george william fincher

 

Mr. George William Fincher, age 81, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, August 10, 2007 at Heartland Hospice House in Cartersville, GA.  Mr. Fincher was born Friday, May 28, 1926, in Fannin County, GA, to the late George William Fincher and the late Lemma Parks Fincher.  Mr. Fincher was a veteran of World War II, and served in the U.S. Navy.  He was a member of The American Legion; and was a member of The Masons, The Shriners, and was a former member of The Blairsville Kiwanis club.

Survivors include two sons: Kevin Fincher and Mark Fincher, both Blairsville; and a grandson, Trystyn Fincher, also of Blairsville.

No services are scheduled at this time.

The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to memorial and Honor Program, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105’ phone number 1-800-873-6983.

eva ruth southern

 

Mrs. Eva Ruth Southern, age 65, of Blairsville, GA passed away on Monday, August 13, 2007 following a period of declining health.  She was born October 23, 1941 to the late Arvel Milton Shook and Inez Hooper Shook in Towns County, GA.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James R. Southern and father, Mr. Arvel Shook.

She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Inez Shook of Young Harris, GA; daughters, Tia Clayton of Marietta, GA, Laura Brown of Blairsville, GA; sons, Ricky Southern of Kennesaw, GA, David Southern of Jacksonville, FL, Jonathan Southern of Young Harris, GA, Joe Southern of Young Harris, GA, Delin Brown of Blairsville, GA, Jimmy Souther of Young Harris, GA; brothers Paul Shook of young Harris, GA, Grover Shook of young Harris, GA, Guy Wayne Shook of Blairsville, GA, Terrell Shook of Woodstock, GA; sister, Joyce Hamby of young Harris, GA; sixteen grandchildren’ four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 2 p.m. from West Union Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Young and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Pallbearers were Joshua Southern, Michael Southern, Jes Southern, Jason Holdaway, Steve Holloway, and Brian Underwood.  Honorary pallbearers were Austin Gibson and Dustin Brown.    Interment was in West Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

chester robert lapeza, jr.

 

Mr. Chester Robert Lapeza, Jr., age 62, of Three Point Drive, Blairsville formerly Dacula, GA, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2007 unexpectedly at his home.  Mr. Lapeza was born on May 24, 1945 in Savannah, GA, the son of Betsy Webb Lapeza and the late Chester R. Lapeza, Sr.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army of the Vietnam War.  He retired from the CDC as a Research Chemist with over twenty-five years of service.  He was preceded in death by a brother, James Lapeza in 2005.  Mr. Lapeza was of the Episcopal faith.

Surviving Mr. Lapeza are one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Chester R. and Amy Lapeza of Cordele, GA; sister-in-law, Judy Lapeza of Ocean Isle, NC; two grandchildren, Chester Robert Lapeza, IV and Elijah Curtis Lapeza; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 18, 207 at 1 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Howell officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to your local Humane Society in Mr. Lapeza’s memory.

haley l. davis

 

Mrs. Haley L. Davis, age 72, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Mrs. Davis was born Monday, July 22, 1935 in Union County, GA to the late William Harkins and the late Nellie Garrett Harkins.  She was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Faith Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Davis and sister, Dorothy Johnson.

Survivors include: son & daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Kim Davis of Blairsville; daughter & son-in-law, Kathy and R.V. Warren of Chatsworth, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Gail and Bill Pfluger of San Antonio, TX; son, Eddie Davis of Blairsville; brothers, Howard Harkins of Gastonia, NC; James Harkins of Suches, GA; and W.A. Harkins of Dallas, GA; sisters, Betty Young and Laura Mae Turner both of Blairsville; grandchildren, David Davis, Charlie Davis and wife, Vicki, Jamie Stephens and husband, Jamie, Felicia Warren, Shannon Brey and husband, Michael, Roy Warren and Emily Pratt and husband, Chris; great-grandchildren, Cole, Caley, Sawyer, Allie, Jacob, Cody, Courtney, Sydney, Drake, Jessica, Joseph, Jenna, Jonathan, Caylor and Haley.  Several nieces and nephews also survive, along with many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Jenkins officiating.  Music was provided by David Chatham and Shelby McCrickard.  Interment followed in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: William Kerr, Carroll Dotson, D.J. Johnson, Roy Johnson, Doug Hughes and Mark (Sparky) Kelley.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 5-9, Friday, August 17th.

james “jim” f. leddon

 

Mr. James “Jim” F. Leddon, age 81, of Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 following an extended illness.  Mr. Leddon was born on February 1, 1926 in Haines City, FL, the son of the late Harvey Leddon and the late Margaret Lutrell Leddon.  Jim was a graduate of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy and also was a veteran of the U.S. navy of WWII.  He married his wife Lillian in 1944.  he has resided in Georgia since 1998.  Jim was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Jim are his wife, Lillian Leddon of Blairsville; one daughter, Joy Wing of Blairsville; one son, David Leddon of Las Vegas, NV; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Janelle Leddon of Orlando, FL; nephew, George Leddon, Jr. of El Paso, TX.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 21, 207 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. George Cline officiating.  Special music was presented by Betty Gurr.  Interment was in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer society in Mr. Leddon’s memory.

