Mrs. Alma
D. Panter, age 63, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, June
26, 1997
in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs.
Panter was born in Union County, Georgia on September
26, 1933, a daughter of the late John Deyton and Rurie Self Deyton. She was a lifelong resident of this area and
was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Her husband, Richard Panter, passed away in 1973.
Surviving
are daughter
and son-in-law, Minnie and Bryan Watson, of Blairsville; step sons,
Frank
Panter of Hemptown, Hugh Panter of Blue Ridge, Randall Panter of Ohio,
and
Ralph Panter of Hemptown; step daughters, Rosemary Panter of Blue
Ridge, Evelyn
Payne of Blue Ridge, and Marie Chancey of Tunnell Hill, GA.; sisters,
Louise
Everett of Buford, GA.; Cora Lee Carpenter of Blairsville, Elsie Payne
and Sudy
Bell Bingham, both of Flowery Branch, GA., Mary Jane Weaver of
Blairsville;
brother, Henry Deyton of Dahlonega; granddaughter, Sasha Watson; many
step
grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, June 28, 1997 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Jimmy Rogers, Rev. Brent Chatham
and Rev.
Mark Towery, Jr. officiating. The
following
gentlemen served as pallbearers: Robert Carpenter, Jack Carpenter,
Cecil
brewer, Franklin Weaver, Tommy Panter, and Troy Dyer.
Special music was presented by the Liberty
Church Choir. Interment was in Liberty
Baptist Cemetery, under the direction of Cochran Funeral Home of
Blairsville.

Keith
David Bragg, the oldest son of Keith Bragg of Blairsville, died in an
automobile
accident in Los Angeles, California on June 21, 1997.
he was born on
October 20, 1970 in Brunswick, Georgia.
He was a
greensman for the motion picture industry, working
on movies including “Forrest Gump:, :The
Jungle Book”,
“Powder”, :Volcano”, and several others.
He was working on a film entitled “Deep Impact” on location near
Castaic
Lake in California at the time of his death.
He is
survived b his wife, Kathy Callahan Bragg and a son,
Zachary Richmond Bragg of Sante Fe, Texas; a son, Travis Keith Bragg of
Brunswick, Georgia; his mother, Brenda Wynn of Brunswick, Georgia; a
sister,
Millie McCarthy of Brunswick, Georgia; three brothers, Christopher,
Caleb, and
Levi Bragg al of Blairsville; his step-mother, Olivia Bragg of
Blairsville; his
grandparents. Doyle and Nell Bragg of Brunswick and Mildred Keene of
Brunswick;
his paternal great grandmother, Lillie Holcomb of Waynesboro, Georgia
and man
cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Keith was
a member of the Church of Christ.
Funeral
services were at Crowder Funeral Chapel in
Dickinson, Texas on Friday, June 27th.

Mr.
Sidney
Oliver Hazzard, age 78, of Helen, Georgia, GA, passed away Wednesday,
July 2,
1997 at his home following an extended illness.
Mr. Hazzard was a native of Connecticut, and was a veteran of
the U.S. Navy. Mr. Hazzard had lived in
Blairsville for five
years before moving to Helen. He was a
member of Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville.
Mr. hazard was a
past president of Brasstown Bald Chapter of national Association of
retired
Federal Employees, and was a member of Washington Lodge, #5 in North
Kingston,
Rhode Island.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy E.
Hazzard of Helen, GA.; three
children, Russell Hazzard of Goldsboro, N.C., Hollie Hazzard Smith of
Glen, New
Hampshire, and randy Hazzard of South Attleboro, Rhode Island; three
grandchildren also survive.
Memorial
services will be held at a later date.

