mr. billy garland harper

 

Mr. Billy Garland Harper, age 58, of Joshua Lane, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2002 in the Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville following a brief illness.  Mr. Harper was born on December 30, 1943 in Polk County, Tennessee, the son of the late Garland Harper and the late Juanita Turner Harper.  Mr. Harper was a lifelong resident of Union County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Harper are one daughter, Angela Harper of Blairsville; three sons, James Harper of Deerfield Beach, FL, Kevin Rogers of Blairsville; Jason Harper of Blairsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Ray and Patricia Harper of Turtletown, TN; one granddaughter, Rachelle Davis of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 29, 2002 at 2 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Cheatham officiating.  Special music was presented by Charlotte Flowers and Wiladine Ware.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Eugene McClure, Jimmy McClure, Bobby Davis, Billy Davis, Ricky Davis and Jimmy Cox.  Interment followed in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting military honors.

andrew carrington (carl) bridges, jr.

 

Andrew Carrington (Carl) Bridges, Jr., age 89, died in his sleep Tuesday, August 27, 2002. at his home in Blairsville, GA.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 1, 2002, 2:L00 p.m. at the First Baptist church chapel, Blairsville, GA.  The family will receive friends following the service at the chapel.

He was born in Georgia on October 5, 1912, spent most of his life until retirement in Stuart, Florida.  He worked for the Florida Power and Light Co. from 1945 until he retired in 1977 beginning as a meter reader and eventually becoming the commercial representative for all of martin County, FL.  He was a scout-master for years and a deacon in the First Baptist church.  On retirement, he and his wife Frances then moved to Plumtree, NC where they lived perhaps the happiest years of their lives on a lovely remote mountainside that became a favorite vacation place by both sides of the family.  During this time he become one of the mainstays of the Plumtree Presbyterian Church as an elder and choir member.  In 1996, eh and Frances moved to their new home in Blairsville where he become very active in the First Baptist Church, singing in the choir and occasionally soloing.  He later also joined the bell choir.

Throughout his life he was known for his readiness to help those in need, even complete strangers, and was beloved by all who knew him.  Survivors include his wife of 67 years Frances Brooks Bridges of Blairsville, GA; sister Susan Bridges McKenzie of Blairsville, GA; son Brooks Bridges and his wife Maureen Farrell of Quaker St., NY; grandchildren Stephen Bridges and his wife Tracy Baker of NYC, Karen Bridges and her husband John Giles of Washington, DC.

mr. tasker william beavers

 

Mr. Tasker William Beavers, age 79, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2002 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville following an extended illness.

Mr. Beavers was born in Union County, Georgia on Thursday, November 23, 1922, a son of the late Norman Beavers and Lola Thomas Beavers.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.  Mr. Beavers was two times Past Master of Oakdale Masonic Lodge in Cobb County and when he returned to Union County, was a member of Dooley Masonic Lodge.  Mr. Beavers was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church where he and his family attended.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Beavers (a daughter of the late rev. E.C. Mitchell and Mae Mitchell); son, Donnie Beavers of Alabama; daughter, Linda Beavers of Blairsville, and daughter, Brenda Dykman of Ocala, Florida; sister, Margie Raper of Blairsville; brother, Press Beavers of Blairsville; two half-brothers, Don and Lawrence Beavers, both of Blairsville; seven grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at 2 pm from Liberty Baptist Church of Blairsville with Rev. Brent Chatham, Rev. Junior Waddell, Rev. Allen Clayton, and Rev. Paul Wehunt officiating.  Special music will be presented by Margie Chambers and Karen Shaw.  The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: David Harris, Eric Beavers, Bill Etters, Buddy Hedgcock, Clinton Patterson, and Benny White.  Interment will be in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.  Visitation at the funeral home will begin after 12 noon on Tuesday, September 3, 2002.

delma ross pickelsimer

 

Mrs. Delma Ross Pickelsimer, age 83, of Smyrna, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville; Georgia, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2002 in Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.

Mrs. Pickelsimer was born in Fannin County, Georgia, on Sunday, August 17, 1919, a daughter of the late George M. Ross and Thedoshia King Ross.  She was a homemaker and had lived in Smyrna for 25 years, Prior to that, she had lived in Detroit, Michigan.  Mrs. Pickelsimer loved children  and enjoyed spending time with them and giving them snacks after school.  She was widely known for giving this special care to children who lived in her apartment complex.  Mrs. Pickelsimer had been preceded in death by her husband Richard.

Survivors include a sister, Dolly Cook, of Blairsville; a brother, W.T. Ross, of Junction City, Kansas; several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 1, 2002, at 2:00 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Ned Wilcoxon officiating.  Special music was presented by Mr. Howard Brys.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Donald Cook, Sr., Billy Joe Cook, Kenneth Ross, R.V. Warren, Kevin Daniels, and Tommy Childers.  Interment was in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.
