Mrs.
Elizabeth Ann Wages age 71 of
Blairsville passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 in the Union General
Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs.
Wages was born on August 24, 1938 in Blairsville, GA, the daughter of
the late
Lee Stephens and the late Addie Jackson Stephens. She
married Leon Wages in 1957 and they had
four children, one daughter and three sons.
Elizabeth loved to sew, gardening and writing poetry. She loved her family and her country. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Leon in 2008, her parents, her sister Aline, brothers, Frank Carter,
Cecil, Claude
and Bill. Elizabeth was a member of
Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
Elizabeth is survived by her
daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Michael Gardner of Powder Springs,
son and
daughter-in-law, Steven and Layne Wages of Clairmont, son and
daughter-in-law,
Todd and Bobbie Lynn of Loganville, son Alan Wages and future
daughter-in-law
April of Lawrenceville, four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Paul
Eugene and
Anita Stephens of Santa Rosa, FL, Riley Stephens of Blairsville, Henry
and
Martha Stephens of Dalton, Jack and Libby Stephens of Blairsville, four
grandchildren, Lauren, Josh, Dakota and Bradley, six great
grandchildren, many
other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service was held on Monday,
August 16, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev.
Stacy
Dyer officiating. Special music was
presented by Merle and Angie Fortenberry.
In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that
memorials may
be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Wages. The family met with friends at the funeral
home on Monday from 10-11 a.m.

Mrs. Jane
Butt Franks, age 54 of
Gainesville, GA, formerly of Blairsville, passed away Friday, August
13, 2010
in Gainesville.
Jane was born April 30, 1956 in
Hiawassee, GA to the late Robert and Betty Phillips Butt.
She was a former member of Antioch Baptist
Church.
Survivors include: husband, Alan
Franks, step-daughters, Seantee Wilson of Ringgold, GA and Tessy
Galloway of
Chatsworth, GA, brothers, Mike Butt of Jonesboro, GA and Phillip Butt
of Tate,
GA, sister, Elizabeth Perry of Sky Valley, GA, step-grandsons, Devin
Wilson and
Damon Winkler, step-granddaughter, Jada Wilson and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday,
August 15, 2010 at 4 PM from Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.
Billy Rabern
officiating. Music
was provided by Randall Franks. Interment
was in Ebenezer Baptist Church
Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Randall
Franks, Donnie Phillips, Ivan Phillips, Brock Kelley, Allen Butt and

Mr.
Vaughn Harvey Nicholson, age 85 of
Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Union County
Nursing
Home in Blairsville.
Vaughn was born Saturday, July 25,
1925 in Hiawassee, GA, to the late Harvey and Eula Arrendale Nicholson. He was a member of First Baptist Church of
Blairsville and served in the US Army during WWII.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
sisters, Faye Nichols and Madge Stephens; and a brother, Rex Nicholson.
Surviving family members include:
brother, F.C. Nicholson of Blairsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday,
August 11, 2010 at 6 p.m. at the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in
Blairsville,
with Rev. Ray Potts officiating. Music was
provided by Phil Nichols. Interment was
in Union Memory Gardens. Serving as
pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Phil Nichols, Anthony
Nichols, Sonny
Mahan, Devan Mahan, Ryan England and Larry Stephens.
The family received friends

Mrs. Mary
Lillian Curcio age 94 of
Blairsville passed away on August 8, 2010 following an extended
illness. Mrs. Curcio was born on November
16,1915 in
Olean, NY., the daughter of the late Walter Thomas and the late
Katherine Jones
Thomas. She retired from the Allegany
County Dept. of Social Services after twenty years of service. She was
a
veteran of the US Marines of WWII. Mary
loved gardening, needle work, traveling and visiting her friends and
relatives.
She was a loving mother, sister and
grandmother. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Samuel P. Curcio in 1978. Mrs. Curcio was of the
Baptist faith.
Surviving
Mrs.
Curcio are one son and daughter-in-law, John and Beverly White of
Murphy, NC,
one sister, Winifred Howard of Centerville, OH, two grandchildren,
Geoffrey L.
and Laura White of Huntersville, NC and Shannon M. White of Bermudian
Landing,
Belize of Central America, many other relatives and friends also
survive.
A
memorial service will be held at a later
date and interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery with
military

Mr.
Evin
Hale Patterson age 66 of Honaker Rd., Blairsville passed away on
Sunday, August
8, 2010 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Mr.
Patterson was born on Dec. 14, 1943 in Union County, the son of the
late Howard
Patterson and the late Thelma Sims Patterson. He
was a native and lifelong resident of Union
County. He had worked with Georgia Boot
as supervisor for over twenty-five years. After
retiring from Georgia Boot he was
employed with United Community Bank for over eleven years. Evin enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and
most of all his church. He was a member
of the Dooley Masonic Lodge. He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Kelley Ona Patterson and a sister,
Muralona
Murray. Evin was a member and Deacon of
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Surviving
Evin are
his loving wife of thirty-eight years, Faye Carroll Patterson of
Blairsville,
three sisters and two brother-in-laws, Geraldine and Norman Zecher of
Middletown, OH, Rosella Moore of Middletown, Shirley and Don McClure of
McDonough, GA, four brothers and three sister-in-laws, Roy and Reba
Patterson,
Dale and Nora Patterson, Richard and Diane Patterson and Benny
Patterson all of
Blairsville, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends
also
survive.
Funeral
services will be held on Wednesday Aug. 11, 2010 at 2 p.m. from the
Mountain
View Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Beavers and Rev. Evan Hughes
officiating.
Special music presented by the Mt. Pleasant Church Choir. The following gentleman served as pallbearers:
Doug Hughes, Denver Garrett, Jason Helton, Jeremy Adams, Ralph Carroll
and
David Carroll. Serving as honorary
pallbearers were Hubert Legg, Eric Collins, Horace Parker, Charles
Hughes,
Steve Kimsey and Bryan Southern. Interment
followed in the Dillard Chapel Cemetery. The
family met with friends at the funeral

