Mr.
Edward
Sylvanus Towery, age 74, of Mitchell Dr., Blairsville, GA passed away
on
Friday, September 4, 2009 at his residence following an extended
illness.
Mr.
Towery was born in Blairsville, GA, on June 6, 1935, to
the late Marcus Lihu Towery and Lula Belle Clark Towery.
He was preceded in death by three brothers,
Jerry Prescott (JP) Towery, Rev. Mark (Junior) Towery, and Ray Towery;
two
sisters, Opal Towery and Etta Mae Jones.
He served in the US army, was a lifetime member of the D.A.V., a
member
of the Young Cane Masonic Lodge No. 597, F. & A.M., and a member of
the
Choestoe Baptist Church. He owned and
operated several businesses after returning to Blairsville in 1971, and retired from Arbor Acres Farm Inc. in
1995.
Surviving Mr.
Towery are his wife of 46 years, (June 15, 1963) Miriam Housley Towery
of the
home; one brother & sister-in-law, Baxter & Diantha Towery of
Yorkille,(sic) GA; several nieces & nephews, and other relatives
and
friends.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 2 PM from the Chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Potts officiating.
Music was provided by Robbie Jones.
The following gentlemen served as pallbearers Blair Housley,
B.B.
Housley, Danny Sullivan, Jimmy Towery, Baxter Towery and Ron Towery. The following were honorary pallbearers
Dennis Hamby, Ronnie Odom, Rev. Ken Zollinger, Robbie Lou Jones,
Angelia
Transue, Rev. Mark Jones, Danny Towery, Joey Towery and Victor Towery. Interment
was in Union Memory Gardens with
members of The North Georgia Honor Guard conducting Military Honors.

Mrs.
Viola
Harriett Klopstein age 94 of Five Forks Drive Murphy, NC, and also a
resident
of Union County Nursing Home passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 in
the Union
General Hospital following a brief illness.
Mrs. Klopstein was born on Oct. 20, 1914 in Brooklyn, NY, the
daughter
of the late Rufus Hatch and the late Christine Tess Hatch.
Viola was an excellent seamstress and a
wonderful cook. She was known at the
nursing home as the “hat lady”. She was
a loving mother and grammi. Viola was of
the Lutheran faith.
Surviving Mrs.
Klopstein are one daughter, Gloria Micheals and her companion, Rick
Mishak of
Murphy, NC, one son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Cheryl Klopstein of
San
Diego, CA, four grandchildren, Cindy Barrett/Bagon and husband Michael,
Skip
and Maggie Barrett, Lisa and James Crowell and Carl Klopstein, five
great
grandchildren, Christine Barrett, Caitlin Barrett/Bagon, Nicole
Barrett, Dylan
and Ryan Crowell, many other relatives and friends also survive.
No services
are planned at this time. In lieu of
flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to
the
Union County Nursing Home in memory of Mrs. Klopstein.

Mr.
Marshall
Kirkland age 79 of Blue Ridge Hwy., Blairsville passed away on
Wednesday, Sept.
2, 2009 in the Kindred Hospital in Atlanta following an extended
illness. Mr. Kirkland was born on June 16,
1930 in
Union County, the son of the late Samuel Kirkland and the late Aileen
Nations
Kirkland. Marshall was a veteran of the
US Army of the Korean and Vietnam Wars with over twenty-one years of
service. He was a member of the American
Legion, VFW, the North GA. Honor Guard and Dooley Masonic Lodge
F&AM. He was a loving husband, father,
grandfather
and great grandfather. He was preceded
in death by two sons, Keith and John Kirkland and by two sisters,
Mildred
Ledford and Evelyn Matheson. Mr.
Kirkland was a member of Youngstown Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr.
Kirkland are his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Juanita Hutchins
Kirkland of
Blairsville, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gina and Franky
Davidson of
Blairsville, Sharon and Charles Kidd of Blairsville, Missie Kirkland of
Blairsville, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Waymond and Frances
Kirkland of
Cartersville, Sammy and Madeline Kirkland of MI, two daughters-in-law,
Lora
Kirkland and Fran Kirkland both of Blairsville, five grandchildren,
Kandi
Collins, Casey Stuart, Kayla Plott, Drake Kirkland and Carli Kidd, many
other
relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday Sept. 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the
Mountain View
Chapel with the Rev. Jonathon Hood and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating. Special music was presented by Rhonda Hood
and Kelley Brewer. The following gentlemen
served as pallbearers, Randall and Dean Kirkland, Ronnie, Kenny,
Dwayne,
Michael and Charles Wayne Ledford and Mike Morgan.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were members
of the American Legion, VFW and North GA. Honor Guard.
Interment followed in the Antioch Baptist
Church Cemetery. The family met with
friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Paul
Clyde Walton, 20, passed away suddenly on February 11, 2009. He was a lifelong resident of both Union and
Towns County. He was born in Gainesville,
GA, on September 7, 1988. He was
preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Paul and Geneva
Nicholson; and
paternal grandparents Bettye Jo Romeo and Robert Walton.
He had many
friends in both Blairsville and Towns County.
He was an avid baseball and football player.
He received 28 trophies and many awards in
baseball, football, and track. He was
called “Goldberg” by his football team.
Paul loved motorcycles, fishing, all sports, being with his
friends and
playing with his two nephews and niece.
Paul never met a stranger. He was
a lifelong friend for all he met. He was
a gentle, good man that would help and defend all of us.
He is
survived by his mother, Kathy Walton, of Albany, LA; father, Clyde
Walton, of
North Port, FL; sister and brother-in-aw Kourtney and Robbie Stuart of
Mineral
Bluff; sister and brother-in-aw Brittany and Chris Heaton of Mineral
bluff;
niece Kelsey Stuart; nephews Chase and Brayden Stuart.
Paul, you
will be missed by and loved with all our hearts and souls.
I love you, “Little Paul”.

