j.d. daniel

 

Mr. J.D. Daniel, age 80, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 at his home.  Mr. Daniel was born Saturday, February 26, 1927 in Chula, GA to the late Zora Daniel and the late Ruth Dowdy Daniel.  He had been a resident of Union County since 1980, moving here from De-ca-tur, GA.  Mr. Daniel was a WW II Navy Veteran, having served with the Seabees and was a member of The American legion.  Mr. Daniel was also a private pilot.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Daniel, as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zora Daniel.

Survivors include: daughter, Charlene Shearer of Dacula, GA; sister, Lila Canglin of Stone Mountain, GA; brothers, Jack Daniel and Jerry Daniel, both of Covington, GA; grandson, Chris Norris; great-granddaughter, Alexandria Norris; and great-grandson, Taylor Gray Norris.  Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 5, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with the rev. Jerry Helton  officiating.  Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens with graveside military honors provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Chris Norris, Stephen Pye, Steve Cole, Matt Cole, Stewart Shearer, and Jim Melvin.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 12-2, Thursday, July 5.

james “jim” e. holbrooks

 

Mr. James “Jim” E. Holbrooks, age 86, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Ellijay, GA, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2007, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Mr. Holbrooks was born July 24, 1920, to his parents, Sammuel and Mary Mason Holbrooks, in Union County, GA.  He was a member of the Baptist faith, a graduate of Gilmer County High School.  As a World War II veteran, he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre of War aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard CV-31, as a seaman gunner 1st class.  Mr. Holbrooks was a retired sawyer, and had been employed at Kiker Lumber Company.

Surviving family members include his wife, Bobbie Lee Holbrooks, of Blairsville; sons and daughters-in-law: Earl and Debbie Holbrooks, and Carroll and Connie Holbrooks, all of Ellijay; grandchildren: Tammy H. Bowen, of Fairmount, GA; Christy H. Powell and Brandy H. McClure, both of Ellijay; six great-grandchildren; step-children: Barbara Everett Free of Blairsville; Betty Everett Bishop, of Fayetteville, GA, and Wayne Everett of Blairsville; nine step-grandchildren; and several step great and great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 7, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Logan Funeral Home Chapel in Ellijay, with Rev. Jerry Banks officiating.  Interment was in Riverhill Baptist Cemetery with military honors presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jamie Powell, John McClure, Shane Bowen, Oran Walker, Wayne Everett, and Mark Ralston.  The family received friends starting at 1 p.m. Friday, July 6th, at Logan Funeral Home

joshua “josh” alan jones

 

Mr. Joshua Alan (better known as Josh) Jones, age 19, of Brooke Lane, Blairsville passed away on Monday, July 2, 207 at his home following a sudden illness.  Josh was born on February 25, 1988 in hall County, GA, the son of Gary Alan Jones and Sheila Morris Jones.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County and had attended the Union County School System.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors.  His hobbies were riding horses, motorcycles and being with his friends.  He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Grover Morris in 1980.  Josh was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving John are his parents, Gary and Sheila Jones of Blairsville; two brothers, Joey Jones of Blairsville and Jamie Lunsford of Blairsville; maternal grandmother, Viva Morris of Suches; paternal grandparents, Arnold and Billie Jones of Blairsville; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 5, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. William Sisum, Rev. Chad Sisum and Rev. Randolph Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by Casey and Britt Jones.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Stuart Whitener, Matthew Whitener, Pepper Ledbetter, David Burrell, Christopher Ledbetter, Mitchell Foster, Little Randy Ledford and Josh Cook.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Shannon Jones, Travis Jones, randy Ledford, Jason Lunsford, Cody Thomason, Gary Foster and Jamison Williams.  Interment followed in the Liberty Hill Methodist Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening after 6 p.m.

jefferson g. “Jack” waters

 

Jefferson G. “Jack” Waters, age 74, of Blairsville, GA died suddenly Thursday morning, July 5, 2007 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA.  He was a native of Bacon County, but had lived in Blairsville, GA since 1999.  jack was the son of the late Simon Claude waters and Hattie Mullis Waters.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Waters Thomas; grandson, Anthony Wayne Waters, Jr.; and brother Clifford “Buck” waters.  He was retired from Milliken after twenty-two years and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Helen McCrea waters of Blairsville; two sons, LaDon Waters and wife Rita and Anthony “Tony” waters and wife B.J., all of Alma; daughter Pamela Starling and husband Leon of Alma; brother, Robert Waters of Alma; five sisters, Arlene Napier of Jesup, Maxene Davis and Claudine North, both of Jacksonville, FL, Jenelle Taylor and Diane Nails, both of Alma; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 8, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Corinth Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Yarborough officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The family received friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The body was carried to the church at 1 p.m. to lie in state.  Pallbearers were Richie Taylor, Randy Waters, Shane Nails, Tony Taylor, Wendell Hayes, and David Lassiter.  All others in attendance were considered as honorary escorts.

