velma ann poteete

 

Mrs. Velma Ann Poteete, age 94, of Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Poteete was born on May 11, 1911 in Union County, the daughter of the late Samuel Jasper Stephens and the late Mary Franks Stephens.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She had been a resident of Branan Lodge for over fifteen years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Randall Poteete in 1955 and also by a daughter, Lois Poteete Boyette, one brother and two sisters.  Mrs. Poteete was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blairsville.

Surviving Mrs. Poteete are three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and John Dorsey of Okatie, SC, Elaine and Carroll Duchow of Indian Trail, NC, Linda and Bill Long of Tampa, FL; two brothers and sisters-in-law, June and Sue Stephens of Blairsville, Oliver and Lula Stephens of Blairsville; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 at 10 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. George Cline officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, June Stephens, John Dorsey, Bill Long, Tom Anthony, Jeff Dorsey and Tommy Stephens.  Interment followed in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

Junior esco davis

 

Mr. Junior Esco Davis, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at his home.  Mr. Davis was born Monday, March 9, 1931 in Union County, Georgia, to the late Charlie Davis and the late Pearl Gilreath Davis.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Patterson Davis, in 1999.  Mr. Davis had lived most of his life in Union County, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include: daughter, Brenda Carroll of Blairsville, Georgia; son, Dennis Davis of Blairsville, Georgia; daughter, Mary Ann Smith of Blairsville, Georgia; brother, Glen Davis of Cleveland, Georgia; sister, Idell Lunsford of Hinesville, Georgia; grandchildren: Wesley Carroll, Michael Carroll, Toni Smith, Kyle Smith, Jamie Carroll, and Jennifer Carroll; and great-grandchildren, Dakota Carroll and Dillon Carroll.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 26, 2005 at 2 PM from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with the Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelley Trio.  Interment followed in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Eddie Smith, Steven Douchette, Kyle Smith, Hal Crisp, Wesley Carroll and Michael Carroll.

mrs. barbara lee christman

 

Mrs. Barbara Lee Christman, age 67, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, August 26, 2005 at her home.  Barbara was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 30, 1938.  She was the eldest of three children born to Philip and Margaret Nauman.  She graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a BS in Elementary Education.  She taught for several years in the central Michigan area.  She gave up her career to be a full-time mother.  Barbara returned to the work force as the Head Teller for the Florida Commerce Credit Union in Tallahassee, Florida.  She retired from Florida Commerce in 1999.  She and her husband, Harry, moved to Blairsville, GA, that same year.  Barbara was active as a Boy and Girl Scout leader and participated in her children’s various school activities.  She volunteered her time as a substitute teacher.  Barbara always had a smile for those around her and a good opinion of everyone.  She will be remembered for her patience, kindness and the love she showed to all those she met.

She is survived by Harry Christman, her husband of 45 years; children, Eric and Connie Christman and Andrea and Chris Van Loan; mother Margaret Nauman; brother, Robert Nauman; sister Judith Da Silva; grandchildren Connor and Strider Christman.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 2 PM from the Cochran Funeral Home with the Pastor Dave Wesche officiating.  If you wish, in lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to The American Cancer Society, % Sue Upchurch, 4344 Mulkey Gap Road, Blairsville, Georgia 30512.

mrs. anne h. stalfort

 

Mrs. Anne H. Stalfort, age 55, of Deavers Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Stalfort was born on Aug. 19, 1950 in Grand Rapids, MI., the daughter of the late John Hamer and the late Phyllis Crane Hamer.  She had been employed with R Ranch in Dahlonega where she was an accountant.  She was a veteran of the US Air force of the Vietnam War.  She was preceded in death by her husband Gary Stalfort.  Mrs. Stalfort attended the Disciple of Christ Church.