Mrs.
Lillian A. Jackson, age 87 of
Blairsville, died Tuesday, August 10, 2010.
Mrs. Jackson was born on May 22,
1923, and was a native of Jackson County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Amanda Ash,
and a
grandson, Scott Shattles. She was a
seamstress, mother and “Mimi” to all her children who loved her. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband,
Russell Ray Jackson, daughter, Janice (Donald) Shattles, granddaughter,
Layne
(John) Ward, great grandchildren, Andrew and Jeffrey Ward, all of
Blairsville;
sisters, Gladys Pearsall, Gadsden, AL, Jessie Myer, Arnoldsville, GA;
and a
brother, Rev. James Ashe, Bishop, GA.
Services were held in the chapel of
Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 14, with the
Rev.
James Ashe officiating. Burial was in
Ricks Family Cemetery, Blackville.

clifford g. talley jr. (coach)
Clifford
G. Talley
Jr. (Coach) age 72 of Blairsville and also of Bradenton, FL passed away
peacefully on Tuesday August 10 ,2010 in the Union General Hospital
following
an extended illness. Mr. Talley was born
on March 28, 1938 in Wood River, IL, the son of the late Clifford G.
Talley Sr.
and the late Mildred Brown Talley. Coach
Talley was a teacher and coach for over thirty-two years in Illinois. He was Captain at the University of Missouri
at
the same time that Wilt Chamberlain was the Captain at Kansas
University and
they played against each other many times.
He also toured with the Harlem Globe Trotters while playing with
the
Washington Generals. Coach Talley
enjoyed boating, golf, sports, cars and renovating houses with his wife
Linda. He was a loving husband, father
and grandfather and played an important role in the lives of many
student-athletes over the years. Mr.
Talley and his wife attended Ivy Log Baptist Church.
Surviving
Coach
Talley are his loving wife of fourteen years, Linda Poli Talley of
Blairsville
and Bradenton, FL, one daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Jody Moore of
Ft.
Lauderdale, FL, one son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Noreen Talley of
Newport
Beach, CA, six grandchildren, Elizabeth, R.J., Mary Katherine and Ryan
Moore,
Ethan and Lauren Talley.
A
memorial service
and interment will be held at a later date in Illinois.

Mrs.
Frankie “Belva Jean” Barnes age 66 of Mt.
Pleasant Church Rd., Blairsville,
Georgia, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010 at her home following an
extended
illness. Mrs. Barnes was born on Jan.
30, 1944 in Dahlonega, GA, the daughter of the late Thomas Brown and
the late
Cora Jane Nix Brown. She was a native
and lifelong resident of Union County.
She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great
grandmother. Mrs. Barnes was preceded in
death by her
husband, Vernon Barnes in March of this year, a daughter, Norma Jean
Barnes, a
son, Ronnie Barnes, brothers, Oble Francis, Benny and Wacel Brown, and
a
sister, Mary Ruth Bagwell. Mrs. Barnes
was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Barnes are two
daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne Green and her fiancé, Danny Payne of
Blairsville, Sarah and Nelson Patterson of Blairsville, two sons and
one
daughter-in-law, Johnny and Debbie Barnes of Blairsville, Keith Barnes

Mr.
Wymer Gordon Sampson Jr. age 79 of Pleasant Hill Rd.,
Blairsville passed away on Monday August 9, 2010 in the Union General
Hospital
following a brief illness. Mr. Sampson was born on Jan. 16, 1931 in
Towns
County, GA, the son of the late Wymer Gordon Sampson Sr. and the late
Beulah
Mae Swanson Sampson. He was a lifelong
resident of Union and Towns counties. Wymer
retired from Standard Telephone Company as Supervisor with over
thirty-eight
years of service. He loved country
music, NASCAR and playing with the computer, but most of all he loved
his
church and loved the Lord. He was a past
member of the Union County Lions Club. Mr.
Sampson was a member of Old Union Baptist Church and was Chairman of
the
Deacons.
Surviving
Mr.
Sampson are his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Mattie Allison
Sampson of
Blairsville, three daughters and son-in-laws, Connie and Tony Durham of
Chickamauga, GA, Karen and Bill Taffs of Tucker, GA, Kathy Sampson of
Oakwood,
GA, one son, Phillip Sampson Sr. of Oakwood, one sister, Frances Cook
of
Marietta, aunt, Pearl Carson of Canton, nieces, Melissa Cook and Dave
Sherman
of Woodstock, Pam and Kenny Allred of Canton, five grandchildren,
Allison,
Jennifer, Phillip Wymer Sampson Jr., Georgiana and Victoria, one great

will be held on Thursday August 12, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the Old Union
Baptist Church
