                Mrs. Marilynn Jean Houck age 91 of Rocky Circle Blairsville passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 7, 2013 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Houck was born on March 31, 1922 in Morenci, MI, the daughter of the late Harley Goodyear and the late Lela Henniger Goodyear. Marilynn loved to sew, cook and go bowling. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Forrest William "Bill" Houck in 2011 and a daughter, Sue Walters in 1995 and also by a sister, Mary Warren. Mrs. Houck was of the Presbyterian faith.

            Surviving Mrs. Houck are one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Joan Houck of Waxhaw, SC, one daughter, Jan Hall of Charlotte, NC, one sister, Betty Smith of Mount Gretna, PA, eight grandchildren, Missy, Debbie, Beckie, Chris, Pat, Terry, Jeff and Laurie, twenty-one great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            A memorial service was held on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from the Mountain View Chapel with the Minister Terry Stuart officiating. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Union County Nursing Home Activities Fund in memory of Mrs. Houck.

violetta g. godwin

 

                Mrs. Violetta G. Godwin, age 83, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, following a period of declining health.

            Mrs. Godwin was born in Mouston, WI, on February 3, 1930, a daughter of the late Lewis M. Green and the late Vesta MacFarland Green. She and her husband Maylon moved to Blairsville in 1994 from Stuart, FL. Maylon passed away three years later. Two of her brothers, Billy K. Green and Gilbert Green, also preceded her in death. Violetta was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, and had been a member of "The Way" Women's Sunday School Class there.

            Mrs. Godwin leaves behind her loving family: son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Kathy Godwin, of Blairsville; grandson Mark Alan Godwin and his fiancee Andrea Peterman; and granddaughter, Kacie Nicole Godwin. Many other friends and extended family members also survive.

            Funeral services for Mrs. Godwin were held Thursday, July 11, 2013, at 2 p.m., at the Rock Chapel of First Baptist Church, with Rev. Danny Parris officiating. Special music was presented by Mrs. Jackie Hill and Eric Purser.  Serving as pallbearers were grandson, Mark, granddaughter, Kacie, Eric Dills, and Phillip Abernathy.  Members of "The Way" Women's Sunday School Class served as honorary escort to the family, burial in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family met with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday night, July 10, 2013, between the hours of 6 until 9 p.m.

james a. driskell

 

                Mr. James A. Driskell, age 88, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.           

            Mr. Driskell was born in Atlanta, on May 30, 1925, a son of the late James C. Driskell and the late Bertha L. Garmon Driskell. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force, attaining the rank of Captain, and served his country proudly during World War II. Mr. Driskell was of the Methodist faith, and was a member of the Masons, the National Rifle Association, and the Lions Club. James had been a firefighter with the Fulton County Fire Department, and later was an insurance agent. His wife Jane passed away in 1990, and a grandchild, Taylor Rainey, also passed away in 2007. Mr. Driskell lived in Powder Springs, GA, and later moved to the Blairsville area in 1995.

            James will be missed by all who knew him, and will be especially missed by his loving family members: Companion, Dorothy Ridling; daughter, Janet D. Langston, of Cartersville, GA; daughter, Linda Sheridan, of Springhill, TN; son and daughter-in-law, James "Jim" Driskell, and wife Betty, of Maylene, AL; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Denise Driskell, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl Rainey and her husband, Robbie of Canton, GA; eleven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren also survive.

            Funeral services for Mr. Driskell were held on Friday, July 12, 2013, at 10 a.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Mike Hardy officiating. The family selected the following gentlemen to serve as pallbearers: Morgan Driskell, Bill Driskell, Michael Driskell, Robbie Rainey, Jim Driskell, and Paul Bowlin. Burial was in Powder Springs Memorial Garden in Powder Springs, GA, on Friday, July 12, 2013, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Doug Smith officiating at graveside. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Thursday evening, July 11, 2013, between the hours of 6 until 8 p.m.

norman blake hollinshead, jr.

 

            Norman Blake Hollinshead, Jr. (age 87) of Williston, FL, originally of Beach Haven, MJ, and Blairsville, GA, passed away and the Lord took him to Heaven on Saturday, July 6, 2013.

            Norman was born in Oaklyn, NJ and was married to Carol Wernik Hollinshead on May 15, 1954, enjoying almost 60 years of marriage.  Norman was in service to the US Army during WWII and the Korean War, and an expert electrician by trade for the remainder of his life.  He was an avid fisherman and boater throughout his life.  Norman and his wife, Carol, worship at Williston Church of God and have done so for 17 years.  They have worshipped their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ for the bulk of their 60 years together.

            Norman is survived by two sons, Norman Blake, III and Christian, and two daughters, Dale Ruiz and Lauri Lingerfelt, as well as 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

            A Memorial Service was held at Williston Church of God, 850 SW 7th Street,  Williston, FL 32696, on Saturday, July 13, 2013 beginning at 10 a.m.
