james wadath jones

Mr. James Wadath Jones, age 80, of Blairsville, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013, at Union General Hospital surrounded by the love of his family.

James was born in Blairsville on March 28, 1933 to the late G. Terrell & Sharon Crawford Jones in a two room shack on Blue Ridge Hwy. During his early years he lived in Michigan as his father sought work to support his family. The Jones family eventually returned to Union County and established a small country store on the corner of Kuituestia, Mulkey Gap & Blue Ridge Hwy. In 1948, The family moved to town and built a house and the 1st Jones Building just west of the square. James and many other young folk played on the square, watching movies in the "old courthouse" and sometimes climbing the clock tower (which looking back is not recommended!). Among this group were many members of the "movers & shakers" of Union County. James was educated in Union County, the graduating class of 1950 - at that time high school was completed in the 11th grade. A short stay back in Detroit for employment led to moving to Los Angeles, CA with his mother and father. In December of 1951, James enlisted in the U.S Navy for a 4 year tour and the Korean War. Immediately following boot camp in San Diego Jones was afflicted with Rheumatic Fever and a stay in a Naval Hospital. In July of 1952 he met a beautiful, dark haired girl named Kay, who was the baby sitter for his aunt. They were married December 19, 1954 in South Pasadena, CA and as a young couple endured Navy life with its long days at sea and cruises to the Orient. James was well known for his business presence on the Blairsville Square; Solicitor with Jones Insurance Agency for 17 years, Owner/ Operator of Blairsville Honda.

Although, very active in the community and many organizations James knew how to prioritize his life. First and foremost was his Lord, then the well being of his wife, sons and grandchildren. Providing excellent care for his parents, aunts and uncles as they advanced in age. He was loving, caring and fun. As a disciplinarian, it was done with love in his voice. His family and many life long friendships were his treasure. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, Allegheny Lodge #114 & Masonic Appendant bodies: Scottish Rite, York Rite and Yarrah Temple-Atlanta, 1992 President of Appalachian Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters, Colonel in the Honorable of Kentucky Colonels, Disabled American Veterans, National Rifle Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He Co-organized the Dixie Youth Baseball League where he spent years coaching the kids and umpiring. A enthusiast of motorcycles and touring, James was known to put 50K miles on a motorcycle in a single year. Having ridden through every state multiple times and also in Canada, Mexico and Nova Scotia, often riding as much as 900 miles in a day.

He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his family: loving wife of 58 years, Kathryn A. Jones; sons & daughters-in-law, Terry & Sherri Jones and Mickey & Panda Jones; grandsons, Justin Levi Jones & Jeremy Michael Jones; granddaughters, Katelyn Jones, Brittney Jones, Kala Jones McNair and her husband Thomas; aunt, Delphia Crawford Millar and uncle, Daniel Crawford.
