mr. wilburn ramey

 

Mr. Wilburn Ramey, age 82, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2002 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Ramey was born Tuesday, September 30, 1919 in Banks County, Georgia, son of the late Jordan Ramey and Rena Ellen Burrell Ramey.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served during World War II, in the European Theatre.  Mr. Ramey had lived in Blairsville for 32 years, moving here from Gainesville, Georgia.  He was a retired truck driver and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mary Deyton Ramey, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Larry Stover of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Shannon Gregory, also of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Herbert and Jean Helton of Ferndale, Michigan; son, Max Helton of Taylor, Michigan; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Ramona Helton of Mills, South Carolina; two sisters, Mary Hatcher and Alma Roberts, both of Gainesville, Georgia; and brother, LeRoy Ramey of Gainesville; twenty one grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at 2 pm from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by Michelle Lewis, Judy and Jimmy Thompson, and Goldie Nichols.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tom Swartz, Michael Helton, Rick Lewis, Mark Helton, James McCrite, and Doug Miolen.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery with Rev. Charles Abernathy officiating.

william f. woods

 

Mr. William F. Woods, age 67, of Lance Crossing, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Woods was born on July 8, 1935 in New York NY, the son of the late William F. Woods and the late Katherine Anderson Woods.  Mr. Woods was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.  He was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving Mr. Woods are his loving wife of forty six years, Virginia Talmadge Woods of Blairsville; three daughters and two son-in-laws, Deborah and Dennis Bearer of Pittsburg, PA, Laurie and Larry Wagner of St. Petersburg, FL, Jennifer Bohler of St. Petersburg; one sister, Alice Hoffman of Palm Coast, FL; five grandchildren, Vanessa Wagner, Jaime Taylor, Erin Taylor, Sean Wagner, and Corey Bohler; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, August 10, 2002 at 1 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Paul officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mr. Wood’s memory.

mr. robert “cecil” byers

 

Mr. Robert “Cecil” Byers, age 73, of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life Friday evening, July 26, 2002 at the home of his daughter surrounded by his loving and devoted family.  Mr. Byers was born April 30, 1929, son of the late Lawrence and Lillian (Hyatt) Byers.  He was raised and spent most of his youth in Blairsville, Georgia.  Mr. Byers was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Lamar Byers, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Larkin and Nora Mathis; brothers-in-law, Wade Mathis and John Howard; sister-in-law, Thelma Howard Wimpy.

He was the devoted husband of Ophia (Mathis) Byers of the residence and would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary April 2003; loving father and father-in-law of Brenda Byers Manning and David Manning of Dalton, Floyd and Damaris Byers of Chatsworth, Ronald Byers of Dalton, Steve Byers, Michael and Stacy Byers, all of Cohutta; grandfather of Brandon, Heather, Lacey, Jason, Jonathan, Tyler, Melinda, Allen, Chris, Tasia, Matisha, Caitlyn, Karah and Princess; great grandfather of Michaela Byers; brother-in-law of Wilma Waters of Chatsworth, Wayne Mathis, Junior and Jean Mathis, Barbara and Cofford Stancell, all of Dalton and Helen Mathis of Rome; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 29, 2002 at 12 noon from the Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home with Reverend Chester Edwards, Reverend Troy Foster and Reverend Roy Groce officiating.  Interment followed in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Ed Waters, Gerald Mathis, Tony Bright, Sgt. Brandon Byers, Allen Byers, Chris Byers, Jason Byers and Jonathan Byers.

Charles g. wellborn

 

Charles G. Wellborn, age 77, of Gainesville, FL passed away August 3, 2002.  Born in Blairsville, GA, Mr. Wellborn was a retired UF Professor of Journalism and a U.S. Army Lt. Colonel retired.  He was a WWII Veteran and recipient of 2 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.  He received the Distinguished Professor award several times during his tenure at UF.

Mr. Wellborn is survived by a son, Jim Wellborn of Crystal River, FL and a daughter, Georgia Lynn Britt of Conyers, GA, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

beulah collins thomas

 

Mrs. Beulah Collins Thomas, age 104, of Lemoore, California, formerly of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2002, at her home.

Mrs. Thomas was born June 23, 1898, in Union county, Georgia, to the late Juan Carlton and Nancy Collins.  She was educated at the Blairsville Collegiate Institute, in Blairsville.  She taught school for 6 years before marrying Joseph Jesse Thomas, who died in 1977.  Mrs. Thomas and her husband were poultry farmers in Flowery Branch until 1974, when they moved to Lemoore, California.  She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Dr. Sara Nell Thomas, and a sister Desma Collins Dover.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 10, 2002, at 1 p.m., from Wards Funeral Home Chapel in Gainesville, with Rev. Joel Shadburn officiating.  Interment was in Alta Vista Cemetery.

Surviving were daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Collis Nisbet, of Cayucos, California; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John Kenney, of Lemoore, California; granddaughter, Sarah Marie Kenney, of Hollywood, California; grandsons and families; John Kenney, II, and his wife, Roxanne, of Clovis, California; Tom Nesbit and his wife Diane and their children; Brooke and Zachary, of Atascadero, California; Phil Nisbet and his wife Cory and their children Katie, Nick and Ellie Jo, of Atascadero; and many relatives and friends in Gainesville and Blairsville.

edward kolb, jr.

 

Mr. Edward Michael Kolb, Jr., age 74, of Blairsville and Bradenton, FL, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a heart attack.  Mr. Kolb was born on June 8, 1928 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Edward M. Kolb, Sr. and the late Anna Schlites Kolb.  Mr. Kolb was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bradenton, FL.  Mr. Kolb was a loving husband and father and was loved by all who knew him.

Surviving Mr. Kolb are his loving wife of fifty one years, Elsbeth Thomann Kolb of Bradenton; two daughters and one son-in-law, Pamela C. Kolb of Bradenton, Sandra and Craig Dibler of Sarasota, FL; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Edward and Nanette Kolb of Bradenton, Peter Kolb of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Meghann and Matthew Dibler, Michael and Christopher Kolb, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.
