mr. joseph wyly penland

 

            Mr. Joseph Wyly Penland, age 97, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 1997. 

Mr. Penland was born in Union County, Georgia, on December 18, 1899, a son of the late Joseph Penland and Margaret Crawford Penland.  He was a lifelong resident of this area and was a retired carpenter.  Mr. Penland was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church for over 80 years.  He served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for many years.  His wife, Annie Belle Hamby Penland, passed away in 1994.   

            Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Ferrell and Grapelle Penland, and daughter, Josephine Akins, all of Blairsville; two grandsons, Ronny Penland of Mableton, GA. And Karl “Buddy” Penland, of Blairsville; four great grandchildren, Daren Rowan and Karla Colwell, both of Blairsville, and Julie Penland and Elizabeth Penland, both of Mableton; great great granddaughters, Sidney Rowan and Layne Colwell also survive.

            Funeral services were held Friday, August 15, 1997 at 3 p.m. from Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville Chapel with Rev. Harley Hunter and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Junior Duckworth, Harold Crump, Danny Stephens, Johnny Hamby, Bill Hamby, and Fred Penland.  Interment was in Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville in charge of arrangements.

mrs. archie sue brewer maxton

 

            Mrs. Archie Sue Brewer Maxton, age 50, of Union County, Georgia, passed away Thursday, August 14, 1997 in Erlanger Medical Center Chattanooga,, TN. 

Mrs. Maxton was born March 10, 1947 in Union County, Georgia, a daughter of the late Charlie Brewer and Esta Dillard Brewer.  She was employed at Wal-Mart in Murphy, North Carolina.  Mrs. Maxton attended Blairsville Christian Center, and had been in several women’s rights organizations.  She had served as a former hostess in the Governor’s Mansion, 

            Surviving are her husband Thomas P. Maxton, III, of Union County; a son, Robert Curtis Dockery of Blairsville, GA.; two sisters, Hazel Moody of Dallas, Georgia, and OraLean Buchanan of Marietta, GA.; two brothers, Oscar Brewer of Springfield, TN., and Bobby Brewer of Charlotte, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held Sunday, August 17, 1997 from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Wofford Kelley officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Pat Young, Joe Dillard, Jack Dillard, Lon Dillard, Curtis Colwell, and Danny Dillard.  Interment was in Union County Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville on Monday, August 18, 1997 at 4 p.m.

mr. jared james jackson

 

            Mr. Jared James Jackson, age 19, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 1997 in University of Tennessee at Knoxville Hospital from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident. 

Mr. Jackson was born May 23, 1978, in Polk County, Florida and had lived in this area for six years.  He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. 

            Surviving are wife, Enid Davenport Jackson and a son, Justin Andrew James Jackson, both of Blairsville; his parents, James A. Jackson and Carol Woodard Jackson, both of Blairsville; two sisters, Stephanie Giammarco and Selena Jackson, both of Blairsville, and a brother, Jeremy Jackson, also of Blairsville. 

            Funeral services were held Saturday, August 23, 1997 at 2 p.m. from Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Dilbeck officiating.  Special music was presented by Mrs. Martha Davenport.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Bobby Jackson, Danny Patterson, Brian Howard, Robert Washington, Christopher Cole, and Keith Lockwood.  Interment was in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
