mary frances ownbey

 

Mrs. Mary Frances Ownbey, age 60, of Harrell Mauney Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mrs. Ownbey was born on Feb. 18, 1942 in Sevierville, TN, the daughter of the late James Roy McCarter and the late Connie Grindle McCarter.  She had lived in Union County for the past twenty years.  Mrs. Ownbey was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Ownbey are four sons and three daughter-in-laws, Rex and Carter Murphy of Cumming, GA, David and Cindy Murphy of Cedar Town, GA, Anthony McCarter of Chatsworth, Jr. and Renee Akins of Elberton, GA; two sisters, Ruth Mauney of Blairsville and Dorothy Floyd of Blairsville; four grandchildren, April and Kayla Murphy, Michelle and Kasey Akins; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Rev. R.L. Martin and Rev. Horace Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by Moe Weaver and Amy Bowles.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Kaylon Grubbs, Jake Grubbs, Jarred Grubbs, Junior Tow, Franky Davidson and Adam Dye.  Interment followed in the Revival Baptist Church Cemetery.

r. earl waltz

 

Mr. R. Earl Waltz, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2002, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Waltz was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, on Tuesday, June 1, 1926, a son of the late Raymond Earl Waltz and Ernestine Hemberger Waltz.  He was a veteran of World War II, ad served in the U.s. Navy, and was also a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.  Mr. Waltz was a graduate of the University of Miami and later owned and operated Hollywood Plumbing Company, then moving to Blairsville in 1989.  He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Julie McConville Waltz, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, John and Charlene Waltz, of Tallahassee, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Alexia Waltz, of Suwannee, Georgia; two brothers: Emmett Waltz, of Tallahassee and Robert Waltz, of Winter Springs, Florida; four grandchildren: Katherine, Christina, and Patricia Waltz, of Tallahassee; Ryan Waltz, of Suwannee, GA; several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Memorial mass was held Friday, August 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Father Richard Wise officiating.  Military Honors were presented by North Georgia Honor Guard, with interment in St. Clare’s Columbarium at the church.

margaret a. “peg” sauer

 

Mrs. Margaret A. “Peg” Sauer, age 78, died on Saturday, August 17, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Pat Aube Gray, in Blairsville, GA, as a result of lung cancer.  A former long-time resident of Jupiter, FL, and before that, Long Island, NY, she moved to Blairsville, GA in 2001.  An avid golfer, Mrs. Sauer was a founding member of the Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club and a member of Turtle Creek Golf Club in Jupiter, FL, and the Four County Golf League.

Mrs. Sauer was born on April 22, 1924, in New London, Connecticut, the daughter of the late John J. O’Connell and the late Margaret Connor.  She was preceded in death by her son, William P. Sauer, Jr. and grandson, William P. Sauer, III, and her brothers, John J. and Donald M. O’Connell.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Tom Gray of Blairsville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Art Bechmann of Jupiter, FL; daughter, Debora J. Smith of Jupiter, FL; sister, Maureen O’Connell, of Long Beach, CA; grandchildren, Kerry Lingle of Orlando, FL; Brooke Taylor, Ronald, Richard and Roger Gray, Dustin and Kyle Bechmann, Skylar and Melissa Smith, of Jupiter, FL; Casey L. Sauer, of Atlanta, GA; Amy Doll of Boca Raton; Cori Papasidero, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; great grandchildren, Brittany and Judd Taylor, Ryan Alyssa and Shelby Gray, of Jupiter, FL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to North Georgia Hospice in Jasper, Georgia.

Memorial services will be held at Taylor and Modeen Funeral Home in Jupiter, FL on Saturday, August 24, 2002, at 2 p.m.  Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, GA was in charge of arrangement.  No local services to be held.

edgar fortenberry

 

Mr. Edgar (better known as Ed) Fortenberry, age 87, of Fortenberry Rd. Young Harris, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2002 in the Chatugue Regional Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Fortenberry was born on May 4, 1915 in Union County, the son of the late Lafayette Fortenberry and the late Laura Daniels Fortenberry.  Mr. Fortenberry was retired from the U.S. Forest Service where he served as road foreman for over thirty two years.  After his retirement he went to work with the Union County Road Dept. and worked until he was eighty one years old.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Jarrard Fortenberry in 1976.

