Mr. Homer
Gene Nix
age 84 passed away peacefully on Monday July 26, 2010 in the Union
General
Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Nix was born on April 18, 1926 in Union County, the son of
the late
William Hamilton Nix and the late Fannie Townsend Nix.
Homer was a veteran of the US Army of
WWII. He was a brick mason by trade for
most of his life. He was a member of the
VFW and Past Commander of the American Legion.
Homer was a sixty year member and Past Master of the Allegheny
Lodge
#114 F&AM where he was very active holding many other offices. Homer served as DDGM for five years in the
Grand Lodge of Georgia. He was a member
of the YAARB Temple and also the Appalachian Shrine Club, Past Patron
of the
Eastern Star OES #314, and a York Rite Mason.
Mr. Nix was a member and Lay Leader of Shady Grove United
Methodist Church.
Surviving
Mr. Nix
are his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Catherine Tipton Nix of
Blairsville,
one daughter, Linda Benge of Blairsville, one son and daughter-in-law,
Bill and
Pam Nix of Canton, GA, daughter-in-law, Eileen Nix of Cumming, GA,
three sisters
and one brother-in-law, Ruby Jewell Lance, Charlotte and Garnett
Collins, Mary
Lou Whitt all of Blairsville, three brothers and two sister-in-laws,
John and
Susie Nix, Clayton and Vernell Nix all of Blairsville and Cranford Nix
of MI,
four grandchildren, Lisa Soares, Felicia Woolwine, Cassandra Lingerfelt
and
Hilary Nix, six great grandchildren, Brandon and Caleb Patterson, Will
Woolwine, Kaleigh and Kyle Lingerfelt and Greyson Soares, several
nieces,
nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were
held on Thursday July 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the Mountain View Chapel
with
the Rev. Bob Bone and Rev. Jan Devereaux officiating. Special music
presented
by Cheryl Williams and Elizabeth Smith. The following gentleman served
as
pallbearers: Rodney Moose, Clay McConnell, Brad McConnell, Richard
Corn,
Brandon Patterson, Wade Smith, Gollie Easter and Johnny Garmon. Interment followed in the Shady Grove
Methodist Church Cemetery with the North GA Honor Guard conducting
military honors
and the Allegheny Lodge #114 conducting Masonic Rites. The family met
with
friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family
requests that donations may be made to the Shady Grove Cemetery Fund in
memory
of Mr. Nix.

Mr.
William Marvin
Murray Jr. age 93 of Chatham Drive, Blairsville, formerly of Charlotte,
NC and
Atlanta, GA, passed away peacefully on Monday July 26, 2010 in the
Union County
Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mr.
Murray was born on Feb. 2, 1917 in Holly
Hill, SC, the son of the late William Marvin Murray Sr. and the late
Effie
Olivia Murray. He retired as Vice
President of Field Auditing for Life of Georgia with over thirty years
of
service. He was a member of the
Blairsville Lions Club and a member of Young Cane Masonic Lodge #597
F&AM
where he just received his fifty year pin. He
was preceded in death by six brothers and
sisters. Mr. Murray was a member of the
First Baptist Church of Blairsville.
Surviving
Mr. Murray
are his loving wife of seventy years, Byrdie Murray of Blairsville, one
son and
daughter-in-law, Bill and Miriam Murray of Blairsville, one brother,
Charles
Murray of SC, two sisters, Jeannette Clark and Caroline Shuler of SC,
three
grandchildren, Beth and Bruce Boylen of Atlanta, Jeff and Robin Murray
of
Atlanta, Jim and Marla Watson of Atlanta, several nieces, nephews, many
other
relatives and friends also survive.
A
memorial service
will be held on Wednesday July 28, 2010 at 3:30 pm at the Mountain View
Chapel
with the Rev. Danny Parris and Rev. Roy Bateman officiating. In lieu of
flowers
if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the
Union County
Nursing Home activities fund in Mr. Murray’s memory. The family met
with
friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3-3:30 p.m.

