Mrs. Wanda G. Conley, age 55, of Morganton, GA, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home.  Wanda was born Wednesday, February 27, 1952 in Cherokee County, NC to Buster Laney and the late Willa Nell Totherow.  She was a member of Morganton Baptist Church.  Wanda loved arts, crafts, quilting and sewing.

Survivors include: husband, Charles Conley of Morganton, GA; father & step mother, Buster & Aline Laney of the Martin Creek Community in Murphy, NC; son & daughter-in-law, Casey & Mary Conley of Blairsville, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Holli & Eric Williams of McCaysville, GA; sister, Susie Stokes of Gastonia, NC; sister, Lesa Lamberson of Lebanon, TN; brother, Mark Laney the martin Creek Community in Murphy, NC; sister, Missy Laney of Andrews, NC; grandsons, Bretton Williams, Gage Conley, Cadan Williams; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Keith Jones officiating.  Music was provided by Christine Rogers.  Interment followed in Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Steve Laney, Darrell Laney, David Laney, Eddie Farner, Dean Farner, and Gary Swanson.

robert william amacher

 

Mr. Robert William Amacher, age 85, of Dean Gap Rd., Blairsville passed away on Friday, September 14, 2007 at his home following a brief illness.  Mr. Amacher was born on December 12, 1921 in Miami, FL, the son of the late Herman Roy Amacher and the late Hilda Key Amacher.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army of WWII.  He had owned the English Ford and Studebaker Dealership in Elmira, NY for many years.  He was preceded in death by a brother, John Amacher and a sister, Kathleen Amacher.  Mr. Amacher was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving Mr. Amacher are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard and Seiko Amacher of Charlotte, NC, Joseph B. Amacher of Stuart,  FL, Gary and Sharon Amacher of Zephyrhills, FL; one daughter, Dana Kay Cassell of New Hampshire; one sister,  Margarett Mace of Enterprise, AL; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may e made to the American heart Association in Mr. Amacher’s memory.

mattie will wessie carolyn gresham wester ezell

 

Mrs. Mattie Will Wessie Carolyn Gresham Wester Ezell, age 90, of Blairsville, died Wednesday, September 5, 2007.  She owned an award-winning florist shop in Jacksonville, FL for many years.  After moving to Atlanta, she worked for JC Penny & Co.  She was an active member of Chamblee United Methodist Church and had joined Blairsville United Methodist Church after moving to Blairsville.  She was one of the first residents of Branan Lodge in Blairsville living there for 25 years, being a friend and helper to many there.  She has resided at the Union County Nursing Home for 2 years.  She is preceded in death by parents William Alfred Gresham and Matte Eursula Derden and husbands, N. Roscoe Wess Wester and Clifton S. Ezell.

She is survived by nieces and husbands, Eleanor and Jim Stanford, of Ridgecrest, CA, Ann Glenn, of Memphis, TN; nephews and wives, Will and Delores Gresham, of Summerville, TN, Marshal and Wilma Gresham, of Loganville; step-granddaughters, Linda Bell, of Blairsville, Nora Scott, of Satellite Beach, FL; stepdaughter and husband, Carol and Charles Gardiner, of Lithonia; adopted sister, Glenda Palmer, of Buford; adopted daughter and son, Gayle and Sam McEntyre, of Dunwoody; and numerous adopted grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with the Rev. Royeese Stowe officiating.  Interment was Sunday, at 3:30 p.m. in the Riverside Cemetery in Macon with Trent McEntyre officiating.

Bernhardt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

jonathan virgal “fate” hancock

 

Jonathan Virgal “Fate” Hancock, age 20, of Murphy died Monday, September 10, 2007.  He was a native of Union County, GA where he had lived until moving to Cherokee County a year ago.  He was a 2006 graduate of Union County High School.  He was presently working as a cook for Brother’s Restaurant.  He was of the Baptist faith.  His hobbies included camping, basketball, and enjoying time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his parents, Virgal and Don-Ann Coleman Hancock of Marble; a brother, Jeffrey Thomas Hancock of Murphy; half-sister, Holly Ann Coleman of Murphy; paternal grandfather, Marvin Virgal Hancock of Ellijay GA; paternal grandmother, Fay Elizabeth Payne of Blairsville, GA; maternal grandfather, Don Coleman of Murphy; maternal grandmother, Barbara Lanning Coleman; nephew, Elias Tefft of Murphy; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2007 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Dallas Crowder officiating.  The family received friends from 3-5:45 Friday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.

george clayton buchanan

 

Mr. George Clayton Buchanan, age 80, of Hicks Gap Rd., Blairsville passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2007 in the Piedmont Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Buchanan was born on April 6, 1927 in Jackson County, NC, the son of the late James Buchanan and the late Elba Brooks Buchanan.  He retired in 1985 from the General Motors Lakewood Plant after over thirty-two years of service.  George was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved the great outdoors.  He also enjoyed watching funny movies.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  George was preceded in death by a brother, Floy Ray Buchanan who was killed in battle in WWII in 1941.  Mr. Buchanan was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Buchanan are his loving wife and best friend of fifty-four years, Hazel Harkins Buchanan of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Lois Buchanan of Forsyth, GA; five sisters, Azilee Buchanan of Marietta, Annie Dee Harmon of Franklin, NC, Elizabeth (Maggie) Cabe, Mary Moore and Roberta Crawford all of Sylva, NC; three grandchildren, Rachel Miley, Jonathan and Austin Miley; four great-grandchildren,  Jasmine, Mathew and Jessie Miley, Arwen Buchanan; one great-great-grandchild, Camron Miley; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 16, 2007 from Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Chad Underwood and Rev. Worth Chastain officiating.  Special music was presented by Church Choir and Robin Waldroop.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Austin Buchanan, Mathew Miley, Greg Crawford, Randy Cabe, Jacob Jordan Grizzle, Ray Crawford and Jonathan Buchanan.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Ms. Opal L. Sullivan, age 90, of Liberty Church Rd., Blairsville passed away on Monday, September 10, 2007 in the Union County Nursing Home following a brief illness.  Ms. Sullivan was born on August 31, 1917 in Union County, the daughter of the late William J. Sullivan and the late Sara Hood Sullivan.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She retired in 2003 with over sixty years of service as an office manager with Hiawassee Hardware in Towns County.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Lynn Clark in 1994.  Ms. Sullivan was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.

