james dillard townsend

 

Mr. James Dillard Townsend, age 93, of Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Townsend was born on June 17, 1909 in Union Co., the son of the late James Andrew Townsend and the late Mary Lou Hood Townsend.  Mr. Townsend was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by two sons and two daughters, Gwendolen Townsend, Herbert Townsend, Barbara Dalton, and Wayne Townsend, and by his first wife, Carrie E. Reece Townsend.  Mr. Townsend was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving  Mr. Townsend are his wife, Mona E. Townsend of Suches, two daughters and son in laws, Katie and Curtis Cooper of Blairsville, Maxine and Lewie Hughes of Young Harris, two sons and daughter in laws, Claxton and Nancy Townsend of Blairsville, Denny and Terri Townsend of Woodstock, six sisters, Bessie Sexton, Sara Roberts, Betty Orr, Margie Butt, Jeanette Vest, and Grappelle Thompson, three brothers, Tomm, Odell and Robert Townsend, twenty three grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday July 12, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Willis Garrett officiating.  Special music was presented by Charles Styles, Ed Mashburn, Ken Young, Sarah Kelley, John, Clayton and Cranford Nix.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, James and Dustin Townsend, Richard and Tim Sullivan, Michael Whitmire, and Mickey Ensley.  Honorary pallbearers were Dwayne Townsend, Michael Ensley, Matthew Youngblood and Justin Moode.  Interment followed in the Chostoe Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Bernard F. McManus passed away in Atlanta, Georgia on July 4, 2002.  Mr. McManus was a 15 year resident of Blairsville, a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and a World War II Veteran.

He is survived by his son Dennis McManus of Clearwater, Florida, daughter-in-law Terri McManus, and 2 grandsons; and his daughter Mray McManus Yount of Douglasville, Georgia, son-in-law Steve Yount, two grandsons, and a great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville on July 27 at 9:00 a.m.

homer allen barnes

 

Mr. Homer Allen Barnes, age 87, of Gum Log Rd., Blairsville passed away on Sunday July 14, 2002 in the Union Co. Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Barnes was born on Jan. 2, 1915 in Union Co. the son of the late C.R. Barnes and the late Lura Lequire Barnes.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union Co., and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was preceded in death by a son, Kelley H. Barnes in 1942 and by his wife, Minnie Maybelle Barnes in 2002.  Mr. Barnes was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Barnes are four daughters and son in laws; Betty and Edward Sexton, Lucille and Johnny Martin, Revonda and Roy Phillips, Vivian and Ervin Martin; one son and daughter in law, Vernon and Rachel Barnes, all of Blairsville; five brothers, Dillard Barnes of Bryson City, NC, Gilmer Barnes of Travelers Rest, NC, Baxter Barnes of Rutherford, NC, Dexter Barnes of Waynesville, NC, and Max Barnes of Mint Hill, NC; ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday July 16, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Horace Potts and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by Jimmy and Johnny Hogsed.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Clifton, Byron, Hoyt, Marvin, Andy and Chris Barnes.  Interment followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