Mrs.
Betty Asdell Shank age 63 of Kimbrell Lane, Blairsville, formerly of
Port
Charlotte, FL, Falling Waters WV and
also of Hancock, MD passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 28, 2010
at her
home following an extended illness. Mrs.
Shank was born on June 12,1947 in Annapolis, MD, the daughter of the
late Guy
Taylor and the late Florence Peeling Taylor. She
had been employed with Verizon Telephone
Company for over twenty-eight years. Betty
had been volunteering for several organizations for over thirty years. The most recent was for the Union County
Auxiliary, the S.A.F.E. House, Union County Animal Thrift Store and the
Blairsville Cancer Center. Betty was a
member of the Fellowship of the Hills Church.
Surviving
Mrs. Shank are her loving husband, Ronald Shank of Blairsville, two
daughters
and sons-in-law, Mary and Gordon Crouch of Woodstock, GA, Annette and
Garth
Munroe of Arnold, MD, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Donald and
Corrine
Peeling of Leonardtown, MD, Kenneth Taylor of Baltimore, MD, five
grandchildren, Ryan and Brandon Crouch, Danielle and Jenna Bellante and
Trinity
Munroe, many other family and friends also survive.
A
memorial service will be held Sunday Aug.15, 2010 at 2 p.m. from the
Fellowship
of the Hills Church with the Rev. Martin Duncan. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family
requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in
memory of
Mrs. Shank.

Mrs.
Jennie C.
Traina age 92 passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 27, 2010 in the
Union
County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs.
Traina was born on Feb.5, 1918 in Tampa,
FL, the daughter of the late Vincent Centinaro and the late Maria
Perrone
Centinaro. Jennie was a loving mother,
grandmother, great grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who
knew her. She was preceded in death by her
husband, John
G. Traina in 2003, four brothers, Norman, Jimmy, Jasper and Joe and
also four
sisters, Annie, Mary, Katie and Concha. Mrs.
Traina was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving
Mrs.
Traina are two daughters and son-in-laws, Linda and Dennis Lopez of
Blairsville, Rose Ann and Bob Buning of Homosassa Springs, FL, three
grandchildren, J. J. and Dan Walts, Denny Lopez and David Buning, two
great
grandchildren, BeBe Walts and Jake Walts, several nieces, nephews, many
other
relatives and friends also survive.
A
memorial service will be held at a later in Tampa, FL. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family
requests that memorials may be made to a Special Olympics of your
choice in
memory of Mrs. Traina.

Thomas
"Jeff" Mason, age 65, of Loganville, Georgia, formerly of
Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, July 30, 2010 at his
residence.
Jeff
was
born May 29, 1945 in Blairsville, to the late Charles and Mary Jordan
Mason. He was a member of Corinth Baptist
Church in
Loganville, and Future Farmers of America. He
was preceded in death by brother, George L.
Mason.
Surviving
family members include: daughter and son-in-law, Jodie and Dick Schmidt
of
Madison, Georgia, daughter & son-in-law, Jan and Scott Steinbarger
of
Everett, Washington, brothers: Charles Everett Mason, Robert Mason,
Ronald P.
Mason and Charles Jordan Mason; sisters: Flossie Leah Stebbins,
Patricia
Ahnawake Bowen, Austell Woody, Frankie Swanson and Nina Owenby all of
Georgia,
granddaughter, Aubrey Janousek, grandsons, Jordan Janousek and Luke
Steinbarger, great-grandson, Aiden Gabriel Montgomery.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services were held Monday, August 2, 2010 at 11 A.M. from the Cochran
Funeral
Home Chapel with Max Suther, Alan Goins, Dale Kinnersley, and Wofford
Kelley
officiating. Special music was presented
by Sarah Kelley, Jim Kinnersley, Roger Kephart, and Ahnawake Bowen. “Amazing Grace” was sung by Melanie
Striebich, Valerie and Pam Owenby, as everyone exited the Chapel. Interment was in Providence Methodist Church
Cemetery, with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Jordan
Janousek,
Preston Mason Butch Nazer, Tim Bowen, Lenny Freeman, Steve Owenby, and
Donnie
Mason.
The
family received friends Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 4-6 P.M. at the
funeral
home.

Mrs.
Eula Lee Spence, age 63 of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday,
July
28, 2010 at her residence.
Eula
was
born Monday, January 6, 1947 in Blairsville, to the late Emory and the
late Bonnie
Chambers Harkins. She was a member of
Choestoe Baptist Church and The Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors
include her husband, Robert Douglas Spence, brother, Charles Harkins of
Atlanta;
sister, Sybil Tyre of Blairsville; and several nieces and nephews also
survive.
The
family received friends Monday, August 2, 2010 from 6-8 PM at Cochran
Funeral
Home in Blairsville. Burial was in
Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.