Surviving Mrs. Stalfort are two daughters and one son-in-law, Jennifer and Kevin Gillispie of Blairsville, Natalie Wheeler of Blairsville, her fiancé, Lum Brown of Blairsville, Seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Benjamin and Victoria Adams all of Blairsville, Christine and Ashley Parce, Joseph and Andrew Brown all of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Union General Hospital Auxiliary in Mrs. Stalfort’s memory.

mrs. aileen wilson mcnulty

 

Mrs. Aileen Wilson McNulty age 74, of Davie, FL., formerly of Blairsville passed away on Tuesday evening Aug. 23, 2005 after a long struggle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.  She was born to parents Hester and Irving Wilson in St. Petersburg, FL, on May 21, 1931, and married to Gerald R. McNulty on September of 1951.  She is survived by her sister, Christine Ansell of Virginia, and by three loving children and their spouses: Kathy NcNulty Webb and Alan, Theresa NcNulty Morris and Fred all of Davie, FL., Patrick and Edna McNulty of Aniston, AL.  She was the proud grandmother of Fred and Melissa Morris, Alan and Katie Webb, Danny and Shannon McNulty, and many nieces and nephews.

Aileen moved to Miami in 1961 when her husband “Jerry” became the news director at WPGL, Channel 10.  She maintained many loving relationships with her family and friends from St. Petersburg, North Georgia, and church families at New Testament Baptist Church in Miami and the First Baptist Church in Blairsville, Ga.  She worked as a hair stylist in South Dade until Hurricane Andrew devastated her home in 1992.

Aileen was the victim of shooting in 1982 which prompted her to devote her energies to victim’s rights causes.  As a victim’s Advocate, she helped mobilize a grass-roots effort sponsored by the Honorable Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen to pass the first Victim’s Rights legislation in the state of Florida.  She was present when Governor Robert Martinez signed the bill, and it became a model for legislation in other states.

In later years, she cared for her beloved husband “Jerry” while he struggled with ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease).  After his death, she enjoyed time with her family, grandchildren and friends as her own disease progressed.  She will always be remembered as a devoted and loving mother who is now at peach in Heaven with her beloved husband, her parents, and her Almighty Savior.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday Aug. 31, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Blairsville with Dr. Fred Locke officiating.  Interment followed in the Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens, in Hiawassee.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to The First Baptist Church of Blairsville, PO Box 2058, Blairsville, GA 30514 in Mrs. McNulty’s memory.

jay shupe

 

Mr. Jay Shupe, age 73, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, in Gainesville, Georgia.  Mr. Shupe was born Thursday, June 23, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Augustus Jackson Shupe, Sr. and the late Sarah Helen Lewis Shupe.  He was a Master Mason, and a member of Snellville Masonic Lodge, #99, F&AM, and a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean War.

Survivors include: wife, Carole Lance Shupe of Blairsville, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Lisa & Steve Cockerham of Blairsville, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Lesley & Tom Tucker of Blairsville, GA; granddaughter, Emily Tucker of Blairsville, GA, granddaughter, Sara Beth Cockerham of Blairsville, GA, grandson, and Sam Cockerham of Blairsville, GA.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 27, 2005 at 3 PM from the First Baptist Church Of Blairsville with the Rev. Danny Parris, and Dr. Fred Lodge officiating.  Special music was provided by Minister R. Terry Hooper, Paula Hooper, and Rita Hooper.  The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Mickey Cummings, Shaun Grate, Steve Hughes, Joe Satterfield, Elliott Hill, and Steve Duran.  The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as honorary pallbearers: Dennis Jordan, Leon Davenport, John Snow, Charles Jenkins, George Radcliff, and Jim Grantham.  Interment will follow in Union Memory Gardens.

The family received friends at First Baptist Church of Blairsville, from 1-3 pm, Saturday, August 27.

In lieu of flowers, if you desire, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Blairsville, Building Fund, P.O. Box 2058, Blairsville, Georgia 30514.

Mrs. Diane Kay Lewis, age 61, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2005 at North East Georgia Medical Center.  Mrs. Lewis was born Thursday, August 17, 1944 in Volusia County, Florida, to the late Jack Rountree and Peggy Shiles Rountree.  She was of the Lutheran faith, and had lived in Blairsville for about 10 months, moving here from Deland, Florida.

Survivors include: husband, E. Odell Lewis of Blairsville, GA; mother, Peggy Rountree of Blairsville, GA; son, James Lewis of Dallas, TX; son, Randell Lewis of Winterpark, FL; daughter, Kelly Lewis Patrick of Corinth, TX; brother, Jack Rountree of Blairsville, GA; sister, Judy Ferreira of Knoxville, TN; brother, Jim Rountree of Gainesville, FL; and 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 27, 2005 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Pastor Tim Braun officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to Humane Society’s Mountain Shelter, P.O. Box 1252, Blairsville, Georgia 30514.
