Mildred Elizabeth Carr, 84, of Floral City, FL and Blairsville, GA died Sunday, July 10, 2005 in Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, FL.  A native of Glencoe, Minnesota, she was born September 22, 1920 to Hans P. and Elizabeth Fuglsang.

Surviving Mrs. Carr had her own catering business and was a member of the American Cancer Society and Beta Signa Phi Sorority.  She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Inverness, FL and St. Francis of Assisi Parish I Blairsville and was active in the Catholic Women’s Club.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Ralph Carr, of Floral City, FL, and Blairsville, GA; a son and wife, Terry and Honey Carr, of Cooper City, FL; a sister, Gloria Koop, of Denver, Colorado; and three grandchildren, Jeremy, Crystal, and Casey Carr.

Services were held in Inverness, FL on July 13, 2005 for Florida family land friends.  Services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Blairsville at 10 a.m. on August 5, 2005 with burial at St. Francis of Assisi—St. Clares Haven (Columbarium).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society c/o Sue Upchurch, 3433 Mulky Gap Road, Blairsville, GA 30512.

mr. gus thomas, jr.

 

Mr. Gus Thomas, Jr., age 69, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at North East Georgia Medical Center.  Junior was born Friday, January 3, 1936 in Union County to the late Gus and Dollie Mae (Stephens) Thomas.  He was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church, and was a lifelong resident of Blairsville.  Junior was preceded in death by his wife, Bonita Bridges Thomas in 2003.

Survivors include: son & daughter-in-law, Larry and Kim Thomas of Blairsville, GA, daughter, Teresa Dyer of Blairsville, GA, a special friend, Henry Shaw, of Brasstown, NC, sister, Viola Vandiver of Blairsville, GA, sister, Leona Harkins of Dahlonega, GA, sister, Norene Stover of Blairsville, GA, sister, Edna Hughes of Blairsville, GA, sister, Pauline Sosebee of Blairsville, GA, brother, Harold Thomas of Blairsville, GA, granddaughter, Erin Thomas of Blairsville, GA, granddaughter, Kahli Thomas of Blairsville, GA, grandson, Ethan Thomas of Blairsville, GA, granddaughter, Kacye Young of Blairsville, GA, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 29, 2005 at 2 PM from the Zebulon Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Jenkins and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Music was provided by Scott Lance and the Kelley Trio.  Interment was in Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Robert Bridges, Jody Bridges, Leonard Sosebee, Junior Bridges, Harold Berry, Josh Berry.  Honorary pallbearers were Alan Bridges, Bill Dyer, Johnny Barnes, David Chatham, Neil Rusk, Kenneth Cook, Richard Coker.

mrs. minnie lee ownbey

 

Mrs. Minnie Lee Ownbey, age 75, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2005 in Gainesville, GA.  Mrs. Ownbey was born Monday, November 4, 1929 in Union County GA to the late David B. Cordell and the late Altha Beavers Cordell.  She was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ownbey, and a brother, William David Cordell.

Survivors include: son & daughter-in-law, Roger G. & Nita B. Ownbey of Comer, GA, daughter & son-in-law, Karen O. & James D. Jackson, MD of Gainesville, GA, sister & brother in law, Nita & Kenneth Foster of Blairsville, grandson, John Chadwick Ownbey, grandson, Brandon Kyle Ownbey, granddaughter, Darby McKinley Jackson, grandson, Lewis Braselton Jackson, grandson, James William Jackson; several nieces & nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 30, 2005 at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Guy Wayne Shook and Rev. Tommy Seay  officiating.  Music was provided by Martha Davenport.  Pallbearers were Tim Odom, Steven Foster, David Foster, Chad Ownbey, Brandon Ownbey and Chris Fox.  Honorary pallbearer was Kyle Odom.  Interment was in Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery.

mrs. thelma cecelia markuson

 

Mrs. Thelma Cecelia Markuson age 97 of Stonehenge Drive, Blairsville passed away on Thursday July 28, 2005 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Markuson was born on February 18, 1908 in Fairbury, NE, the daughter of the late Chris Hickey and the late Fern Thompson Hickey.  She was preceded in death by her husband, martin Markuson in 2000 and by a daughter Mavis Kamper.  Mrs. Markuson was a member of the Unity Church in Vero Beach, FL.

Surviving Mrs. Markuson are six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, the Michael Cushman family of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held from the Boynton Memorial Chapel in Boynton Beach, FL with entombment to follow in the Boca Raton memorial Cemetery in Boca Raton, FL.

mr. edgar lee duckworth

 

Mr. Edgar Lee Duckworth, age 51, of Fairview Trail, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2005 in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.  Mr. Duckworth was born on October 9, 1952 in Union County, the son of the late Ralph Duckworth and the late Dimple Jones Duckworth.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by two sons, Eddie Lee Duckworth and David Michael Thomas.  Mr. Duckworth was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving Mr. Duckworth are his loving wife of thirty two years, Faye Thomas Duckworth of Blairsville, two sisters, Vessie Caraballo and Kathy Burrell both of Cartersville, GA, Five brothers, Roy Duckworth of FL, Tommy Duckworth, Robert Duckworth, Gordon Duckworth and Jerry Duckworth all of Blairsville, Nephew, Tommy Duckworth of Blairsville. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at 4 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Special music was presented by the Traveling Pilgrims.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Matthew Thomas, Lazro Aguilar, Thomas Duckworth Jr., Manuel Arteaga, Cody Hughes and Tom Harvey.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Jesus Arteaga, Don Peel and Israel Arteaga.  Interment followed in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

mr. harry douglas mcgahie, jr.

 

Mr. Harry Douglas McGahie, Jr., age 78 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2005 at his home.

Mr. McGahie, was born Monday, March 21, 1927 in Port Chester, NY to the late Harry D. and Frances (Brieman) McGahie.  He was a WWII US Army veteran.  Mr. McGahie worked for many years as a machinist and moved to this area in 1990.

Survivors include: his wife, Carrie Jo (Duckworth) McGahie of Blairsville, GA, daughter, Jennifer Ayers of Bethlehem, CT, son, Paul McGahie of Goshen, AL, w grandchildren Desiree and Hannah.

Graveside services were held on Monday, August 1, 2005 at 2 p.m. from Union Memory Gardens with Rev. Tony Abbott officiating.
