Mary Ogletree Johns, 77 years old of Blairsville, GA, died Friday, July 8, 2005 at her residence.

She was born Saturday, February 18, 1928 in Murray County, GA to the late Walter Ogletree and the late Essie Beckler Ogletree.

She was of the Methodist faith and active with volunteer work for many years in the various places where they lived.  One of her loves of life was to travel and she had visited Egypt, Israel, Australia, Europe, China, South Africa, Peru, Brazil, India and Panama.

Surviving are husband, Harvey Johns of Blairsville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Jerry Wells of Conyers, GA; daughter, Tamara Graham of Rochester Hills, MI; granddaughter, Stacey Jacobs of Roswell, GA; grandson, Connor Graham of Rochester Hills, MI.

Services were held at Coosa United Methodist Church Saturday, July 9, 2005 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Harold Savage officiating.  Serving as pallbearers were James Mincey, George Upchurch, Butch Quick, Randy Beckler, Glenn Masters, Gary Johns.

Interment was in Center Valley Cemetery in Eton, GA.

mrs. trudy ann ethridge

 

Mrs. Trudy Ann Ethridge, age 82, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Acworth, GA, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2005 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Ethridge was born Tuesday, February 6, 1923, in Forsyth County, GA to the late Lloyd and Annie Mae (Hight) Terry.  She was a member of Youngstown Baptist Church.  Mrs. Ethridge was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Ethridge.

Surviving family members include daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Bobby Guffey, of Topton, NC; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Mary Sue Ethridge, of Powder Springs, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Robert Colley of Panama City Beach, FL; sister, Ethel Mae Keener of Carrollton, GA; sister, Irene Charles of Cumming, GA; brother, Junior Terry, of Morrow, GA; brother, James Terry, of Douglasville, GA; nine grandchildren, seventeen step-grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 2, 2005, at 4 p.m., from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Leon Henderson officiating.  Special music was presented by Richard Terry and Louis Smith.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Carl Leavell, Ronald Ethridge, Dwayne McCalvin, Landis Hooper, Nathan Grizzle, and Richard Ethridge.  Burial was Sunday, July 3, 2005 at 1 p.m., at Crestlawn Cemetery in Atlanta, GA.

mrs. maggie alma mcclure

 

Maggie Alma McClure, age 89, native and lifelong resident of Union County, GA, passed away Friday, July 1, 2005, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. McClure was born Friday, June 2, 1916, in Union County, GA, to the late Robert and Martha (Flowers) Rich.  A homemaker, she was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.  Mrs. McClure was preceded in death by her husband, Willie McClure.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Ivor Jean and Larry McCollum of Blairsville; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 3, 2005, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Clyde Coleman and Rev. Jerry Young officiating.  Music was presented by Bethlehem Baptist Church Choir.  Burial was in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: David Stokes, Roy Hefner, Larry McCollum, Jack Dillard, Joe Dillard, and Richard Tanner.

mrs. johnnie hood evans

 

Mrs. Johnnie Hood Evans, age 87, of Fountain Inn, SC, formerly of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2005 in St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, SC.

Mrs. Evans was born Tuesday, December 18, 1917 in Union County, GA, to the late John Calvin Hood and the late Mamie Ledford Hood.  She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.  Mrs. Evans was the first woman to work on ships in the Navy shipyard in Charleston, SC, during World War II.  She was a master seamstress, having worked for many years in various capacities in Owenby’s in Blairsville and Andrews, NC.

Survivors include: son, Arbie Jonathan Evans, of Mebane, NC; daughter, Anna Jeanette Evans, of Mauldin, SC; daughter, Carolyn Lee Hallisey, also of Mauldin; son, Austin H. Evans, also of maudlin; sisters: Margie Rowell, Callie Jordan and Susie Henderson, all of Blairsville; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. R. L. Martin and Lt. Col Stephen Hallissey officiating.  The eulogy was presented by Yvonne Morrison.  Special music was presented by The Troy Phillips Family.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Robert Lamb, Christopher Lamb, Arbie Jonathan Evans, Jr., Arthur Jordan, Marty Hood, and Lewis McAfee.  Burial was in Revival Baptist Church Cemetery.

Helen Hughes Townson, age 54, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, July 4, 2005, at her home.

Mrs. Townson was born Sunday, December 17, 1950 in Cherokee County, NC, to the late William Voyd Hughes and the late Lucille Oliver Hughes.  Mrs. Townson was a lifelong resident of this area and a member of Notla Baptist Church.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Troy Dwayne and Renee Townson, of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Amanda Townson, of Hartwell, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Tom Berry of Blairsville; sister, Rosemary White of Cornelia, GA; grandchildren: Dustin, Emily Grace and Zoey Townson; aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Hughes of Murphy, NC; nephew and niece, Douglas and Kirsten White; niece, Amanda White; nephew and niece, Keith and Mary Kay Berry; nephew and niece Chad and Jessica Berry; nephew, Parker Berry; niece, Addison Berry and niece, Presley Berry.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Hoyt Brown and Rev. Kenny Beavers officiating.  Special music was presented by Martha Davenport and Cheri Parker.  Burial followed in Notla Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers: were: Dwayne Townson, Michael Townson, Keith Berry, Chad Berry, Tom Berry, and Derrick Stephens.

johnny ferris shepherd

 

Mr. Johnny Ferris Shepherd, age 56, of Old Dial Rd., Blue Ridge, formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Friday July 1, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Shepherd was born on July 9, 1948 in Hamilton, OH, the son of Nellie Ruth Brackett Shepherd and the late Doyle Shepherd.  He was a Member of the Masonic Lodge for several years.  Mr. Shepherd was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Shepherd are his loving wife of thirty four years Shirley Garren Shepherd of Blue Ridge, mother, Nellie Ruth Shepherd of Blairsville, one son, Coby Shepherd, three daughters, Angela Shepherd, Lisa Kay and Joy Shepherd all of Blue Ridge, sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Sheridan Chambers of Murphy, NC, one grandchild, Caleb Kay, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday July 3, 2005 at 4 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. William Sisum officiating.  Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Sheridan Chambers, Dalton Kay, Timmy Nix and Ricky Harkins.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery.
