Mr.
Jim Petty, age 82, of Suches, GA, did Saturday August 16, 2008 at his
home following
an extended illness.
Jim was
born Sunday, August 8, 1926. He was a
member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches. Jim entered into active military duty at age
18 under Gen. MacArthur’s Pacific Theatre and was sent to the
Philippines and
Japan. He received three ribbons, Over
Seas Service Bar, Good Conduct Medal, and a Meritorious Unit Award. Later Jim was honorably discharged and came
home to start his new civilian life.
He worked
in Atlanta, Rockdale, and Gainesville.
He retired form Southern Bell after many dedicated years. He was recognized for the announcement, “The
number you have dialed is not a working number”, and also for the tone
that you
receive when you leave your phone off the hook.
He and his
wife moved from Atlanta to Suches in the late 70’s.
They moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL, in the
80’s and moved back to Suches in the early 90’s and lived there until
his
demise.
His hobbies
were music, flying, sailing, woodworking,
painting,
and working in church. During his
lifetime he held many positions in the churches in which he was
involved. He was song and choir leader,
Sunday school
teacher and superintendent of Sunday school, and went on several
mission trips
to South America. He listened and cared
for those around him and made the most out of any obstacle life would
present. If someone ever wronged him his
only form of revenge was his unique way of looking at you (some people
laughingly called this his “Evil Eye”), which for the longest time he
never
knew he had.
Jim was
preceded in death by a grandson; James (Jimmy) Petty, and a
step-grandson;
Joshua Lindsey, a brother, William, and 3 sisters; Frances, Christine,
and
