            Mr. George Wilton Middleton, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, June 20, 2008 at his home.

            Mr. Middleton was born Sunday, April 17, 1932 in Waco, Texas, to the late Lester and the late Ida Medinka Middleton.  He attended Blairsville First Baptist Church.  Mr. Middleton cared deeply for his family.  Mr. Middleton was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, and served during the Korean Conflict.  He was also a member of the ROMEO Club, Blairsville Chapter.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Thornton Middleton.

            Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Valerie & Byron Adams of Memphis, Tennessee; daughter & son-in-law, Vanessa & Neal watts of Cullman, Alabama; son, Art Middleton of Blairsville, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki & Kyle McManus of McDonough, Georgia; brother, Carroll Middleton of Tours, Texas.  Grandchildren include: Ashley Adams, Daniel Adams, Aaron Adams, Philip & Angie Adams, Adrian Adams, Joshua Adams, Avery Watts, Jamie Watts, Karla Watts, Ryan McManus, Sean McManus and Shelby McManus.  Great grandchildren include: Ava grace Adams, Devon Wallace and Ace Hamilton.  He also leaves many, many dear friends behind.

            Funeral services were held Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Aaron Pardue officiating.  Music was provided by Rev. Adam Pardue.  Military honors were presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 3 until 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to your choice: American Kidney Foundation, American Cancer Society, or to Esther Academy.

            Mr. Franklin Cook, age 75, of Marietta, GA, formerly of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008.

            Mr. Cook was born Wednesday, January 11, 1933 in Union County, A, to the late John Waco Cook and the late Ulma Akins Cook.  He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church, the United Auto Workers and was a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Korean Conflict.  He was preceded in death by a brother, J.W. Cook.

            Survivors include his loving wife, Frances Sampson Cook of Marietta; daughter & son-in-law, Melissa Cook and David Sherman of Woodstock; step grandson, Matthew Vansickle, also of Wookstock; sister and brother-in-law, Verna Ree and Harold Shuler of Blairsville; sister-in-law, Bill McDaris Cook of Norcross, Georgia.

            Funeral services were held Sunday, July 6, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hogsed and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Music was provided by Martha Cone.  Interment followed in Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors conducted by The North Georgia Honor Guard.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Jimmy Cook, Kenny Cook, Robert Gee, Danny Gee, Melvin Cook, and Craig Cook.  Honorary pallbearers included: Leon Gee, Wymer Sampson, JR., Preston Cook, Waymon Cook, and Harold Shuler.

            The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Saturday, July 5.

            Mrs. Jean Mathis age 73 of Marietta, Georgia, died Friday, June 27, 2008.

            Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 30 from the chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna with the Rev. Mike Woods officiating.  Interment was in Crestlawn memorial park Cemetery.

            A native of Blairsville, GA, Mrs. Mathis was a member of Chattahoochee First Baptist Church and was a homemaker.  She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Mathis.

            Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Hal Williams of Marietta, Georgia; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Terri Mathis of Marietta, GA; Robert and Vickie Mathis of Ringgold, GA; Mark Mathis of Smyrna, GA; brothers: Jim Deyton, Jerry Deyton, both from Atlanta, GA and Billy Deyton from FL; sisters: Frances Henson, form Blairsville, GA; Jeanette Jones, Nell Powell, Lynn Zeitouni, from Marietta, GA and Jo Davis, from Stone Mountain, GA, and eight grandchildren.

alexander macdougald II

 

            Alexander MacDougald II, age 56, after a long illness, entered into rest on Friday, June 25, 2008 at his residence surrounded by his sons.  Mr. MacDougald was a native of Atlanta but for many years had been a resident of Union County, and more recently, a resident of Towns County.  He owned Hooper Branch Organic Farm in Hiawassee, GA.  Mr. MacDougald was preceded in death by his father, Gilmer Adams MacDougald, and his brother, Gilmer Adams MacDougald, Jr.

