., Blairsville, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Union General Hospital following an extended illness. She was born May 26, 1926 in Cartersville, GA to the late Walter Grady and Edna (Steed) Morris. She moved here 26 years ago from Forest Park, GA. Mrs. Donnelly loved crocheting and was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. J. Donnelly in 2004 and a son, Mark K. Donnelly in 2007. Mrs. Donnelly was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Survivors include her children, Dane Donnelly of Great Falls, MT, Timothy Donnelly and his wife Paula of Fayetteville, GA, Bonnie Garrett and her husband Larry of Blairsville, GA and Andrew Donnell of Blairsville, GA, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wade Plott officiating. Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens.                 Mr. Farrell “Buck” Smith, age 56, of Hwy. 515, Blairsville passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013 at his home following an extended illness. He was born September 30, 1956 in Young Harris, GA. Buck loved Jesus and going to church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and playing guitar. He was a loving father, son, brother and grandfather. Buck was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church.
