Mr.
Edgar William Oliver, age 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Saturday,
July 3, 1999 at his residence.
A
native of Cherokee County, NC he was a retired self employed
businessman. He was a WWII US Army Veteran
and a member of
New Martins Creek Baptist Church. He was
the son of the late Floyd and Amanda Jane Chastain Oliver.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Vaudie Elizabeth Morris Oliver,
sister
Lucille Hughes, brothers Coy and Porter Oliver and five other brother
and
sisters.
Mr.
Oliver is survived by one son, Ralph William Oliver of Hayesville,
North
Carolina; one daughter, Shirlene Elizabeth McDonald of Akron, Ohio; one
sister,
Lillian Hughes of Murphy, NC; six grandchildren, ten great
grandchildren; one
great great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews and a host of
friends.
Funeral
services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 1999 at the Townson Rose
Funeral
Home Chapel in Murphy, NC. Rev. Lee
Chastain and Rev. Hoyt Brown will officiate.
Burial will be at the Bellview Community Cemetery, Murphy, NC. Military
Graveside
rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #10222, Joe Miller Elkin
American Legion
Post #96, and D.A.V. Chapter #73.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Oliver, Chad Berry, Dewayne Townson,
Keith
Berry, Travis Chastain, Steve Oliver and Sam Gentry.

Mr.
Winston L. Cook, age 78, a lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia,
passed
away Saturday, July 10, 1999 in DeKalb Medical Center in Decatur,
Georgia.
Mr.
Cook was born in Union County, Georgia, on Tuesday, August 3, 1920, a
son of
the late Clarence Vernon Cook, and Bertha Davenport Cook.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served
during WW II. He was a retired chemical
manufacturing foreman. Mr. Cook was a
member of Confidence Methodist Church.
Surviving
are his wife, Margaret Donaldson Cook of Blairsville; daughter,
Charlotte Cook,
of Swanee, Georgia; son and daughter in law, Michael and Debbie Cook,
of
Blairsville; sister, Anna Fay Cook, of Blairsville; grandchildren, Jody
Cook,
Larua Stanley, Jamy Cook and Jason Cook all of Blairsville; and
Samantha Lance
of Swanee; great grandchildren: Jessica, Jacob, and Kalen Cook and
Colton and
Kyndal Stanley; nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.
Funeral
services were held Monday, July 12, 1999 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Charles Black and Rev. John
Strickland
officiating. Special music was presented
by The Faith Singers. The following
gentlemen served as pallbearers: Edward Breedlove, Clifford Chastain,
Stanley
Odom, Bob Odom, Tim Odom, and J.C. Odom.
Interment was in Confidence Methodist Church Cemetery with

military honors presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.

Mr.
Charlie Wimpey, age 84, a lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia,
passed
away Friday, July 9, 1999 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr.
Wimpey was born in Union County, Georgia, on Saturday, October 3, 1914
a son of
the late John Wimpey and Nettie Duckworth Wimpey. He
was a retired cattle farmer. Mr. Wimpey
was a member of First Baptist
Church of Blairsville, and was well known for his active role in the
Union
County Historical Society. He had been
preceded in death by his wife, Grapelle Jackson Wimpey in 1998.
Surviving
are daughter and son in law, Jane and Rap Rogers of Dunwoody, Georgia;
sisters:
Ethel Rawlins, of Blairsville, and Ruby Parks of Blue Ridge;
granddaughter and
her husband, Emily and John Vander-Wiele, of Alpharetta, many friend
and other
relatives survive.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, July 11, 1999 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Danny Parris and Rev. B.A.
Buchanan
officiating. Special music was presented
for the service by Mildred and Nelson LeCroy.
The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Rap Rogers, John
Vander-Wiele, Danny Brown, Robbie Brown, Carson Owenby, and Sheldon
Henderson. Serving as honorary escort to
the family were members of Union County Historical Society. Interment was in Union Memory Gardens
Cemetery.

Mr.
Melvin Clayborn Ledford, age 88, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Saturday,
July 10, 1999 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mr.
Ledford was born in Union County, Georgia on Saturday, February 19,
1911, a son
of the late Jesse Ledford and Elizabeth Foster Ledford.
He was a retired farmer, and was a member of
Mt. Zion Baptist church.
Surviving
are his wife, Verdie Beaver Ledford, of
Blairsville;
two sisters: Ora McGiboney, and Velma Osborn, both of Covington,
Georgia;
several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, July 11, 1999 at 4 p.m. from the Chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Loys Waters officiating. Special music was presented by the Faith
Singers. The following gentlemen served