He is survived by his sons, Levin Alexander MacDougald, of Athens, GA; Ian Alexander MacDougald, of Woodstock, GA; Stratton Alexander MacDougald, of Hiawassee, GA; mother and step-father, Betty and Ted Will of Atlanta, GA; sister, Jessie M. bass, of Augusta, GA; niece, Sarah Bass Versaggi (John) of Alexandria, VA; sister, Sarah M. Buchly (Pete) of Atlanta, GA; niece, Elizabeth Buchly and nephew, Will Buchly, both of Atlanta.

mary fullington hudgins

 

            Mary Fullington Hudgins, age 87, of Blairsville, died Monday at Union County Nursing Home, two days before her 88th birthday.

            She was born in Pinehurst on July 2, 1920, and was the fourth of ten children born to the alt James D. Fullington and Mary Adina Wilson Fullington.  In the early 1940’s, she moved to Wildwood, Florida, with her husband, the late Olin W. Hudgins, and their young son.  Later, they moved to Orlando where their daughter was born.  She worked for Crown Cork & Sea, Co. until her retirement in 1973.  Following her husband’s retirement,  they began to travel and fell in love with the mountains of Blairsville, Georgia, and soon made it their second home and finally their full-time home.

            She was a member of Killarney Baptist Church in Orlando, but in recent years her health made it impossible for her to attend, so she rarely missed a television sermon.  It was her belief that the Lord wants His people to be involved in church and love everyone.

            Mrs. Hudgins loved her family and her friends and appreciated all the good Lord blessed her with.  She also had a great love for gardening and flowers and that love was inspired by her early years living on a rural farm during the depression.

            She is survived by her children, James Olin Hudgins of Christmas, Fl and Linda Hudgins Thornton (Jerry) of Blairsville; sisters, Martha Brown of Vienna and Helen Chester of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, James Olin Hudgins, Jr. (Joy) of Orlando, FL, Jeri Lynn Thornton Dalessio (Joseph Anthony) and Mary Cacindra “Cindy” Thornton Flater (Gregory Allen); great grandchildren, James Olin Hudgins, III, Heaven Hudgins, Anthony Kluba, Brittany Dalessio, Joey Dalessio, Brandon Dalessio, Victoria Dalessio, Ben Flater and Angel Falter.

            She was preceded in death by her infant son, Tommy Hudgins; brothers, John, Joe and Lon Fullington and sisters, Jimmie Reed, Evelyn Lewis, Polly Gore and Betty Dubey.

            Funeral services were at 11 AM Saturday in the chapel of Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home.  Rev. Ken Zollinger officiated and interment followed in Pinehurst City Cemetery.

            The family greeted friends from 6 – 8 PM Friday at the funeral home.

            Mrs. Ruby Fisher, age 80, of Poplar Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Fisher was born on March 10, 1928 in Sevierville, TN, the daughter of the late Henry Sizemore and the late Tilda Lunsford Sizemore.  Mrs. Fisher was a loving mother and grandmother.  Her favorite pastime was shopping.  Mrs. Fisher was of the Baptist faith.

            Surviving Mrs. Fisher are one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Cecila Ann Fisher of Atlanta, two daughters and one son-in-law, Charlotte Bagwell of Atlanta, Barbara and Joel Wilson of Blairsville, one brother, Roy Sizemore of Sevierville, TN, four grandchildren, Moena Broadnax of Conyers, Davey and Lisa Childers of Conyers, Randy Curtis Fisher of Stockbridge, Jay Childers of Stockbridge, several great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

linda rose spiva carlyle

 

            Mrs. Linda Rose Spiva Carlyle, age 58, of Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at the home of her mother following an extended illness.  Mrs. Carlyle was born on Feb. 9, 1950 in Union County, the daughter of Lawanda Reece Spiva and the late Ulric Spiva.  She was a native and lifelong resident of union County.  She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sky Lark Howard.  Mrs. Carlyle was a member of the Owltown Church of God.