Surviving Ms. Sullivan are two sisters,  Mildred Eaton of Blairsville, Bobbie Lowenthal of Newnan, GA; nieces and nephews, Jesse and Mary Collins of Blairsville, Jim Clark of Blairsville, Carl and Kay Lowenthal, Lynn Black of palmetto, GA; ten grand-nieces and nephews; nine great-great-nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ken Zollinger and Dr. Troy Acree officiating.  Special music was presented by Rita Hooper and Jeanie Pyle.  Interment followed in the Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Mr. Gordon B. Payne, age 81, of Blairsville, GA passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Mr. Payne was born Friday, September 10, 1926 in Union County, GA to the late Charles Monroe and Virginia Ross Payne.  He was a member and Deacon of new Union Baptist Church and member and Past master of Young Cane Masonic Lodge #597 F & AM.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Cain and a brother, George Payne.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Payne, of Blairsville; sons, Donald B. Payne of Blairsville; Brian K. Payne of Mineral Bluff, GA; daughters and sons-in-law,  Chearl and Jerry Ballew; Darlene and Wendell Murphy; Barbara and Tommy Rogers; Dianne and Dale Spivey; and Annette and Ron Whitmer; brother and sister-in-law, Major and Grace Payne, all of Blairsville, GA; fifteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren.  Many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Youngblood and Rev. Harrison Bradley officiating.  Music was provided by New Union Baptist Church Choir.  Interment followed in New Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites by young Cane Masonic Lodge #597 F & AM.  Pallbearers were gentlemen: Kevin Payne, Levi Payne, Jerry Ballew, Jr., Stephen Ballew, David Murphy, Derek Spivey, and Keith Payne.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Thursday, September 13th.

Mr. Bud Kelley, age 69, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, September 11,  2007 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Mr. Kelley was born Wednesday, October 13, 1937 in Union County, GA to the late Mac Kelley and the late Myrna England Kelley.  Bud was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and had worked with Blue Ridge Mountain Electric membership Corporation.  He was a member of The House of Prayer Interdenominational Church.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Kelley, and his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife, Max Patton Kelley of Blairsville; son & daughter-in-law,, Chris and Karen Kelley; son, mark Kelley; daughter 7 son-in-law,  Casey and Keith Potts, all of Blairsville; brother, Jack Kelley of Jefferson, GA; sister, Gwen Dillard of Blairsville; sister, Jo Ann Mason; sister, Judy Foster, both of Dacula, GA; sister, Melva Lynn Patton; brother, bill Kelley, both of Blairsville; sister, Peggy Scott of Dacula; grandchildren: Seth Merritt, Rebecka Merritt, Hunter Kelley, Connor Potts, and Chloe Potts,  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 14, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Music was provided by The Kelley Trio, Nelson Thomas and Phil Nichols.  Interment followed in Kelley Family Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Mike Patton, Mitch Patton, Jason Kelley, Shannon Kelley, Clint Hobbs, and Alan Patton.  The family received friends at the funeral home form 6-9, Thursday, September 13.

Mrs. Elizabeth Evans Fowler, age 89, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.  Mrs. Fowler was born Monday, October 15, 1917 in Lafayette, IN to the late Walter Evans and the late bertha Davidson Evans.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Fowler.  Mrs. Fowler had been living in Blairsville since 2003, moving here from Clearwater, FL.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Fowler and Leslie Ruffner, both of Blairsville, and granddaughters, Elizabeth Ruffner, Anne Ruffner and Dr. Paula Boyle.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

magdalena agnes houdeshel

 

Mrs. Magdalena Agnes Houdeshel, age 86, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at her home.  Mrs. Houdeshel was born Monday, February 7, 1921 in Munich, Germany to the late Joseph Schliesslhuber and the late Magdalena Schlemmer Schliesslhuber.  Mrs.  Houdeshel lost her first husband and survived several air raids during World War II.  Magdalena married George Houdeshel in Munich, Germany on March 22, 1950.  She came to America and became an American citizen soon thereafter.  She was very active in church and her children’s schools.  She lived with her husband in Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and Georgia.  She, together with her husband, managed a hotel in Virginia Beach, VA, before returning to Georgia.  They selected Blairsville for their home in 1973.  She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Union County; Friends of the Library; Union County Historical Society; OASIS; and was a Life member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment.  She enjoyed her family, many friends, wonderful neighbors, church activities, traveling, and playing cards.

Survivors include her loving husband, George; son, Peter Ludwig Gerum of Blairsville; son, George Dean Houdeshel of powder Springs, GA; grandson, Mark Gerum of Hawaii, granddaughter, Jennifer Pierce of Maryland; sister, Agnes Davis of Mississippi; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, September 22, 2007, at 2:20 p.m., at First United Methodist Church of Union County, with Rev. Ben Lewis officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to Regency Hospice, P.O. Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546.  She will be greatly missed by her family and dear friends in the United States and Germany.
