Mr.
Derrick Lee
Whittle age 38 of V. Addington Rd., Blairsville passed away on Sunday,
September
18, 2011 in the Erlanger Hospital following injuries received in an
automobile
accident while responding to an emergency call.
Derrick was born on April 11, 1973 in Tallahassee, FL, the son
of James
Whittle and Sharon Norsworthy Whittle. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. At the time of his death he was employed as a
Deputy with the Union County Sheriffs Department. He
was a loving husband, father and son and
was a friend to many. Derrick attended
Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving
Derrick
are his loving wife, Karen Hinnenkamp Whittle of Blairsville, one son,
Nicholas
Whittle, one daughter, Leigha Whittle both of Blairsville, parents, Jim
and Sharon
Whittle of Brasstown, NC, father-in-law, Jerry Hinnenkamp of
Blairsville,
sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Suellen and Steve Morlock of
Blairsville,
brother-in-law, David Hinnenkamp of Blairsville, cousin, Toni and Jeff
Tidwell
of Montgomery, AL, a host of law enforcement family, many other
relatives and
friends also survive.
Funeral
services were
held on Wednesday September 21, 2011 at 11 a.m. from the First Baptist
Church
with the Rev. Stacy Dyer and Minister Terry Stuart officiating. The
following
gentleman served as pallbearers, Scott Harrison, Sheriff Scott
Stephens, Scott
Deyton, Dallas Batson, Tim Woods, Chad Deyton, Johnny McCoy, Mark
Cecci, Josh
Berry, Tyler Miller, Tracey James, Lamar Dyer, Charlie Ross, Tony
Hodgkins,
Michael Davis, Rick Landress, C.J. Worden, Travis Gibson. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Union
County Sheriffs Department. Interment
followed in the Meadow View Cemetery. The family met with friends at
the
funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 – 9 p.m. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family

Dorothy Jean Pochis, age 81, of Sweet Bay Drive, Blairsville, passed
away
Monday, September 12, 2011 at her home after an extended illness. Mrs. Pochis was born, December 6, 2011, (sic)
in Tampa, FL, daughter of the late John and Violet Shaddick Broack. She was a member of ROTC at Hillsborough High.
Mrs. Pochis was preceded in death by two
sisters, Lottie Gibbons and Vivian Kitatrell. She
was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church
in Largo, FL.
Surviving
Mrs. Pochis are her husband, Frank Paul Pochis of Blairsville,
daughters and
sons-in-law, Christine and Anthony Abreu of Blairsville, GA, Deborah
and George
Attwood of Alexanderia, AL, Pamela and Geoffrey Fuller of San Antonio,
TX,
sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Fred Mumm of Bay Town, TX,
granddaughter,

Mrs.
Wanda Louise
Cook, age 64, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away suddenly on Sunday,
September 18, 2011 in Blairsville.
Wanda was
born on
Monday, September 30, 1946, in Kingston, TN, to the late Floyd Wilcoxon
and
Altha Lorene Nichols Wilcoxon. Wanda and
her husband Billy Joe had owned and operated B & W Paint and Supply
in
Blairsville for approximately 25 years. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe, in February of this
year; and
her parents.
Wanda
will be missed
by everyone who knew her, but most especially her family: sisters and
brothers-in-law, Brenda and Troy Murphy, of Douglasville, GA, and
Claudia and
Ranny Jones, of Blairsville; sister, Peggy Hyde, of Morganton, GA;
brother and
sister-in-law, Ned and JoAnn Wilcoxon, of Blairsville; many nieces,
nephews,
and friends also survive.
Funeral

Wanda were held on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at 2 p.m., in the
Chapel of
Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Jonathon Hood and Rev.
Marvin
Young officiating. Special music was
presented by Tim, Becka and Cody Hamilton, Martha Davenport, Logan Hart
and
Casey Jones. The following gentlemen
served as pallbearers: Tim Odom, Shannon Jones, Travis Jones, Buddy
Legg, Doug
Murphy, and Kevin Lunsford. Serving as

