jim petty

Mr. Jim Petty, age 82, of Suches, GA, did Saturday August 16, 2008 at his home following an extended illness.

Jim was born Sunday, August 8, 1926.  He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches.  Jim entered into active military duty at age 18 under Gen. MacArthur’s Pacific Theatre and was sent to the Philippines and Japan.  He received three ribbons, Over Seas Service Bar, Good Conduct Medal, and a Meritorious Unit Award.  Later Jim was honorably discharged and came home to start his new civilian life.

He worked in Atlanta, Rockdale, and Gainesville.  He retired form Southern Bell after many dedicated years.  He was recognized for the announcement, “The number you have dialed is not a working number”, and also for the tone that you receive when you leave your phone off the hook.

He and his wife moved from Atlanta to Suches in the late 70’s.  They moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL, in the 80’s and moved back to Suches in the early 90’s and lived there until his demise.

His hobbies were music, flying, sailing, woodworking, painting, and working in church.  During his lifetime he held many positions in the churches in which he was involved.  He was song and choir leader, Sunday school teacher and superintendent of Sunday school, and went on several mission trips to South America.  He listened and cared for those around him and made the most out of any obstacle life would present.  If someone ever wronged him his only form of revenge was his unique way of looking at you (some people laughingly called this his “Evil Eye”), which for the longest time he never knew he had.

Jim was preceded in death by a grandson; James (Jimmy) Petty, and a step-grandson; Joshua Lindsey, a brother, William, and 3 sisters; Frances, Christine, and Mildred.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years; Jane Parham Petty, Suches, GA, sons: James Michael Petty and his wife, Debra of Conyers, GA, Tony Petty of Loganville, GA; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Faulkner and her husband Matt of Loganville, GA; a step-son, Ronnie Lindsey and his wife Debbie of Rutledge, GA; a step-daughter, Cynthia Ray and her husband Robert of Walnut Grove, GA; a sister, Annette Braswell of Milner, GA; grandchildren, Melissa Bryan, Jessica Chambers, Bethany Melville, Kimberly Parker, Michelle Petty, Angela Hicks, David Petty; step-grandchildren, Kristi Carr, Regina Carr, and Matthew Lindsey; and 9 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren.  Several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Baptist Church in Suches on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 2 PM with Rev. Jack Deeds and Dr. Don Pruitt officiating.

Special music was provided by Doug and Sandra West.  A special request was sung by a special friend, Clyde Railey.  His daughter, Ann Faulkner also sang a special song.  Janene Epperson also sang a special request.

Pallbearers were Matthew Faulkner, David Parker, Tommy and Brad Parham, Jerry Melville, and Matthew Lindsey.

Interment followed in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Veterans Alliance Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Amedisys Hospice Corp, 5959 Sherwood Forest Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70816 Attn: Christen Foundation or to the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