Surviving Mr. Fortenberry are one son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Carolyn Fortenberry of Young Harris; two grandchildren, Denise Fortenberry Gurley of Young Harris and Angie Fortenberry Burch of Hiawassee; four great grandchildren, Sarah and Laura Burch, Jaryd and Jordyn Gurley; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ricky Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by the Cornerstone Baptist Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Carl Garrett, Clyde Harkins, Arthur Burnette, Earl Fortenberry, John Burch and Jeff Gurley.  Interment followed in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches.

bessie ann bridges

 

Mrs. Bessie Ann Bridges, age 52, native and lifelong resident of Suches, Georgia, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 11, 2002.

Mrs. Bridges was born on Saturday, March 11, 1950, a daughter of the late H.J. and Grapelle Grizzle Pickelsimer.  Bessie was a homemaker and loved flower gardening.  She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Suches.

Survivors include her husband Robert, of the home; son, Jody Bridges, of Suches; many friends and other relatives also survive.  She had been preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Claude Pickelsimer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at 4:00 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Don Hood and Rev. Wade Plott officiating.  Specially selected music was presented by Sarah Kelley and Susie Phillips, and Walt Grizzle.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Walt Grizzle, Tim Davis, Junior Bridges, Larry Thomas, Steve Worley, and Ernie Pruitt.  Interment followed in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.

fletcher henderson

 

Mr. Fletcher Henderson, age 78, of Gum Log, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Henderson was born on March 15, 1924 in Union County, the son of the late Will Henderson and the late Onnie Lou Smith Henderson.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lou Klasen in 1996, Susie Anita Cordell in 2000, two brothers, William Bly Henderson in 1977, Donald Henderson in 2002, and by his wife, Emma Maxine Freeman Henderson in 1995.  Mr. Henderson was a member of the Revival Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Henderson are two daughters and one son-in-law, Calleen Yvonna Smith of Blairsville, Linda Gail and Moe Weaver of Blairsville; three sisters, Maxine Sims, Ina May Bible and Regina Morgan all of East Ridge, TN; two brothers, Rayford Henderson of East Ridge, and Randall Henderson of Blairsville; four grandchildren, Tracy Allen Henderson, Jeffrey Scott Henderson, Abby Lynn Weaver, and John Curtis Weaver; two great grandchildren, Emma Nichole Henderson and Logan Blake Henderson; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Revival Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Totherow and Rev. Donald Davenport officiating.  Special music was presented by the Pilgrims and Moe Weaver.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tommy Cordell, John Wever, Moe Weaver, Roy Phillips, Talton Freeman, and Billy Freeman.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were, Hershel Childers, Quinton Wigley, Ralph Hughes, Edward Mashburn and Richard Mashburn.  Interment followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

kathleen payne seabolt

 

Mrs. Kathleen Payne Seabolt, age 80, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, August 16, 2002, at her home.

Mrs. Seabolt was born on Wednesday, June 14, 1922, a daughter of the late Burl Payne and the late Arrie Sosebee Payne Phillips.  She was a homemaker and a member of Owltown Church of God.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Seabolt was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Seabolt, in 1993.

Survivors include daughters: Annie Lou Holbrooks, Rita Holloway, Eileen Seabolt and Nickie Gaddis, all of Blairsville, Linda Peck, of Dahlonega, GA, sons: Jimmy Seabolt, Troy Seabolt, Jerry Seabolt, Ricky Seabolt, and David Seabolt, all of Blairsville; Herbert Seabolt of Murrayville, GA; half-sisters Shirley Grindle, Mary Lou Cody, Tommie Foster, Eula Bert, Betty Thibadeau, Lois Wilson, and Jo Ann Collins; half-brothers: Carols Phillips, Charles Payne; twenty-nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren also survive, along with many friends and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 17, 2002, at 4:00 p.m., from Owltown Church of God, with Rev. Michael Anderson officiating.  Special music was presented by Nickie Seabolt Gaddis and Crystal Peck.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Roger Seabolt, Steven Seabolt, Wesley Holbrooks, Cory Seabolt, Nathan Holbrooks and Randy Peck.  Interment was in Owltown Church of God Cemetery.
