Mr. Christopher Marion Fortenberry, age 37, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011 at his home.  Christopher was born on September 17, 1973 in Union County, the son of Claxton and Linda Dyer Fortenberry.  Chris was always helping people who were in need.  He was a very caring person and was always dependable.  He loved dogs and horses.  Chris attended New Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving Christopher are his parents, Claxton and Linda Fortenberry of Blairsville, two brothers and one sister-in-law, James and Karen Fortenberry of Blairsville and David Fortenberry of Blairsville, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive (sic).

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2011 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Danny White officiating.  Special music was presented by Merle Fortenberry.  The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Shawn Mashburn, Mark Dyer, Terry Collins, Joel Turner, Marty Rhodes and Don Garver.  The following gentleman served as honorary pallbearers, Chris Butler, Tracy Cook and Keith Nichols.  Interment followed in the Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m.

jon davis higginbotham

 

Jon Davis Higginbotham, Colonel, USAF (Ret.), 76, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2011.

Mr. Higginbotham graduated from UGA in 1956.  Upon graduation he entered the United States Air Force and retired in 1980 after 24-years of a distinguished and decorated career.  He started another career with NISH (National Industry for the Severely Handicapped) in 1982 as the Southeastern Regional Director.  In this position he was instrumental in the creation of career opportunities for our disabled citizens.  After 17 years with NISH, he retired and continued to promote his mission for these individuals.  Through out his life, Jon was an advocate for our veterans.

Mr. Higginbotham is survived by his wife of 54 years, Camille R Higginbotham, children Joni & Ken Hinton of Kennesaw, GA, Russ & Jean Higginbotham of Bonaire, GA, Beth & Goodwin Bryan of Watkinsville, GA and 7 grandchildren.  Also brother Clarence & Yvonne Higginbotham Jr of Bogart, GA and sister Gwen & Randy Moore of Lavonia, GA. and sister-in-law, Wanda Phillips of Young Harris, GA.

Funeral service was held at 5 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel, Blairsville, GA with visitation from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.  Internment was 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations in Jon’s name to Wounded Warrior Program or Hope House of Blairsville GA.  Charity information is available from Mountain View Funeral Home 706-745-3456.

mary katheryn jenkins

 

Mrs. Mary Katheryn Jenkins, age 64, of Mary’s Way, Blairsville GA, formerly of Covington, GA, passed away on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Jenkins was born on April 19, 1947 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late William E. Jenkins and the late Florene M. Jason Jenkins.  Mary was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order at St. Francis of Assisi.  Mary had begun H.A.N.D.S. Ministry at St. Francis where they would provide cancer survivor kits and many other civic duties they also provided such as knitting prayer shaws.  She had a huge impact on the whole community.  She was an accountant for over forty-five years and also was a caregiver to many.  She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Jerrold Jenkins and her stepfather, Adrian Nielson.  Mrs. Jenkins was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Surviving Mrs. Jenkins are one daughter and son-in-law, Jaime and Brian Morrell of Monticello, GA, one son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Shelly Surber of Porter, IN, six grandchildren, Drake Belt, Roby and Madison Surber, Tyler Bo, Paiton and Pailyn Morrell, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A funeral mass was held on Monday, Sept. 5, 2011 at 10 a.m. from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Liem Ngugen officiating.  Special music was presented by Ron Gaucher.  The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Gerry Gerbig, Jonathon Jenkins, O.J. Reiss, Chris Braun, Ralph Kwiatkowski and Patrick Swayne.  Interment followed in St. Claire’s Haven.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m. with a Franciscan Wake being held at 7 p.m.