Mark K. Donnell, age 54, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Mark was born Thursday, September 11, 1952 in Fulton County, GA, a son of Bonnie Morris Donnelly and the late Charles Donnelly. following an extended illness.

Surviving family members, in addition to his mother Bonnie, are: brother, Dane Donnelly, of Great Falls, MT; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Paula Donnelly, of Newnan, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Larry Garrett, of Blairsville; brother Andrew Donnelly, also of Blairsville; two nieces and four nephews also survive, along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 14, 2007, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Wade Plott officiating.  Music was provided by The Kelley Trio.  Interment followed in Union memory Gardens Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Larry Garrett, Pete Zimmerman, Lee Chitwood, J.E. Corn, Lowell Martin, and Jeff Harkins.  Then family received friends at the funeral home on Monday, August 13th, from 6 until 9 p.m.

david f. fox

 

Mr. David F. Fox, age 52, of Rocky Top Heights Road, Blairsville, passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2007 in Murphy, NC doing what he loved the best, riding his Harley.  David was born Monday, May 2, 1955 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Charles and Mary Elizabeth Steele Fox.  He fulfilled his dream of moving back to the mountains in 1996 when he brought his family to Blairsville.  He enjoyed riding his Harley, being with friends, the mountain life and “tinking” in his garage.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Neal Fox, in 1980.

Surviving Davis are his children: daughter and son-in-law, Ivy and Eric Ducrou, of North Ft. Myers, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Chris Sheffield of Ft. Myers, FL; son, Christopher Neal Fox, of Blairsville; daughter, Rebecca Sue fox of Blue Ridge, GA; grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Sheffield.  Also surviving David are his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Hyatt of Graham, NC, Ellen D. Helmbrecht of Manchester, MO and Jody Michele Sanders of lake Placid, FL.  Many nieces and nephews also survive David.

Memorial services for David were held Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 4 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Harrison Bradley officiating and The Faith Singers presented the music.

Mr. Donald A. Nestor, age 52, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Union General Hospital.  Mr. Nestor was born Monday, July 25, 1955 in Mahoning County, OH to the late Donald Nestor and the late Betty Buchanan Nestor.  He had lived in Pensacola, FL and Atlanta, GA before moving to Blairsville 4 years ago and was a Christian.

Survivors include: wife, Caroline Glenn-Nestor of Blairsville, GA; son, Jonathan Nestor of Pensacola, FL; daughter, Katherine Nestor of Pensacola, FL; step-son, Zachary Glenn of Blairsville, GA; brother, Dr. Greg Nestor of Tampa, FL; sister, Lori Nestor of Pensacola, FL.

bernice parham gibby

 

Mrs. Bernice Parham Gibby, age 83, of Jackson, TN, formerly of Blairsville and Athens, GA, passed away Sunday, August 12, 20067.  Mrs. Gibby was born Saturday, March 15, 1924 in Union County, GA, to the late Hershel and Etta Mae Styles Parham.  Mrs. Gibby had been a resident of Athens for 48 years where she worked for General Time/Westclox for 25 years until her retirement.  She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Blairsville.  Mrs. Gibby moved to Brentwood, TN in 2003.  She was preceded in death by parents, Hershel and Etta styles Parham; son, Robert A. “Bobby” Gibby; brother, Harold Parham and sister, Hazel Doolittle.

Survivors include: daughter, Linda Ristuccia of Jackson; sister, Evelyn Deyton, and brother, Herbert Parham, both of Blairsville; brother, George B. Parham of Athens; grandchildren, Jason Olliff of Athens; Jennifer and Amanda Olliff, both of Brooklyn, NY; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 10 a.m. from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Blairsville with Rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Special music was provided by Ken and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers; Ryan Deyton, Don Deyton, Steve Carver, Kenny Dyer, Bill Cantrell and Jason Olliff.  The family received friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m.
