katie leigh byrd

 

Ms. Katie Leigh Byrd, age 26, of Blairsville, GA, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Monday, August 28, 2006.

Ms. Byrd was born Monday, June 30, 1980 in Jefferson County, MS.  Katie attended Blairsville Church of the Nazarene, and had lived most of her life in Blairsville.  She loved to laugh, loved art, painting, and music.  Katie had attended Union County High School, where she had been a member of the Union County High School Band.  Katie was a loving wife and mother.  Her sister, Korie Byrd, passed away in 1999.

Survivors include her husband, Victor Lopez; her son, Victor Manuel Lopez, both of Blairsville; mother and father, Julia & Thomas Lynch of Young Harris, GA; sister, Kittie Lea Byrd of Atlanta, GA, and sister, Kenna Leah Mata of Young Harris; and other family and friends, several aunts, uncles nieces, nephews also survive.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Wednesday, August 30.  Private graveside services were held.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to an account at Appalachian Community Bank, attention Lesa Byrd.

hazel allene poteete medford

 

Hazel Allene Poteete Medford, age 89, of Marietta, GA died August 29, 2006.  She was born on August 25, 1917 to the late Dillard M. and Lillie A. Burns Poteete of Union County, GA.

Mrs. Medford left Union County when she was 7 years old and moved to Marietta, GA where she married the late James Floyd “Jake” Medford.  She love the North Georgia mountains and loved going back to Union County when possible.  She was an avid gardener, a loving mother, grandmother, and sister.  She was a member of the Noonday Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James Alvin and Ruth A. Medford of Canton; granddaughter, Bonnie Allene Medford of Canton; sister, Janette Westmoreland of Kennesaw; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on September 1, 2006 from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home, Canton, GA with Rev. Cliff Duvall and Rev. Joey Dubois officiating. Interment followed in the Noonday Baptist Church Cemetery, Marietta, GA.

barbara jones wheeler

 

Mrs. Barbara Jones Wheeler, age 66, of Green Ln. Blairsville, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Wheeler was born on August 18, 1940 in Parkin, Arkansas.  The daughter of the late James Thomas and the late Florence Jenkins Thomas.  She was raised in Ft. Meade, FL.  She retired from Cargill Industries Phosphate Mine in 1990 and moved to the mountains to be with her family.  She was preceded in death by her parents and, also a brother who died in Vietnam, Harlan Harris.  Mrs. Wheeler was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Wheeler are three daughters and a son, Cheryl and Keith Weaver of Blairsville, George and Connie Walker of Blairsville, Rayannette Wheeler of Blairsville, Melissa Wheeler of Blairsville; one brother, Harold Harris of Avon Park, FL; four grandchildren, Amber and Brent Laney, James and Sara Weaver, all of Blairsville, Chris and David Wheeler of Michigan; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Anderson, Nicole Weaver, Dylan Weaver, and Briana Allen all of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 7 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon Henderson, Rev. Jeremy Henderson, and Rev. Jim Crews officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Wheeler’s memory.

mack r. dunkle

 

Mr. Mack R. Dunkle of Emerine Rd. Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Dunkle was born on May 2, 1926 in Jersey Shore, PA.  The son of the late George Warfield Dunkle and the late Faith Richards Dunkle.  A World War II Navy veteran, he served as a cook with the Seabees, feeding the military construction crews who helped to liberate the Philippines.  Working in steamy jungles during the monsoon, he barely survived a case of malaria.  He was medically discharged in 1946.  For 25 years, he was a U.S. city postman in Jersey Shore.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Seni Marie Eyer in 1985.  Mr. Dunkle was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Surviving Mr. Dunkle are his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Donna June Reitzel Dunkle; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Freda Dunkle of Blairsville, Terry and Mary Dunkle of Danbury, CT; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Eldon Arndt of Blairsville, Denise and Jerry Booth of Williamsport, PA; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty Lou and Clair Robinson; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Gladys Dunkle, Donald all of Jersey Shores, IN; Marilyn Dunkle of KY; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services will be held on Friday September 1, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the Tombs Run Cemetery in Jersey Shores, PA with the Rev. Richard Jones officiating.  IN lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Tract League at www.tractleague.com in Mr. Dunkle’s memory.

amos eugene porter

 

Mr. Amos Eugene Porter, age 67, of Timber Ridge Rd. Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2006 following an extended illness.  Mr. Porter was born on August 14, 1939 in Cherokee County, GA.  The son of the late Otto Perry Porter and the late Lula Bell Brock Porter.  He was a veteran of the US Army.  He retired from the Commercial Carriers Car Haulers.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Nell Taylor Porter in 2005.  Mr. Porter was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Porter are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Perry Porter of Kennesaw, GA, Perry and Jan Porter of Marietta; two daughters and son-in-laws, Dana and Bobby Nelson of Blairsville, Tina and Robert Burnette of Blairsvill; four grandchildren, Seth and Sarabeth Nelson, Cheyenne, Ashlyn, and Sierra Burnette, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 4, 2006 at 11 a.m. from the Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Chad Underwood officiating.  Special music was presented by Paul Porter and Jonathan Adams.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, David Taylor, Matthew Taylor, William Lee, John John Jones, Vester Dills, Vernon Patterson, and jack Nelson.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

harold geoge kieley

 

Mr. Harold George Kieley, age 87, of Booger Hollow CA, passed away on Monday August 28, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Kieley was born on December 4, 1918 in Pelham, NY.  The son of the late John Joseph Kieley II.  He owned and operated a Taxi and Limo service for many years.  He was an avid Bridge Player.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Genivieve Elliott Kieley and by a son, Harold Kieley Jr.

Surviving Mr. Kieley are one son and daughter-in-law, John J. and Candace Kieley of Poway, CA; two sisters, Marjory Catherin DesRosier of Craryville, NY, Jaclyn Mathilda Hoffman of Flushing, MI; six grandchildren, J.J. Kieley IV of Rohnert Park, CA, James Kieley of Chandler, AZ, Jeffrey Kieley of Monterey, CA, Michael Kieley, Mare Kieley, and Michelle Farias all of Tijuana, MX; eight great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial services was held on Saturday September 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. from his residence at 2739 Booger Hollow Connector with Pastor Dave Wesche officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Canine Companions For Independence, Southwest Region, P.O. Box 45568, Oceanside, CA, 92052 in Mr. Kieley’s memory.

stella dennin

 

Mrs. Stella Denning, age 69, of laurel Mtn. Estates Blvd. passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at her home following a brief illness.  Mrs. Denning was born on December 12, 1936 in Ridgebury, NY.  The daughter of Mary Rhein Denning and the late George Rhein.  She retired from the Avon Company after thirty five years of service.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Denning in 2005 and by a daughter, Brenda Torres in 2003.  She had made her home in Blairsville for the past seventeen years, moving here from New York.  Mrs. Denning was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving Mrs. Denning are one daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Fred Newkirk of Guilford, NY; mother, Mary Rhein of Goshen, NY; one brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Marie Rhein of Liberty, NY; four grandchildren, Maria Roberts of Toccoa, GA, Steven Heater of Guilford, NY, Katlyn Newkirk, and Fred Newkirk Jr. all of Guildford, NY; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the St. Judes Children’s Hospital in Mrs. Denning’s memory. officiating.
