mr. clifford keith jackson

 

Mr. Clifford Keith Jackson, age 90 of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2005 at North East Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia.

Mr. Jackson was born Friday, September 18, 1914 in Madison County, Georgia, to the late William M. Jackson and Nancy Fields Jackson.  He was a member and deacon of Bethlehem Baptist Church and a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, attaining the rank of Sergeant.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Carver Jackson and by eleven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Jackie and Larry Caldwell of Suwanee, Georgia; granddaughter and husband, Clarissa and Troy Bradham of Dunwoody, Georgia; great-grandchildren, Journey, Luke and Levi Bradham, all of Dunwoody, Georgia; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with the Rev. Vernon Davenport and Rev. Cotton Harris officiating.  Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens.  Serving as pallbearers were: David Cox, Lewis Henderson, Albert Davenport, Darron Nichols, Ronnie McDonald, Hoyt Cunningham and Jerry Martin.  Military graveside honors will be conducted by the North Georgia Honor Guard.

mrs. maggie fox carroll

 

Born Margaret Ann Fox on February 27, 1942, in Blairsville, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Royal Glenn Fox and Ella Mae Scruggs Fox.  She was a 21-year employee at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, from which she retired as a Patient Care Tech in 2002, due to illness.  She chose that level because it gave her the maximum interaction with patients.  She was active in volunteer work at the homeless shelter, battered women’s shelter, and in the relief efforts for Hurricane Hugo, and also in many other community service functions for ARMC.  She had lived in the Athens area since 1963.

Since April 2002, Maggie had lived in the loving care of Athens Regional Medical Center, Northeast Georgia Cancer Care, and her beloved husband Don.  She passed away at her home in Madison County on September 6, 2005.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Leigha Howard of Canton.  Survivors in addition to her extended family at ARMC, her husband, Don Carroll, of Hull, Georgia; daughter, Deborah Lynn Puffer of Tucson, Arizona; brothers: Glenn, Morris, Marcus and Michael Fox; sister, Mable Kienel, Marilyn Howard, and Marjorie Manous, all of Cherokee County, Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews; and also special friends, Talmadge and Ramona Booth and Sara Moore.

Active pallbearers were Travis Kienel, Kevin White, Brett Manous, Ethan Manous, Hank David, and Brian Williams.  Honorary pallbearers were her brothers: Glenn, Morris, Marcus and Michael Fox; Talmadge Booth and LaVaughn Cooper.  Officiating was Brian Williams, Chaplain of Athens Regional Medical Center and Rev. Walter D. Edwards, of Ocala, Florida.

Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 9, 2005 in the Chapel at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home EAST.  Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens, Georgia.

mr. joffre “jock” crawford

 

Mr. Joffre “Jock” Crawford, age 86, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at Union General Hospital.  Mr. Crawford was born Saturday, September 28, 1918 in Blairsville, GA to the late George Crawford and the late Mary Belle Walker Crawford.  Mr. Crawford was a member of the Coosa United Methodist Church, a member of Allegheny Lodge #114 F&AM for over 50 years and was a WWII Army veteran.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Crawford and sister, Lorena Penland O’Neil.

Survivors include: wife, Marian Elizabeth Crawford of Blairsville, GA; son, Joffre Crawford of Detroit, MI; step daughter, Marian Dodge of Savannah, GA; sister, Sharon Jones of Blairsville, GA; brother, Dormas Crawford of Detroit, MI; sister LaVon Butt of Blairsville, GA; brother, Dan Crawford of Blairsville, GA; sister, Delphia Millar of Huntington Beach, CA; granddaughter, Jacquelin Crawford; granddaughter, Mary Beth Baskin of Marietta, GA; grandson, Colin Meaders of Marietta, GA; granddaughter, Kathryn McDougall of Columbia, SC; grandson, George Meaders of Jasper, GA; great grandson, Tabor Martin and great granddaughter, Mary Kathryn Martin, both of Marietta, GA.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens with graveside rites by the Allegheny Lodge #114 F&AM.  Serving as pallbearers Colin Meaders, George Meaders, Mickey Jones, Terry Jones, Justin Jones and Tabor Martin.  Honorary pallbearers were David Pickman, Jerry Penland and Clark Crawford.

mrs. anita verona sorrelles

 

Mrs. Anita Verona Sorrelles, age 76, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2005 at her home.