Mrs. Lois
Hughes,
age 84, of Young Harris, GA, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2011,
in
Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee, GA.
Mrs.
Hughes was born
in Blairsville on Tuesday, May 3, 1927, a daughter of the late Sherman
Bridges
and the late Lillie Collins Bridges. She
was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Blairsville. Mrs.
Hughes was a member of Zebulon Baptist
Church. For over 50 years, Mrs. Hughes
and her husband and the family have been known for making sorghum syrup
at
their mill in Young Harris. Mrs.
Hughes was also an excellent cook and
enjoyed quilting and was very good at it.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by a
grandson,
Joey Matthew Hughes; five sisters: Velva Bridges Souther, Lela Bridges
Hughes,
Joyce Bridges Hughes, Betty Bridges Rose, and Mary Bridges Brackett;
brothers:
Doyle Bridges, Loy Bridges, and Roy Bridges.
She is
survived by
and will be greatly missed by her loving family: her husband, Olin
Hughes, of
Young Harris; son, Cecil J. Hughes; daughter, Elouise Chastain; and
son, Terry
L. Hughes, all of Young Harris; sister, Charlene Griggs, of
Blairsville; eleven
grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and many friends and other
relatives
also survive.
Funeral

Mrs. Hughes were held on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at
Zebulon
Baptist Church. With Rev. Ray Potts and Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating. Special music was presented by Spirit Led,

Kathern Refner age 88, of Birdwalk Lane, Blairsville, formerly of
Adrian, MI
passed away on Sunday September 18th, 2011 in the Union County Nursing
Home
following an extended illness. Mrs.
Refner was born on Dec. 18, 1922 in Traverse City, MI, the daughter of
the late
Charles Seigel and the late Dovie Elliot Seigel. She
was preceded in death by her husband,
Richard Refner in 1998 and a daughter Cynthia Reamsnyder in 2010. Mrs. Refner was a member of Immaculate Heart
of Mary Catholic Church in Hayesville.
Surviving
Mrs.
Refner are one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jean Refner of
Adrian, MI,
three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Todd Herrick of Bay Harbor,
MI,
Kathy and Ed Cole of Blairsville, Sandy and Scott Barta of Rossford,
OH, one
sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Bud Mumy of Amarillo, TX, thirteen
grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, two great-great
grandchildren,
many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Larry
E.
Patterson, age 76, of Blairsville, passed away Thursday morning,
September 22,
2011, in Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee, Georgia.
Mr.
Patterson was
born in Blairsville, on June 29, 1935, a son of the late Arvel
Patterson and
the late Bessie Weaver Patterson. He was
a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served during the Korean War. Mr. Patterson was a member of First Baptist
Church of Blairsville; a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge, #114, F
& AM, the
Appalachian Shrine club. Besides his
parents, Larry was preceded in death by a sister, Flora Belle Burnette
King;
and three brothers: Robert E. Patterson, Dan J. Patterson, and George
Billy
Patterson.
Mr.
Patterson is
survived by and will greatly missed by his wife of 55 years: Ann Fair
Patterson, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kennetha
Patterson, of Blairsville; two sisters: Roselle Arp, of Morganton,
Georgia; and
Sarahnelle Hudson, of Marietta, Georgia; brother, Conard Patterson, of
Morganton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roeyzane and Yvonne Patterson,
of Blue
Ridge, Georgia, and Ramon Bruce and Alline Patterson, of Blairsville;
two
grandchildren, Kevin Andrew Patterson and MacKenzie Leigh Patterson. Many nieces, nephews, and many friends also
survive.

Mr. Patterson were held Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at

Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Rev. Danny Parris and Dr. Fred

years. Troy had worked with the Civilian

Corps, he was a farmer and also worked for many years at Georgia Boot. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian

Jess King
and sisters, Bertha Flowers and Artiebelle Ingram.
