donald methvin holcombe

 

Donald Methvin Holcombe, age 64, of Blairsville, GA passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at his home after an extended illness.

A native of Floyd County, Donald was born December 17, 1937, son of Martha Lucile Holcombe and the late W.C. “Buddy” Holcombe.  He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 until 1962 and retired from GE Medical Systems after 12 years of service.  Donald spent most of his life in Rome and once retired, made his home in Blairsville.  A member of Pisgah Baptist Church and the Coosa Lodge #622 F&AM.  Donald was an avid biker and hiker and loved the outdoors.  Prior to his illness, he was active in the Coosa Valley Cycle Association.  His granddaughter Meagan says there is nothing her Papa can’t fix.  His family and friends knew him as Don, and he will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores Ruiz Holcombe, Blairsville; mother, Martha Lucile Holcombe, Rome; sister, Elizabeth Joann Lachney, Woodstock; son, Eric Ruiz Holcombe of Atlanta and daughters Valerie Holcombe Hancock of Rome and Sonya Holcombe Brooks of Bogart; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Books, Ryan Holcombe, and Meagan Brooks, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm Saturday, July 27th at the Thomas B. Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with the Reverend Carl Alexander officiating.  Entombment followed in the Oaknoll memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Daniel’s Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements for Mr. Donald Methvin Holcombe.

mr. andrew earl ellis

 

Mr. Andrew Earl Ellis, age 40, of Gibbs Road, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2002 from injuries received in an automobile accident.  Mr. Ellis was born on April 6, 1962, the son of John L. Ellis and Andrea F. Berry Ellis.  Mr. Ellis was employed at Subway in Blairsville at the time of his death.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at 11 am from the Old Blairsville Cemetery with the Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.

carol adeline hollis warren

 

Mrs. Carol Adeline Hollis Warren, age 65, of Bunker Hill Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Monday July 22, 2002 in Rome, GA, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Warren was born on Nov. 27, 1936 in Harris Co, GA, the daughter of the late Billy Hollis and the late Lottie Gooler Hollis.  Mrs. Warren was a member of the Philidelphia Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Warren are her loving husband of forty four years, Eugene Warren of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bobby Warren of Austelle, GA, Phillip and Sandy Warren of Silver Creek’ one brother, Albert Hollis of Eatanon, GA; two sisters, Francis Rogers of Lithia Springs and Linda Oneil of Harris Co.; two grandchildren, Jason and Brittney Warren; one great grandchild, Dilon; and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday July 25, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Worth Chastain and Rev. Willis Garrett officiating.  Special music was presented by Dorothy Pickelsimer and Carolyn Gibbs.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Junior Warren, J.M. Grizzle, Terry Warren, Larry Rogers, Vernon Patterson and Anthony Warren.  Interment followed in the Philidelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. oscar lee henderson

 

Mr. Oscar Lee Henderson, age 78, of Blairsville, GA passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002 from injuries received from an automobile accident.

Oscar was born in the Gum Log District of Union County, GA on July 5, 1924, the son of James Arthur and Inkabo Grant Henderson.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served during World War II in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.  Oscar was a native and lifelong resident of Union County with the exception of his military service and 11 years spent working at Gippy Plantation Dairy in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.  He was a school bus driver for 15 years and a dump truck driver for 18 years.  Oscar was an avid Raccoon hunter and enjoyed experimenting with various breeds of hunting dogs.  He enjoyed anything that could be done on a tractor and always had a large garden.  He was a member of Revival Baptist Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Susie Mae Hood Henderson; daughter, Helen Sparks; son and daughter-in-law, Sheldon and Nelle Henderson; grandson, Davy Henderson; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jamey and Terrie Sparks; and great-granddaughter, Chelsea Sparks, all of Blairsville.  Also surviving are one brother, Wayne Henderson of Blairsville; and two sisters, Ruby Martin of Ducktown, TN, and Pauline Young of Blairsville; along with a large, extended family.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 26, 2002 at 2 pm from Revival Baptist Church with Pastor Shannon Ketchens officiating.  Special music was presented by soloist, Moe Weaver, and pianist, Amy Bowles.  The following nephews and friends served as pallbearers: Arbie Evans, Larry Henderson, Tim Henderson, Bart Hood, Marty Hood, Arthur Jordan, Hal Phillips, and Carroll Williamson.  The following nephews served as honorary pallbearers: Austin Evans, Leon Henderson, Louis Henderson, Tony Henderson, Donald Jordan, Ronnie Jordan, Tony Jordan, James Martin, Troy Phillips, John Rowell, and Gary Young.  Interment followed the service in the church cemetery.

mary belle atkins

 

Miss Mary Belle Atkins, age 79, native and lifelong resident of Union County, Georgia, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Miss Atkins was born in Union County on Thursday, December 7, 1922, a daughter of the late Howard Christopher Atkins and Dessie Brackett Atkins.  Other than her parents, Miss Atkins had also been preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Latham; an infant brother, William R. Atkins; and a brother-in-law, Manley P. Hamby, Jr.

Survivors include her sister, Almarie Hamby; sister and brother-in-law, Anna M. and Jack Martin; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Elizabeth Atkins, all of Blairsville; many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at 7:00 pm, from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. David Atkins officiating.   Special music will be presented by soloist Cheryl Williams and pianist Elizabeth Smith.  Interment will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 11 a.m., from Providence Methodist Church Cemetery.  Visitation at the funeral home will be held from 5 until 7 p.m., on Tuesday evening, July 30, 2002.

Mrs.  Mary Elaine Towns Conley, age 45, of Seabolt Road, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Conley was born on August 14, 1956 in Marietta, GA, the daughter of the late John Ralph Towns and Jane Castelle Towns.  She was a member of the Pine Top Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Conley are her loving husband of twenty eight years, Terry Conley of Blairsville; one son, Terry Allen Conley of Blairsville; two daughters, Christian Michelle Kunz of Dallas, GA, Rachel Elaine Conley of Blairsville; mother, Jane Merritt, adoptive father, Harold Merritt, both of Powder Springs, GA; one brother, Larry Towns of Powder Springs, GA; two sisters, Kathy Newton of Alburn, GA, Sherrie McDaniel of Maine; one grandchild, Elizabeth Kunz of Dallas, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at 11 am from the Pine Top Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Tanner officiating.  Special music was presented by the Castelle family.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Brian Webber, Dean Self, Marcus Newton, Mike Cinquemano, Ronnie Smith and Larry Conley.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

james gerard dunn

 

Mr. James Gerard Dunn, age 80, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Dunn was born in Kings County, New York, on Sunday, November 6, 1921, a son of the late James Joseph Dunn and Gladys A. Hill Dunn.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II.  He had lived in Blairsville for 12 years, moving here from Florida.  Mr. Dunn was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville, and also was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus.  Other than his parents, he had been preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Dunn, in 1999, and a son, James Terrence Dunn, also in 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Dunn, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and James Larsen, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Clifford and Kathleen Dunn, of Albany, New York; grandchildren: Shannon Larsen, of Blairsville; Wyatt Dunn, Rhiannon Dunn, Zachery Dunn, and Ailinn Dunn, all of Albany, New York; niece, Denise Dunn Wong, of Michigan; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

james gerard dunn

 

Mr. James Gerard Dunn, age 80, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2002, at his home.

Memorial services are scheduled for Monday, August 12, 2002, at 11 a.m., from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Father Wise officiating.

The family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of the Library.  Please contact Union County Public Library for the information.
