Mrs.
Anna Bowling, age 81, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, August
11, 1998
in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs. Bowling was born Monday, November 6, 1916, in Cherokee
County, NC,
a daughter of the late Samuel hatchet and Nola Price Hatchett. She was a
homemaker and a lifelong resident
of this area. Mrs. Bowling attended The
House of Prayer Church.
Mrs.
Bowling is survived by two nephews, Mr. Hatchett and
William J. Nichols of Gainesville and a niece, Ann Sprague of
California.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, August 15, 1998 at 2 p.m. from the chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with the Rev. Horace Potts
officiating. Special music was presented
by Neal and Patsy
Efird. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Glen Davenport, Jim mason, Christopher Menard, Jeremy
Menard, Leon
Stroud, and Jim Nichols. Interment was
in the Bellview Cemetery in the Bellview Community of North Carolina.

Mr.
Gerard R. McNulty, 68, of Pembroke Pines, Florida and Blairsville,
Georgia
passed away Friday, July 31, 1998. He is
survived by his loving wife, Aileen, daughters, Theresa and Kathy, son,
Patrick, and brother, Robert of St. Petersburg, Florida, and six
grandchildren.
Mr. McNulty
passed away after a 10 year battle with ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease). He is a graduate of St. Paul’s High Scool in
St. Petersburg, the University of Tampa and attended Stetson Law School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean
conflict during which time he performed as the lead singer for the
“Noveleers”
in the Special Services division of the United States Army. He moved to Miami in 1961 from St. Petersburg
where he continued his career as a television news producer and
director at
Channel 10. he
served as the production manager at Channel 10 for 17 years. After leaving Channel 10, he was employed by
the Miami-Dade Police Department in the Police Property Bureau.
Mr. McNulty
was a devout Roman Catholic of Irish descent. his
loving family struggled with him during his arduous battle with ALS. Despite the physical challenges caused by his
paralysis “Jerry” remained upbeat and determined to contribute to
society. He is eternally grateful to the
Miami-Dade
Police Department for making reasonable handicap accommodations that
allowed
him to continue working, and to family, friends, health care assistants
that
made his life more comfortable toward the end.
His family will always remember him as a devoted husband, loving
father
and doting “grandpa.”
Funeral Mass
and visitation were held in Florida, and graveside services were held
Tuesday,
August 6, 1998 from Laurel Hills Memorial Gardens in Hiawassee, with
Father Tim
Gadziola officiating. Military
graveside honors were presented by
the North Georgia Honor Guard.

Mrs.
Angie Akins Turner, 32, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, August
14, 1998
at her home. Mrs. Turner was born
Sunday, May 22, 1966, in Cherokee County, NC.
She had lived most of her life in this area, and was a member of
First
United Methodist Church of Union
County, and was very active with the American Cancer Society and was
Chairperson of the Reach to Recovery Volunteer Program for the Mountain
District. She had been preceded in death
by her grandmother, Fannie Akins, in 1989.
Mrs. Turner
is survived by her husband and two-year-old daughter, John Mark and
Amelia Anne
Turner of Blairsville; her parents, Bud and Ann Akins of Blairsville;
maternal
grandparents, Norman and Bonnie McCollum of Blairsville; brother and
sister-in-law, William Jr. and Jan Akins of Lithia Springs, GA; sister
and
brother-in-law, Kim and Chad Kitchens of Social Circle, GA; two
nephews,
William Akins, III and Tyler Akins.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, August 16, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. from First
United
Methodist Church of Union County, with Rev. Eddie Herring and Rev. Bo
Turner officiating. Specially selected
music was presented by
Janice Catron. The following gentlemen
served as pallbearers: Craig Turner, Tony Turner, John Varner, Scott
Carter,
Curtis Colwell and Tony Groves.
Interment was in the Union memory Gardens Cemetery.

mrs. elva jean mcbride mcclure
Elva
Jean McClure, age 83, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday,
August 10,
1998 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs. McClure was born in Canada, on Wednesday, April 28, 1915, a
daughter of the late Edward McBride and Jane Kidd McBride.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. McClure
was a seasonal resident of Union
County, spending part of the year in Bushnell, Florida.
In Bushnell, she was a member of Bushnell
Assembly of God Church, and when in Union County she attended The House
of
Prayer Church.
Mrs.
McClure is survived by her husband, Hilliard C. McClure of Blairsville;
son and
daughter-in-law, James H. and Marion McClure, of Blairsville; and
daughter and
son in law, Jane E. and Doug West, of Durant, Florida.
Two sisters, Ethel Cook, of Bowmanville,
Ontario, and Mary Watson of Orangeville, Ontario; 6 grandchildren, 6
great grandchildren,
and nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, August 12, 1998 at 11
a.m. from House of Prayer Church with Rev. Jerry Helton officiating. Special music was presented by HOUSE of
Prayer Church Choir, Kiersten and Dale Holden.
The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Doug West, Dale
Holden,
John Graham, Doug Watson, and Robert Crum.

Mr.
John Amory Holt, age 60, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday, August
9, 198,
at his home following an extended illness.
Mr. Holt was born in Cook County, Illinois, on Saturday, June
11, 1938,
the son of the late Arthur Holt and Mary Repas Holt.
Mr. Holt had been living in this area since
1996, and was of the Catholic faith. Mr.
Holt was a musician.
Mr. Holt is
survived by his wife, Cheryl Lynn Gray Holt, of Blairsville; sons: Sean

Mr.
Albert Carlton Colwell, Jr., age 69, of Tucker, Georgia, passed away
Saturday,
August 8, 1998. Mr. Colwell was born
Friday, April 12, 1929, in Union County, Georgia, a son of the late
Albert
Carlton Colwell, Sr., and Grapelle England Colwell.
He was a graduate of Union County High
School, and attended Young Harris College.
Mr. Colwell graduated from North Georgia College, and did
graduate work
at Emory University. While in college,
he won a Tall Tales contest. He served
in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
Mr. Colwell was a retired public school teacher, and taught at
Mt. Pleasant
School in Union County, for a period of time.
Mr. Colwell taught Science in Jr. High and High School, in
Douglas Cobb,
and Fulton Counties. He had briefly
served as dean of men for Rio Grande College in Rio Grande, Ohio, and
had been
employed as an insurance adjuster in Chicago.
Mr. Colwell had served as a volunteer for the Red Cross and the
Fernbank
Science Center, and his hobbies were listening to scanners and short
wave
radio, gardening, geography, and astronomy.
After retirement, he was employed as a deliveryman for Wholesale
florists in the Atlanta area. Surviving
are
his wife, Jean, of Tucker; two daughters: Sylvia Colwell of
Philadelphia, and
Janet McCord of Suwannee, GA; brothers, Rev. jack Colwell of Pinerust,
GA, and
Max Colwell, of Miller’s Creek, NC; and sister, Dottie Coltrane, of
Atlanta; a
grandson, Mitchell McCord also survive.
Graveside
services were held Friday, August 14, 1998 at 11
a.m. from the Blairsville City Cemetery with Rev. B.A. Buchanan
officiating. Memorial services were held
11 a.m. Saturday,
August 15, 1998, from Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Gwinnett,
in
Lawrenceville.
