Mr.
George Garnett Bowers, age 64, of Blairsville, passed away on Sunday,
September
12, 1999 in the Union General Hospital, following an extended illness.
following a brief
illness. Born in Union County on July 17,
1935 the son
of the late Thomas L. Bowers and Laura Cavender Bowers, Mr. Bowers
joined the
army airborne on July 17, 1952 and after
his
retirement ended, he pastured many churches, which included Delisle
Mission,
Livingston Baptist Church in Gulfport, Miss, and his last church was
East Fork
Baptist Church in McComb, Miss. He also
served as principal of Frost Elementary School, and also worked for ten
years
for the Georgia Pacific chemical Company.
He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church of Blairsville.
Surviving
Mr. Bowers are his wife, Mrs. Eva Shope Bowers of Blairsville; one
daughter and
son in law, Sharon and Scott Corn of Blairsville; mother, Laura Bowers
of
Blairsville; one brother Frank Bowers of Kannapolis, NC; three sisters:
Ruth
Sauls of Carrolton, GA., Katheryn Spry of Kannapolis, NC, and Dorothy
Collinson
of Lexington, NC., many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, September 14, 1999 from the Chapel of
the
Mountain View Funeral Home with the rev. George Cline and the rev. Bill
Gowder officiating. Special music was
presented by Patsy
Davenport, Ted Neolle, Ginger Carey, Debbie and Danita Owenby. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Haskin Colwell, Loyd Voyles, Randy Shope, Shannon Bearden,
Rufus
Everett, and Tony Voyles. Interment
followed
in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms.
Martha Faye Townsend, age 81, of Branan Lodge, Blairsville, passed away
on
Thursday, September 16, 1999 in Union General Hospital following an
extended
illness. Ms. Townsend was formerly of
Young Harris, GA, before moving to Branan Lodge twelve years ago. She was born on July 17, 1918, the daughter
of the late Thomas C. McClure and the late Lelia Justus McClure. Ms. Townsend was a member of the West Union
Baptist Church of Young Harris. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Harley Townsend in 1987.
Surviving
are three sisters and one brother in law: Grovie Plott of Young Harris,
Myrt
Truelove of West Asheville, NC, Mildred and Eugene Plott of
Blairsville; one brother
and sister in law, Charles and Ruth McClure of Blairsville; sister in
law,
Hazel McClure, also of Blairsville, a number of nieces, nephews, great
and
great great nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends also
survive.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday, September 18, 1999 at 2 p.m. from the
Chapel of
Mountain View Funeral Home with the Rev. George Cline and the Rev.
Jimmy Rogers
officiating. Special music was presented
by Ulysses and Dorothy Sampson. The
following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Randy and Robby McClure,
Horace and
Hubert Plott, Andy Conley, Tommy Shook and Gerald Murray.
Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist
Church Cemetery in Young Harris.

Mrs.
Doris S. Baumgardner, age 88, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Monday,
September 13, 1999 in Union County, Georgia.
Mrs.
Baumgardner was born in Lee County, Florida, on Tuesday, December 6,
1910, a
daughter of the late Anton I. Sherman and Angus Bartley Sherman. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death
by her husband. Home Baumgardner. Mrs. Baumgardner had been living in the
Blairsville area for 39 years, coming here from Miami, Florida. She was of the Catholic faith.
Mrs. Baumgardner had been a member of the
Order of the Easter Star for over 50 years, and was at the time of her
death, a
member of the Blairsville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star,
#304.
Surviving
are her son, Homer M. Baumgardner, of Blairsville; son and daughter in
law,
Ethbert and Barbara Baumgardner of Miami Shores, Florida; three
sisters:
Cornelia Culver, of Lorida, Florida; Mary Mills, of Ft. Lauderdale,
Florida;
and Peggy Smith of Maggie Valley, North Carolina; six grandchildren and
eight
great grandchildren also survive.
Memorial
services were held Friday, September 17, 1999 from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home in Blairsville. Members of
the Blairsville Order of the Eastern Star, #304 presided over the
service. officiating.

John C. Savage, age 68, passed away September 9, 1999 at Hospice of
Wendover.
He
was a native of Union County, Georgia, son of the late George Ranson
and Norma
Caroline Poteete Savage also the grandson of Mitchell Poteete and Sarah
Margaret Cathy Poteete of Union County.
Air Force veteran of Korean conflict, graduate of parks-College
of
Aeronautical Technology at University of St. Louis, retired
self-employed steel
broker, worked many years in finance industry, past president of
Cleveland
Community Watch Association, members of Amvets, American legion Post
82,
Elizabeth Baptist Church.
Survivors
include, wife, Phyllis Sides Savage; son and daughter in law, Stephen
and Cathy
Savage, Shelby; sister, Mary Greene, Winston-Salem; sister in law, Emma
Jean
Sides, family, Shelby; nephew, Ken Sides and family, Shelby;
grandchildren and
spouse, Shannan Savage, Shelby, Chad and Nicole Bailey, Ellenboro;
great
grandchildren; C.J. and Madison Bailey, Ellenboro.
Funeral
services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Cleveland Memorial Park,
Rev. Joe
Collins.

Mr.
Robert George Bensen, age 70, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Friday,
September 10, 1999 in Union County, Georgia.
Mr.
Bensen was a native of Cuyhoga County, Ohio, and had been a part time
resident
of Blairsville, Georgia and Naples, Florida for some time.
He was a retired chairman of a large
conglomerate business.
Surviving
are his wife, Lois of Blairsville, GA, and Naples, FL; sons: Bob
Bensen, Jr.,
and Dwaine Bensen, both of Cleveland, Ohio; and Douglas Bensen, of
Portland,
Oregon; 3 grandchildren also survive.