hazel birdell colbert

 

Mrs. Hazel Birdell Colbert, age 85, of Crawford Rd., Blairsville passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Colbert was born on November 30, 1921 in Robinsville, NC, the daughter of the late Casey V. Jones and the late Mary R. Anderson Jones.  She was a lifelong resident of Union County.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Dorris George Colbert in 2006; three brothers, Harold, Clyde and Toby Jones and a sister, Lina Seabolt.  Mrs. Colbert was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Colbert are two daughters and one son-in-law, Jo and Carroll Weaver of Blairsville, Elouise Weaver of Douglasville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. James and Sharon Ingram of Harem, GA, C.A. and Beverly Ingram of MA; five sisters, Ida Jackson of Blairsville, Ruth Payne of Forest Park, GA, Shirley Moore of Fayetteville, Bobbie Lou Gentry of Forest Park, Polly Henson of Blairsville; two brothers, Jack Jones of Blairsville and Rev. Tommy Jones of Blairsville; one hundred and three grand-children and great-grand-children, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James Ingram and Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by the Dyer Family.  The grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers.  Interment followed in the Union memory Gardens Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening after 5 p.m.

raymond “ray” doucette

 

Mr. Raymond “Ray” Doucette, age 70, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2007 at his residence.  Mr. Doucette was born Saturday, January 9, 1937 in Boston, MA, to the late George Doucette and the late Edna Pitts Doucette.  He was of the Catholic faith.  He was preceded in death by daughter, Annette Brewer, and two brothers, George “Bud” and William Doucette.

Survivors include: son, Ray Doucette of Blairsville; daughter, Shiela Doucette, also of Blairsville; brother, Donald E. Doucette of The Phillipines; brother, Jerry Doucette of Cape Coral, FL; grandchildren: Krista, Shane and Stephen Doucette, all of Blairsville; 3 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 7 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Regency Hospice, P.O. Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546.

dave crockett cantrell

 

Mr. Dave Crockett Cantrell, age 86, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007 at his home.  Mr. Cantrell was born Saturday, August 28, 1920 in Coker Creek, TN, to the late Harvey Cantrell and the late Viney Denny Cantrell.  He had been a resident of Union County since he moved to Blairsville with his family in 1932.  Dave was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers and 3 sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Mary “Dodie” Cantrell of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Jim Henson of Murphy, NC; son, Jack Cantrell; daughter and son-in-law, Lucille and Rex Taylor; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Brenda Cantrell; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Bill Murrin and brother, Prior Cantrell; all of Blairsville; brother, Lank Cantrell of Ballground, GA; 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Jones, Rev. Leon McDonald and Rev. Chip Gribble officiating.  Music was provided by Roy and Jonathan Swaney, Alice McDonald, Sandy Gribble, Heidi Sosebee and Joe and Lloyd Swaney.  Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Travis Cantrell, Larry Cantrell, Jody Cantrell, Roy Swaney, David Swaney and Jonathan Swaney.  Honorary pallbearers included the following gentlemen: Eddie Thompson and Paul Swaney.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-10, Monday, July 9.

r.e. “rufus” gilreath

 

R.E. “Rufus” Gilreath, age 84, of Canton, OH, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness.  Born August 20, 1922 in Suches, GA to the late Joseph H.S. and Murphy J. Shope Gilreath.  He was a Canton area resident for the past 55 years and member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII where he was a Staff Sergeant and served in the Pacific Theater.  Retired from Berger Division of Republic Steel in 1982 after 30 years of service.  He was an avid hunter and gardener.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertee Gilreath and Lois Grizzle; six brothers, Herschel, Russell, Ralph, Joseph, Hubert and Gus Gilreath.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruby E. Nicholson Gilreath; two sons and daughter-in-law, Stan and Vicky Gilreath of Massillon, OH, Rev. Steven Gilreath of Carrollton, OH; one granddaughter, Kelly Gilreath of Massillon, OH; one brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Faye Gilreath of Suches, GA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 11 a.m. in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 2615 Prairie College St. SW, Canton, OH. 44706, with pastor Ronald Howard and Rev. Steven Gilreath officiating.  Interment was in Melscheimer Cemetery.  Friends called Tuesday from 5-8 pm in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on South Cleveland Ave. and one hour prior to the serviced at the church on Wednesday 10-11 a.m.
