            Mr. Vernon Doyle Fortenberry, age 97, of Owltown Road, Blairsville passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Union County Nursing Home. Mr. Fortenberry was born May 14, 1915 in Union County, son of the late James W. and Maggie Addington Fortenberry. In his early life he was in the CCC and was also a WWII US Army Veteran and served in Germany where he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Mr. Fortenberry retired from Burlington Textile Mill in Shannon, GA. He was a 50 year member of Shannon Masonic Lodge #100 F&AM. Mr. Fortenberry was preceded in death by his wife Frankie Summerour Fortenberry. He was a member of Coosa United Methodist Church.

            Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, J. W. and Janice Fortenberry of Blairsville, Mitchell Fortenberry of Adairsville, Jimmy and Beverly Fortenberry of Rome and Randy and Sharon Fortenberry of Blairsville, sister, Vonerine Spiva of Calhoun, eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

            Funeral services were held Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Earl Bishop officiating. Pallbearers were Josh Fortenberry, Seth Fortenberry, Chris Fortenberry, Dakota Fortenberry, Chris Harrell and Bryan McWorten. Interment followed in Coosa United Methodist Church Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites provided by Young Cane Masonic Lodge. The family received friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

Mrs. Katie Pearl Carithers age 79 of Lightnin Lane, Blairsville passed away on July 29, 2012 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Carithers was born on February 5, 1933 in Miami, FL, the daughter of the late Thomas Jackson Waters and the late Queen Ellen Busby Waters. Pearl was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved Bluegrass Gospel music and reading. She was a large supporter of Camp Hosanna in Hiawassee. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Theodore Dean Carithers in 1990, two brothers, Johnny and Jackie Waters and a sister, Vera Underhill. Mrs. Carithers was a member of Shining Light Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Carithers are three daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and George Bumpus of Blairsville, Katie and John Herl of Cooper City, FL, Faye and Tony Abbott of Delta, CO, one son, Dean Carithers of Jupiter, FL, one brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Sharon Waters of Cooper City, FL, fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, August 2, at 10 a.m. from the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL with Pastor Tim Mason officiating. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Camp Hosanna,  2201 Pope Rd., Hiawassee, GA 30546 in memory of Mrs. Carithers.

            Mr. James Howard Byers, age 78, of Lovet St., Athens, TN passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012 in Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. James was born June 19, 1934 son of the late Floyd and Dester Shore Byers. He was a loving father, brother and grandfather. His grandchildren were his life and gave him so much joy. James was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Sue Byers, brothers Hansel, Hasson, Harold and Grady Byers.

            Survivors include the mother of his children, Louise Odom Byers of Blairsville, children, Ron Byers of Blairsville, Jan and Johnny Thomas of Blairsville and Lisa and Scott Dial of Indian Harbour Beach, FL, sister, Shirley and Larry Chastain of Kennesaw, GA, brother, Wayne and Maria Byers of Athens, TN, grandchildren, Danny Byers, Christy Byers, Jenna Thomas, Jillian Thomas, Ashley Dial, Chris Dial, Julie Dial Elliott (Matthew), Ryan Dial (Kristin), many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held Thursday, August 2, at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lee Griggs officiating. Interment followed in Confidence United Methodist Church Cemetery. If you wish in lieu of flowers make memorials to Confidence United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund. The family received friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

            Mr. Norman E. Zahn III, age 65, of Blairsville and Indian Harbour Beach, FL passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Union General Hospital. He was born in Brooklyn, NY son of the late Norman E. Sr. and Delores Coyne Zahn, SR. Mr. Zahn was a retired Guidance Counselor with Broward County Elementary School. He had lived here for the past eight years. He loved the Ocean and surfing. Mr. Zahn was a member of the NRA.

            Survivors include his wife, Cheri Zahn of the home, son, Kenneth and his wife Shannon of Summerville, SC, father-in-law, David J. Lynch Sr. and his wife Dot of Pompano Beach, FL, sister, Mary Zahn of Indian Harbour Beach, FL, brother-in-law, David James Lynch, Jr. and his wife Bonnie of Port St. Lucie, FL, grandchildren Aidan Zahn and Benjamin Zahn of Summerville, SC.

            Mr. Roy Merlet Corn, age 94, of Cheryl Lane, Blairsville passed away, Sunday, July 29, 2012 in Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Roy was born February 17, 1918 in Union County, son of the late John C. and Martha Jane Rich Corn. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran and a retired brick mason. Roy loved fishing, running the road, visiting and talking to family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was a generous and loving person and never met a stranger. Roy was a lifetime member of the American Legion and DAV. He was preceded in death by son Roger, brothers Buell, Frank, Robert and sister, Ruby Hooper.  Roy was of the Baptist faith and attended Confidence United Methodist Church.

            Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Edith Rogers Corn of Blairsville; daughters Barbara and Bill Owens of Wadley, AL, Evelyn and Msgt. Ret. Jim Stanford of Blairsville, Sandi and Joe Scerbo of Blairsville, Shelby and David Winbigler of New Port Richey, FL, sisters, Georgia Hooper of Kannapolis, NC, Mattiebelle and Wayne Chappelear of Roswell, GA, Athea and Nelson Pickelsimer of Blairsville, brothers John and Carolyn Corn of Blairsville, GA, Bill and Betty Corn of Blue Ridge, GA, ten grandchildren, Curtis Owens, Richard Owens, John Owens, Deanna Murrel, Msgt. Alan Stanford, Tonya Kraynak, Sharla Dupuis, Elizabeth Butler, Scott Scerbo and Randall Scerbo, seventeen great grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

            Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Earl Bishop, Rev. Larry Truelove and Rev. John Strickland officiating. Music was by John Nix and Angela Holloway. Pallbearers were Roger (Doc) Beavers, Dan Trulove, Dean Everett, Gene Cooley, Mark Cox and Dormas Sullivan. Interment followed in New Harmony Baptist Cemetery.

            In lieu of flowers you may send memorials to the American Heart Association. The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