Mr. Donal
Arthur Jordan age 89 of Ivy Log Rd., Blairsville passed away on Sunday,
Sept.
6, 2009 at his home following an extended illness.
Mr. Jordan was born on Nov. 27, 1922 in
Marion, SC, the son of the late Charles Jordan and the late Bessie
Floud
Jordan. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Barbara Jordan Beasley in 2000.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great
grandfather. Mr. Jordan was a member of
the Seventh Day
Adventist Church.
Surviving Mr.
Jordan are his loving wife Callie Jordan of Blairsville, four sons and
three
daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Barbara Jordan of Blairsville, Arthur
Jordan of
Blairsville, Donald and Debbie Jordan of Blairsville, Tony and Kim
Jordan of
Blairsville, nephew, Herbert Leroy and Natalie Jordan of Monks Corner,
SC, six
grandchildren, Robert, Regina, Tonya and Rachel Jordan, Julia and
Lowell
Beasley, four great grandchildren, Robert Curtis Jordan, Tara Nolte,
Ethan
Nolte and Keanan Price, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Lloyd
J. Tanner, age 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, August
31, 2009,
at his home.
Mr.
Tanner was a native of Fannin County, Georgia. He
was born on Wednesday, January 11, 1922,
and was the son of the late John Andrew Tanner and Cannie Cook Tanner. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War
II. Mr. Tanner had been preceded in
death by his wife, Ellene Black Tanner; a daughter, Ludy Mae Tanner;
one
brother and four sisters.
Surviving family
members include four daughters: Violet Taylor of Blue Ridge, Georgia;
Tutie
Donaldson and her husband, Bill, of Blairsville; Louise Hughes and her
husband,
Avery, of Blairsville; and Eloise Millsaps and her husband, Gerald, of
Blairsville; two sons: J.L. Tanner and his wife, Carolyn, of
Blairsville; Glenn
Tanner and his wife Patsy, of Braselton; eleven grandchildren and ten
great grandchildren
also survive, along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at 2 p.m., from the
chapel of
Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Stacy Dyer, Rev. Bryan Mason, Rev.
Jimmy
Rogers, and Rev. Jeff Deavers officiating.
The eulogy was presented by Dr. Don Pruitt.
Special music was by Julie Payne, Kelly
Helton, and Martha Davenport. The
following gentlemen served as pallbearers:
Keith Donaldson, Douglas Tanner, Richard Tanner, Kevin Hughes,
Scott
Hughes, Derrick Hughes, and Leonard Walker.
Burial was in Coopers Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches. Visitation at the funeral home was on
Tuesday, with the family especially meeting with friends from 6 until 9
p.m. on
Tuesday evening.

Mr.
Francis
Joseph (Frank) Mayhew age 85 of Doc Jones Rd., Blairsville passed away
on
Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 in the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home following an
extended illness. Mr. Mayhew was born on
Feb. 4, 1924 in Boston, MA, the son of the late Frank Mayhew and the
late
Margaret McDonald Mayhew. He was a
veteran of the US Navy Submarine Service of WWII. He
was a member of the Knights of Columbus,
the VFW and the American Legion. Frank
was involved in five war patrols in the Pacific Theater.
He was dedicated to his church and was
involved in many functions. He was
preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Montani and a granddaughter,
Kristen
Piatt. Frank was a member of St. Francis
of Assisi Catholic Church.
Surviving Mr.
Mayhew are his loving wife of sixty-four years, Mildred Silva Mayhew of
Blairsville, two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Steven Rice of
Blairsville, Frances and Roger Piatt of Sarasota, FL, one brother,
Frederick
Mayhew of Palm Bay, FL, nine grandchildren, eighteen great
grandchildren, one
great-great grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. from St.
Francis of
Assisi Catholic Church with Father Richard Wise officiating. Special music was presented by Bob and Jean
Hiler. Interment followed in St. Clare’s
Columbarium. In lieu of flowers if you

Mr.
Wilbur
Chilcote age 88 of Cozy Cove Rd., Blairsville land also of Naples, FL,
passed
away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 in the Union General Hospital
following a
brief illness. Mr. Chilcote was born on
June 25, 1921 in Mapleton Depot, PA, the son of the late Clyde Chilcote
and the
late Ruth Stephie Chilcote. Wilbur was
one of the founders of Amtrak for over forty-one years.
Before Amtrak he was with Penn Central for
several years. He was known by many,
especially by his wife Mary as “Mr. Amtrak”.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great
grandfather. He was preceded in death by a
son, Robert
Chilcote. Mr. Chilcote was a member of
First Baptist Church of Blairsville and also of North Naples Baptist
Church.
Surviving Mr.
Chilcote are his loving wife of fourteen years, Mary Parker Chilcote of
Blairsville and Naples, FL, two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and
Larry
Nelson, Linda and Harry manning all of Baltimore, MD, six step
children,
Deborah and Angelo Romano of Orlando, FL, Jacalynn and Bill lacy of
Bennett,
CO, Jerry G. Hooker of Greely, CO, Bradley and Patti Hooker of Greemup,
(sic)
IL, William and Tina Hooker of aurora, CO, Laura and Jeff Davison of
Toledo,
IL, adopted child, Dottie and Bubba Butera of Cape Coral, FL, seventeen
grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, many other relatives and
