Mr. James Douglas “Doug” Carr, age 60, of Blue Ridge, Georgia, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home.  Doug was born Monday, May 26, 1957 in Fannin County, Georgia to the late John Wesley Carr, Sr and the late Virdie Payne Carr.

Survivors include: brother, John Wesley Carr, Jr. of jasper, GA; sisters, jean Carr Jones of Canton, GA, Sue Carr Griffith of Epworth, GA, Amelia Carr Craig of Douglasville, GA, Annette Carr of Dallas, GA, Marijoyce Carr Porcelli of Belmont, NC, Margaret Carr McClain of Adairsville, GA, Edna Lea Carr Hedden of Blairsville, GA and brother Leon Carr of Mobile, GA.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at 2 p.m. from Mt. Liberty Baptist Church with the Reverend Ernest German officiating.  Interment followed in Mt. Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Terry Hedden, David Craig Jim McClain, Rob Porcelli, Larry Sosebee, and Derrick Payne.

mary denise french

 

Mrs. Mary Denise French, age 68, of Faith Acres Rd., Blairsville passed away on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. French was born on Oct. 1, 1938 in Manchester, CT, the daughter of the late Clifford McNamara and the late Catherine Ennis McNamara.  Mary was a member of the Union County Lions Club, a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and a former member of S.A.F.E. House of Union County.  She enjoyed life to the fullest.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clarence French in 2003.  Mrs. French was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Surviving Mrs. French are one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Clarence and Shelby French III of Dahlonega, one daughter, Nancy Doris Copeland of Blairsville, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Dennis and Diane McNamara of Hollywood, FL, Robert McNamara of TX, four grandchildren, Cody, Kyle and Ashley French of Dahlonega and Katie Copeland of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A Celebration of life Service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, Mary desired that donations may be made to the Union County Lions Club in her memory.

peggy gill alexander

 

Mrs. Peggy Gill Alexander, age 90, of Mtn. View Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday Sept. 1, 2007 in the Clay County Care Center following an extended illness.  Mrs. Alexander was born on Nov. 23, 1916 in Chattanooga, TN, the daughter of the late Billy Gill.  She had made her home in Blairsville for the past seven years, moving here from Tampa, FL.  Before her retirement. She was employed with Ferman Chevrolet for over fifty years.  Peggy was a kind and loving lady and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.  Mrs. Alexander was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Alexander are one foster sister, Rev. Vikki and Tom McVay of Blairsville, five nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

A Celebration of life Service will be held at a later date with interment following in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Zion Methodist Church in Mrs. Alexander’s memory.

mary lynn pyburnn

 

Mrs. Mary Lynn Pyburn, age 75, of Hidden Acres Rd., Blairsville passed away on Monday, Aug. 27, 2007 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Pyburn was born on Feb. 6, 1932 in Shreveport, LA, the daughter of the late Sidney Matthews and the late Allie Youngblood Matthews.  She attended Williams Woods College, Fulton, MO and Centenary College, Shreveport, LA, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.  Mary Lynn loved life and she loved the outdoors.  She was an active member of the Appalachian Bridge Club and the Red Hat Association.  She had been an avid tennis player, was a certified scuba diver, loved camping, sailing and playing bridge and motorcycle riding with her husband.  Mary Lynn was an award winning realtor in Miami, FL, and she co-founded Pyburn Realty, Inc., being active for twenty years in that business.  Mrs. Pyburn was a member of the Coosa United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Pyburn are her loving husband of fifty four years, Davis Pyburn of Blairsville, two sons and daughters-in-law, Davis and Lynda Pyburn III of Cordova, TN, Bruce and Leah Pyburn of Longwood, FL, one daughter and son-in-law, Laura (Miller) and Rick Edwards of Marietta, GA, one sister, Elizabeth Ray of Austin, TX, five grandchildren, Chad, Hayley and Briana Pyburn, Rachel and Logan Miller, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007 at 11:00 am from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Katie Strals officiating.  Special music was presented by Nancy Teryl and James Stephens.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Jere, Richard, Jack, Dave, Bruce and Chad Pyburn.  Interment followed in the Coosa United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Those desiring may send contributions to the American Heart Association in Mrs. Pyburn’s memory.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-8 pm.

cecil derreberry

 

Mr. Cecil Derreberry, age 73 of Cecil Collins Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Friday August 31, 2007 from his home following a brief illness.  Mr. Derreberry was born on May 22, 1934 in Macon County, NC, the son of the late Cross Derreberry and the late Beulah Byrd Derreberry.  He was a veteran of the US Air Force of the Korean War.  Mr. Derreberry was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving Mr. Derreberry are his wife, Ann Derreberry of Blairsville, three daughters and son-in-laws, Lori and Mike Mills of Havelock, NC, Julie and Brad Taylor of Helen, GA, Jane and James Simpson of Athens ME, one son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Tammy Derreberry of Young Harris, one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Mozelle Derreberry of highlands,  NC, three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Edna Newman of Shelby, NC, Bertha and Dale Kilpatrick of marble, NC, Hattie and Don Deaton of Shelby, NC, seven grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday Sept. 1, 2007 at 2 pm from Faith Baptist Church with the Richard Helms officiating.  Special music will be presented by Heidi Sosebee and Tracy Edwards.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Mike Mills, Brad Taylor, James Simpson, Cecil Hughes Rick Hurd and Tony Abbott.  Interment will follow in the Henderson Cemetery.  The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6-8pm.

gary “yogi” Lee

 

Mr. Gary “Yogi” Lee, age 48 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, August 31, 2007 at his residence.

Mr. Lee was born Sunday, May 24, 1959 in Towns County, Georgia to Frances Cantrell Lee of Blairsville and the late Arlon John Lee.  He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Robert Sosebee.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: wife, Lisa Lee, son, Garry Nolan Lee and brother, Michael lee all of Blairsville, GA.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 2, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. from the Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Youngblood and Rev. Leon Henderson officiating.  Music was provided by David Chatham and Spirit Led.  Interment was in Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: B.L. Anderson, Joe Dyer, Jeremy Henderson, Neal Rusk, Kenny Rogers, Rex Taylor, James Lunsford and Leonard Sosebee.

opal lance anderson poteete

 

Opal lance Anderson Poteete, age 95, of Marietta died Saturday, September 1, 2007.  She was a riveter at Bell Bomber during WWII, retired from Rich’s in downtown Atlanta, and was a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Ms. Poteete was born in Blairsville March 18, 1912, to Thomas and Mary lance.  She attended Mt. Zion School.  Ms. Poteete married John Anderson July 9, 1946.  They had one daughter, Patricia Ann.  After Mr. Anderson passed away in 1960, she and Patricia moved from Akron, Ohio back to Blairsville and then moved to Marietta in 1961.  ms. Poteete later married Lloyd Poteete.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia Ann Glore and her husband Johnny of Marietta one perfect grandson, Michael Allen and his wife Vivian of Newnan, two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Thaddeus of Newnan, one sister, Maude DeWeese of Fannin County, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday, September 3, 11 AM, at Davis-Struempf Chapel, Austell, with Rev. Eddie Barton officiating.  Burial were in Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery, Blairsville, GA at 3 PM.  IN lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Concord Baptist Church, 4494 Floyd Rd, Mableton, GA 30126.