mrs. florence harkins winterfeld
Mrs.
Florence Harkins Winterfeld, age 55, of Eatonton, Georgia, formerly of
Blairsville,
passed away Friday, June 27, 1997 following an extended illness.
Mrs.
Winterfeld was born in Union County, Georgia, on
October 14, 1941, the daughter of the late Johnny and Delia Patterson
Harkins. She was a member of Northside
Baptist Church in Milledgeville, Georgia, and had lived in Eatonton for
the
past 22 years. Besides her parents, Mrs.
Winterfeld had been preceded in death by two brothers, S.G. Harkins and
Eugene
Harkins.
Surviving
are her husband, Robert Winterfeld of Eatonton, GA.; step-daughter,
Michele
Dudley of Omaha, Nebraska; brother and sister-in-law, A.J. and Laverne
Harkins
of Smyrna, GA.; sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and George Buchanan of
Blairsville; and brother, Bobby Harkins of Blairsville; several nieces,
nephews
and other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held Monday, June 30, 1997 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of
Cochran Funeral
Home in Blairsville with Rev. Rev. Jerry Pickard officiating. Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine
Young. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Sheldon Patterson, Vernon
Patterson, Elmer Mason, Scott Ray, Bill Anderson, and Eric Buchanan. Interment was in Philadelphia Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Mrs.
Avie Burnette Reece, age 75, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Sunday, June
29, 1997 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Mrs.
Reece was born in Union County, Georgia on June 28,
1922, a daughter of the late John C. Burnette and Alice Seabolt
Burnette. She was a homemaker and a member
of Shady
Grove Methodist Church. Her husband,
Josiah Reece, preceded her in death.
Surviving
are her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Benny Cooper of Marietta,
GA.; and
daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Lorne Cosner of Blairsville;
sisters,
Lillie Reece of Blairsville, Mattie Cantrell of Dahlonega, GA., Naomi
Reece of
Augusta, GA. and Lela Stephens of Blairsville; and a brother, Anceberry
Burnette of Blairsville; two grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews also
survive.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, July 1, 1997 at 1 p.m. form the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Honaker officiating. Special
music was presented by June
Grounds. The following gentlemen served
as pallbearers: Bill Burnette, Alan Hamby, Johnny Burnette, Rick Lance,
Bill
Wilson, Bobby Joe Queen, and Steve Reece.

James
M. Thompson, age 70, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday,
July 2,
1997 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Dr.
Thompson was born in Hancock County, Ohio on July 26,
1926, a son of the late Harry T. Thompson, and Marian Crispin Thompson. He was employed by the USDA as a plant
geneticist. He was a veteran of the U.S.
Navy and served during World War II, and the Korean War.
Dr. Thompson was a resident of the
Blairsville area from 1963-1970, and then returned to Blairsville in
1986. He was a member of the Blairsville
Kiwanis
Club, the Southern Fruit Fellowship and was a former president of the
Georgia
Horticultural Society. Mr. Thompson
graduated from Fidley (sic) High School in Findley, Ohio in 1944, and
then
earned his masters and PhD in Agronomy from Ohio State.
In Clinton, Iowa, he was employed with a
field corn hybrid company for seven years.
During the years of 1963-1970, he was a geneticist working at
the
Georgia experiment Station, he was
responsible for
releasing several apple and plum cultivars during his tenure with the
U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
Surviving
are his wife, Manon S. Thompson of Blairsville; daughter, Kay T. Wright
of
Conyers, GA.; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kim Thompson of
Canton, GA.;
and son, James Martin Thompson of Dunwoody, GA.; four grandchildren,
Brian
Wright of Conyers, Adam Thompson, Michelle Thompson, and Kevin
Thompson, all of
Canton.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, July 5, 1997 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home of
Blairsville with Rev. Troy Acree and Rev. Dr. Robert
Darby officiating. Special music was
presented by Barry Malac
and Mary Lee Olsen. The following
gentlemen served as pallbearers: Dennis
Thompson, Jim Dobson, Junior Duckworth, Herman Garrett, Bobb Garrison,
and Fred
Michael. Interment was in Union Memory
Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs.
Agnes E. Baxter, age 88, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday,
July 1,
1997 after a period of declining health.
She had lived in Blairsville for the past 35 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr.
Jesse J. Baxter. Mrs. Baxter was born in
Lincoln County, GA, the daughter of George Cox and Sally Mumford Cox.
She is
survived by three sons, Mr. Robert Baxter of Winder,
GA., Mr. Phillip Baxter of Blairsville, GA., and Larry Baxter of
Lilburn, GA.;
one sister, Mrs. Sally R. Ray of Elberton, GA.; 12 grandchildren, 25
great
grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and a number of nieces and
nephews.
Graveside
services were held on Thursday, July 3, 1997 from Evergeen Memorial
Park in
Athen, (sic) GA. at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jack Seagers officiating. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Wayne Baxter,
Gary Baxter, Bill Baxter, Michael Baxter, Bryon Baxter, Johnny Baxter,
and
Phillip Baxter. Banister
