madison thomas penland

 

Mr. Madison Thomas Penland, age 85, of Edgefield, SC., formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2003 in Aiken, SC., following injuries received in an automobile accident.  Mr. Penland was born on December 15, 1917 in Union County, the son of the late Thomas Moffit Penland and the late Bonnie Mae England Penland.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Erwin Penland in 1995 and by two sisters, Era Mae Penland and Lillian Gibson; and a brother, Wayman Penland.  He was a Veteran of the US Army Airborne of WWII and had retired from the military with twenty seven years of service.  After his retirement, he owned and operated a Barber Shop in Honolulu for twelve years.  Mr. Penland attended The House of Prayer Church.

Surviving Mr. Penland are his loving wife, Mae Thomas Penland of Edgefield, SC; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Trippi Penland of Falls Church, VA; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, John and Tammy Sexton of Winston Salem, NC., Tim and Judy Sexton of Richmond, VA; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Eleanor Penland of Atlanta; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Allie Rose and Royce Buice of Cumming, Verlan and Eldo Harkins of Suches; two grandchildren, David and T.R. Penland; three step-grandchildren, Brett, Matthew and Sarah Sexton; many other relatives and friends

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 28, 2003 from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Honaker and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Nelson and Mildred LeCroy.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Herbert Dyer, Kenneth Dyer, Richard Coker, F.C. Collins, Robert Coker, Doug Collins, Matthew and Brett Sexton.  Interment followed in the Bethel Cemetery with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting military honors.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of the arrangements.

MR. paul e. dowell

 

Mr. Paul E. Dowell, age 64, of Atlanta, GA formerly of Blairsville, GA passed away Thursday, September 25, 2003 in Atlanta.

Mr. Dowell was born in Bristol, TN on Friday, February 3, 1939, a son of the late Joe Dowell and Louise Johnson Dowell.  He was a retired platemaker for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, and was a member of Winters Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his son, Terry Dowell of Morganton, GA; a daughter, Michelle Harrison of Buford, GA; brothers: Bill Dowell of Toccoa, GA, Lane Dowell of Bristol, TN, Charles Dowell of Pennsylvania, James Dowell of Bristol, TN, and Ronnie Gosnell of Atlanta, GA; sister, Rosie Williams of Atlanta, GA; 5 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 29, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Luther Thomas officiating.  Special music was presented by Rev. Thomas.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Terry Dowell, Stan Dowell, Richmon Lance, Frank Burnette, Don Cook, and Chris Harrison.  Interment was in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for arrangements.