            Surviving Mrs. Carlyle are her loving husband of nineteen years, Billy Carlyle of Blairsville, mother Lawanda Spiva of Blairsville, two daughters, Melonie Walton of Blairsville, Pam Evans of Blairsville, one son Jeff Spiva of Blairsville, four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Dr. Gene and Wendy Spiva of Blairsville, Ricky Spiva of Cheyenne, WY, James and Rita Spiva of Blairsville, Jerry and Deborah Spiva of Blairsville, three sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Johnny Glazner of Blue Ridge, Peggy and Chuck Patrick of Brasstown, NC, Ruth and Rex Patterson of Hayesville, sixteen grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Monday, July 7, 2008 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Michael Anderson and Rev. Terry Reece officiating.  Special music was presented by Peggy Patrick, Debbie Glazner and Ruth Patterson.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Steve, Dewayne and Derek Cook, Gene Spiva, Jason Patrick and Amos Patterson.  Interment  followed in the Owltown Church of God Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m.

            Mr. Frank Grant Gayle, age 79, of Walnut Springs Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at his home following a sudden illness.  Mr. Gayle was born on March 7, 1931, in Jacksonville, FL, the son of the late Laurence Gayle and the late Anna Grant Gayle.  He was a veteran of the US Navy.  He had retired as a pharmacist.  One of his hobbies was being an avid photographer.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Pearson Gayle in 2004.  Mr. Gayle was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mr. Gayle are two sons, Howard Gayle of Campbell City, CA, Terry Gayle of Friday harbor, WA, one brother, Laurence Gayle Jr., of Charleston, SC, one sister, Isabel Dunphy of Dahlonega, GA, al of his church family, a host of loving and caring neighbors, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 3 p.m. from Choestoe Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Zollinger officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Choestoe Baptist Church in memory of Mr. Gayle.

            Mrs. Grace Weaver Daniels, age 80, of Bald View Rd., Young Harris, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Daniels was born on Oct. 2, 1927, in Union County, the daughter of the late O. Wayne Weaver and the late Edna Jarrett Weaver.  She graduated at Union County High School.  She was preceded in death by a daughter Cricket Spiva, a son Timothy Spiva, her former husband, Walt Spiva, three brothers, Eugene, Paul and Dick Weaver.  Mrs. Daniels was a member of Old Union Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mrs. Daniels are her loving husband of thirty five years, Tommy Daniels of Young Harris, two daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny and Lee Rainwater of Roswell, GA, Kristie and Joe Payne of Cumming, GA, two step daughters, Janie and Jack Knight of Jasper, GA, Debbie and Donald Keys of Young Harris, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Bobbie and J.W. Payne of Blairsville, Janice Morgan of Forest Park, GA, one brother and sister-in-law, Corky and Carol Weaver of Enon, OH, eight grandchildren, Chris Rogers, Amanda Payne, Chasity Casey, Adam Payne, Julie Harrison, Michael, and Mathew Rainwater and Stacy Harrison, eight great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Blone Purcell Thompson, age 82, died Friday, July 4, 2008 in the Union County Nursing Home, after an extended illness.  She was born in Kentucky on August 3, 19224, and has been a resident of Blairsville since October of 2000.  She lived most of her adult life in Pasadena, CA, where she worked for many years for Price Waterhouse.  She returned to Georgia to be near family and lived at Branan Lodge for a number of years.  She was a member of Grace Community Presbyterian Church in Blairsville.  A graveside service was held Tuesday, July 8 at 11 a.m. in Gainesville, GA at the Alta Vista Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the grace Community Presbyterian Church.  A.             Mrs. Eiko Baxter, age 77 of Murphy Hwy., Blairsville, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30, 2008 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Baxter was born on Aug. 7, 1930, in Japan, the daughter of the late Tasanoro Takahasi and Hana Yonezawa Takahasi.  Eiko loved fishing, crocheting, and most of all, loved her husband, children and grandchildren.  Mrs. Baxter was of the Interdenominational faith.

            Surviving Mrs. Baxter are her loving husband of fifty seven years, Phillip Baxter, Sr., of Blairsville, six children, Suzan Baxter of Blairsville, Gary and Rebecca Baxter of Phenix City, AL, William Baxter of Blairsville, Tammy and Mike Vaughn of Blairsville, Phillip Baxter of Hiawassee, Michael and Millie Baxter of Blairsville, five grandchildren, Jessie Vaughn, Katie and Haley Baxter, Krissy Carmon and Melodie Baxter, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            A memorial service was held on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Scott Lance.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Baxter.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1-2 p.m.
