Mr. Larry
Nix Harkins, age 66 of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Cumming, GA, passed
away on
Thursday, August 06, 2009 following an extended illness following a
period of
declining health. He was born to the
late General pat and Maver Clarinda (Nix) Harkins on April 30, 1943, in
Houston
County, GA. He was preceded in death by
his son, master Matthew Harkins in 1999 and a brother, Mr. John Harkins
in
2005.
He is
survived by his former wife, Barbara Harkins, of
Sumter, SC; son, Bradley Harkins, of Dunwoody, GA; brothers and
sisters-in-law,
Stanley “Jim” and Leanora Harkins, of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; Gerry and
Dianne
Harkins, of McDonough, GA; sister, Margaret Patterson, of Warrenton,
VA, and a
number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral mass
was held on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 11:30 AM from church of the
good
Shepherd Catholic Church in Cumming, GA, with Father Tony Rigolio and
Father
Alvaro Avendano officiating. A graveside
service was held on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 11:30 AM from St.
Lawrence
Cemetery in Sumter, SC. Interment was in
St. Lawrence Cemetery in Sumter, SC.

Mr.
Norman
A. Simonton, 88, resident of Stonehenge Assisted Living in Blairsville,
formerly of Tucker, GA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4,
2009. Mr. Simonton was born on June 4,
1921 in
Heard County, GA, the son of the late Carl A. and Nola Yates Simonton. He was preceded in death by four sisters,
Ethel Yates, Dura Barr, Novyce Walker and Doris Perdue.
Mr. Simonton was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr.
Simonton are his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia Port Simonton of
Blairsville, son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth W. and Angie Simonton of
Decatur,
GA, daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Barry Varian of Blairsville, son
and
daughter-in-law, Gregg and Sharon Simonton of Baltimore, MD, brother
and
sister-in-law, bobby and Dottie Simonton of Newnan, GA, two
grandchildren,
Megan Marie Carmody of Boone, NC, and Sofia Luz Maris Simonton,
Baltimore,
Md. Many other relatives and friends
also survive.
Mr. Simonton
led a full and fun-filled life. After
graduating from Rabun Gap Junior College in Clayton, GA, and Berry
College in
Rome, GA, he served his country as a pilot in the USAF.
He became an Instructor/Master Pilot for the
B-17 and B-29, captained 22 missions from Saipan to Japan and 3 POW
mercy
missions for American prisoners of war.
After WWII, Mr. Simonton worked, for 40 years, for the Bell
South
Corporation in both Rome and Atlanta and was the president of the Dixie
Chapter
of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Three
hole-in-ones attested to his devotion to golfing. After
retirement, Mr. Simonton crisscrossed
the country, logging over 500,000 miles on his Honda Gold Wing
motorcycle.
A family
memorial service will be held in Atlanta, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made
to the
Caregivers in Building #3 at Stonehenge Assisted Living, 2537 Murphy
Highway,
Blairsville, GA 30512 (Attn.: Jackie Thompson) in Mr. Simonton’s memory.

David
L. Troyer, age 50 of Blairsville, Georgia passed away on Sunday, July
12, 2009
in Ohio. He was born in Canton on May
15, 1959 to Eli B. and Judith A. (Wile) Troyer, graduated form Lake
High
School, and was a carpenter by trade. A
favorite pastime was driving his 1985 Monte Carlo SS.
He is
survived by his son Bobby (Misty) Troyer and grandson
Eli all of GA; parents Bill and Judy Troyer of Uniontown; grandmother
Lois Wile
of Akron; siblings Debbie (Jon) Miller of North Canton, Darrell Troyer
of
Uniontown; and many other relatives and friends. Calling
hours were held Friday, July 17 from
10-12 noon in Hartville Mennonite Church and services began at noon in
the
church with Pastor Ross Miller officiating.
Donations may be made to the family.
A memorial
service will be held on Friday, August 14 at 5 PM at the Senior Center
pavilion
next to North Georgia Technical College.

Mr.
Eugene
Ricky Rollins age 73 of Crescent Rd., Blairsville passed away on
Thursday,
August 6, 2009 at his home following a brief illness.
Mr. Rollins was born on April 2, 1936 in
Cherokee County, GA, the son of the late William and Nora Mae Adams
Rollins. Eugene was a very good
carpenter and enjoyed working and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, brother and
grandfather. He was preceded in death by
two brothers, John and Herbert Rollins and an infant son.
Mr. Rollins was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr.
Rollins are his loving wife of thirty-five years, Gladys Grapelle Brown
Rollins
of Blairsville, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ricky Rollins of
Marietta,
Rex and Sandra Rollins of Woodstock, one daughter and son-in-law, Judy
and
David Nash of Marietta, three step sons and two step daughters-in-law,
Jim and
Jackie Southerland of Marietta, Joe Southerland of Blairsville, Mike
and Audrey
Southerland of Madison, GA, one sister, Mattie Mae of Marietta, one
brother,
Tommy Rollins of Young Harris, nine grandchildren, ten great
grandchildren, many
other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the
Mountain View
Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Abernathy officiating.
Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine
Young. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers, Joe Southerland, Jerry Brown, Timmy Harkins, Chad Platt,
Brian
Martin and Braxton Martin. Interment
followed in the Owltown Church of God Cemetery.
The family met with friends at the funeral home on Friday
evening from 6-8
p.m.

Mr. , Jackie Lynn Kelley Odom, age 44, of
Blairsville, GA,
passed away Friday, August 7, 2009 at Union General Hospital in
Blairsville.
Jackie Lynn
was born in Union County, Georgia on Saturday, July 31, 1965. She was active in Relay For
Life, and enjoyed long days at the beach, hunting and fishing with her
family
and spending time with her grandchildren.
Jackie Lynn was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving
family members include: husband Robbie H. Odom of Blairsville; parents,
Jack
& Betty Plott Kelley of Blairsville; daughter & son-in-law,
Robin Lynn
& Joshua Robert Wilson of Blairsville; son, Robert Levi Odom of
Blairsville; brother & sister-in-law, Phil & Teresa Kelley of
Hiawassee, Georgia; grandchildren, Robert sawyer Wilson, Krislyn
Annette Odom,
and sailor Rayce Wilson. Many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held Monday, August 10, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Seay and Rev. Jeff Young officiating. Music was provided by Lisa Fields and
Charlotte Young. Interment followed in
Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The
following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Michael Plott, Eddie Spiva,
Jason
Young, Ronnie Odom, Michael Thomas and bill Kelley.
The family
received friends at the funeral home from 6 until 9 p.m. Sunday, August
9, 2009
at the funeral home.

Mr. Hugh
M. Hall, Jr., age 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday,
August 4,
2009 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Mr. Hall
was born in Dallas County, Texas, on Saturday,
October 8, 1921, a son of the late Hugh Marshall Hall, Sr., and Helen
Wilson
Hall. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy,
and served in World War II in the Pacific theatre.
Mr. Hall had been a professor at Duke
University, and had resided in Durham, North Carolina.
Surviving
family members include his loving wife of 64 years, Reba Netherland
Heiskell
Hall, of Blairsville; daughter, Kathleen hall, of Blairsville; son,
Hugh
Marshall Hall, III, of Hope, ME; and daughter, Elizabeth hall, of
Decatur, GA.
Memorial
services have not been planned as of this date.