Mrs. Sorrelles was born Sunday, December 16, 1928 in Lake Worth, FL to the late Carl Cole and Minnie Onita Burnett (Hainey).  She moved to this area in 1999 from Chamblee, GA.  Mrs. Sorrelles was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Lee Sorrells.

Survivors include: daughter, Brenda Diane Sorrelles of Blairsville, GA; son, Bruce Lee Sorrelles; daughter, Cheryl D. Mandus; and son, Bryan Alan Sorrelles.

kathryn mcafee puett

 

Kathryn McAfee Puett, 83, of Hiawassee, GA, died Thursday, September 1, 2005 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.

She was born Tuesday, October 4, 1921 in Union County, Georgia, to the late Floyd W. McAfee and Ethel Dyer McAfee.  She was the wife of the late Garnett McAfee.  Kathryn was a member of Old Brasstown Baptist Church and was a graduate of Young Harris Collefe.  She taught at Brasstown School and first grade at Young Harris Elementary School before retiring with 32 years in the Towns County School System.

Surviving are her daughewr & son-in-law, Jackie & Dick Hidgon of Andrews, NC; grandsons, John R. Higdon and Him H. Higdon, both of Andrews, NC; great-grandsons, Brady Higdon and Alex Higdon both of Andrews, NC; sisters-in-law, Loise McAfee of Blairsville, GA, Nora Lea Puett Westmoreland of Hiawassee, GA, Willa Mae Puett of Hiawassee, GA, Gladys Puett of Young Harris, GA; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Old Brasstown Church, Sunday, September 4, 2005 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ricky Rogers and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Ricky McAfee, Jim McAfee, Sean McAfee Akins, Terry Roberts, Marty Roberts and Steve Drake.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Old Brasstown Baptist Church Building Fund.

mr. leland sampson denning

 

Mr. Leland Sampson Denning, age 89, of Beale Court Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Denning was born on Feb. 21, 1916 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Folliott Denning and the late Lilla May Coleman Denning.  He had retired from the US Navy as Commander with over twenty-one years of service and had served in WWII.  He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the retired Officers Assc., and was a member of the Amateur Radio Assc.  He was preceded in death by two wives, Marie Rita Denning in 1986 and by Mary Ellen Denning in 2001.  Mr. Denning was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving Mr. Denning are his loving wife, Stella Rhein Denning of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Visitation at the funeral home was held on Sunday, September 11, 2005 from 7-9 p.m. with interment following in the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, with Military Honors by the US Navy.

mr. thomas dewey duckworth sr.

 

Mr. Thomas Dewey Duckworth Sr., age 60, of Fairview Trail, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following a sudden illness.  Mr. Duckworth was born on Nov. 8, 1944 in Union County, the son of the late Ralph Duckworth and the late Dimple Jones Duckworth.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Duckworth in July of this year.  Mr. Duckworth was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Duckworth are his wife Charolette Adams Duckworth of Blairsville, two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Randy Colwell of Blairsville, Tina and Jay Prince of Topton, NC, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas and Georgia Duckworth of Blairsville, Barney Sanders of Blairsville, two sisters, Vessie Caraballo and Kathy Sue Burrell both of Catersville, three brothers, Robert, Gordon and Jerry Duckworth all of Blairsville, Roy Duckworth of Florida, seven grandchildren, Matthew Thomas, Joshua Colwell, Josey Prince, Candance Loetcher, Haley, Megan and Breanna Duckworth, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005 at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Special music will be presented by Jimmy McKinney.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Randy Colwell, Matthew Thomas, Richard Mason, Larry Thomas, Wayne Adams and Charles Colwell.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