Mrs.
Anne Folk St. John, age 64, of Blairsville, was born in Fulton County,
Georgia,
December 5, 1934. Anne passed away in
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, July 6, 1999.
The much beloved daughter of Sgt. Thomas
Franklin St.
John and the Georgia Author Wylly Folk St. John.
Survivors
include three children: Rebecca Anne St. John of Blairsville, GA,
Jennifer Dyer
Davis, of Newberry, Florida, and Charles St. John Dyer of Social
Circle,
Georgia; grandchildren: Shelley Anne Strickland, Pensacola and
Blairsville,
mark Mikellah Davis, Pensacola, FLA., Mariah McKenzie Dove Davis,
Blairsville,
GA., Amanda Anne Davis, James Lockhart Davis III, Newberry, FLA.,
Joshua St.
John Dyer, Jared Clyde Dyer, Social Circle, GA; three great
grandchildren:
Joshua Robert Strickland, Pensacola, Noah St. John Strickland and
Elijiah
Joseph Strickland, Blairsville, special companion: Robert N. Lynch,
Texarkna,
ARK. Anne St. John lead
a varied and interesting life. In the
fifties she taught classes at various business schools in Atlanta,
Oklahoma City
and Pensacola. During the 60’s she has
her own television show and was an Advertising Rep. For
Wear TV in Pensacola. Anne was an avid
reader and loved humor and jokes. During
the 70’s she became a Clu and retired from
United
Family Life Insurance, Atlanta. In the
80’s she worked insurance with the Woodmen of the World in North
Georgia. During the last few years she
traveled
extensively, writing and chronically life in the south and south east. Anne was an artist of all different mediums
to include, but not limited to: Oils, acrylics and Materials. She took her love of sewing and transferred
it to beautiful quilted wall hangings and quilts.
Anne
St. John’s former husbands include: William Ira Smith of the Greater
Atlanta
Area, Charles H. Dyer, Pensacola, FLA and Neil D. Pratt.
Anne’s eyes were donated to the Georgia Eye
Bank. A sunset Memorial service was held
at the Social Circle United Methodist Church at a later date. In lieu
of
flowers the family respectfully request that donations be made in Anne
Folk St.
john’s name to the American Cancer Society Chapter of your choice.

Mr.
James Harry Totherow, age 72, of Horseshoe Cove Road, Blairsville,
passed away
on Sunday, July 4, 1999 at his home.
Mr.
Totherow was born on April 16, 1927, a son of the late Harry Totherow
and Earie
Ethel Totherow. He was a lifelong
resident of Union County and was of the Baptist Faith.
Mr. Totherow was preceded in death by his
wife, Geraldine Totherow, and a son, Edward Totherow.
Surviving are his
mother, Mrs. Earie Davis Mason of Blairsville; two sisters, Rozene
Barnes of
Hampton, GA, and Betty Pickesimer of Murphy, NC; two brothers, Lawrence
Totherow of Mableton, GA, and Donald Totherow of Dahlonega, GA; many
other
relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services for Mr. Totherow were held on Tuesday, July 6, 1999 at 2:00
p.m. from
the chapel of the Mountain View Funeral Home in Blairsville, with the
Rev.
Horace Potts officiating. Special music
was presented by Kenneth and Elaine Young.

Mrs.
Frances Irene Hughes Sosebee, age 65, a native and lifelong resident of
Blairsville, Georgia passed away Saturday, July 10, 1999 in Union
General
Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs.
Sosebee was born in Union County, Georgia on Tuesday, November 14,
1933, a
daughter of the late Paxton Lee Hughes and Imogene Kelley Hughes. She was a homemaker and a member of Bray
Methodist church. Mrs. Sosebee had been
preceded in death by her husband, James Clarence Sosebee, in 1985.
Surviving
are daughter and son in law: Marcia and Kevin Chick, of Big Canoe, GA;
daughter, Cynthia Sosebee, of Blairsville, son and daughter in law:
Gary and
Virginia Sosebee, of Blairsville; brothers: Johnny and Tommy Hughes of
Blairsville; sister, Linda Cagle, of Mesa, Ariozona, grandchildren,
Jaime
Couch, of Blue Ridge, and Tyler and Trent Sosebee both of Blairsville. Many friends and other relatives also
survive.

Mrs.
Lucille Sparks Young, age 81, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Friday, June
25, 1999 at Union General Hospital.
Mrs.
Young was born in Union County, December 1, 1917, a daughter of James
Gracen
and Annie Belle Curtis Sparks. She had
retired from the shoe factory. Mrs.
Young was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Young in 1975
and a son,
Jimmie Lane Young in 1938.
Surviving
are son and daughter in law, Kennith and Elaine Young of Blairsville,
and
daughter and son in law, Barbara and Richard Long of Blairsville, two
grandchildren, Abby King and James Long and two great grandchildren,
Alexandra
and Ashton, all of Blairsville also survive.
Funeral
services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 27th from the
Liberty
Baptist Church with Rev. Brent Chatham and Rev. Guy Bradley officiating. Music was provided by Gloria Griggs, Ken and

Mr.
Joseph Mitchel White, age 86, of Blairsville, passed away on Thursday,
July 1,
1999 in the Clay County Care Center in Hayesville, NC, following an
extended
illness.
Mr.
White was born on December 12, 1912 in Savannah, TN, the son of the
late Joseph
Mitchel White and the late Nelie Breckenridge White.
He was a former resident of Chattanooga,
TN. He was a veteran of WWII and was
retired from the United State Postal Service Mr. White was a member of
the
First Centenary Methodist Church. Mr.
White was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Spencer White in
1986, and a
step-son, A.C. Decosta, III.
Surviving
are one daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Dr. Richard Putnam of
Blairsville;
three grandchildren Joe Putnam of Charleston, SC, Jason Putnam of
Blairsville,
and Joe Decosta of Asheville, NC; many other relatives and friends also
survive.
The
family met with friends at the Wann Funeral Home in Chattanooga on
Saturday,
July 3, 1999. Graveside services
followed at 4:00 p.m. at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.
