hazel bessie spiva white

 

Mrs. Hazel Bessie Spiva White, age 85, of Spiva Cove Rd., Blairsville passed away on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mrs. White was born on July 2, 1917 in Eaton, CO, the daughter of the late Ben Spiva and the late Lillie Shuler Spiva.  She loved hunting, fishing and the great outdoors.  She was preceded in death by three sons; Gary White in 1997, Darrell White in 1962, and Bud White in 1984.  Mrs. White was a member of the Blairsville Church of Christ.

Surviving Mrs. White are her loving husband of sixty four years, Ed White of Blairsville; two brothers, Vernon Spiva of Elk Grove, CA, and Walter Spiva of Blairsville; one sister, Dorothy Martin of Elk Grove, CA; four grandchildren, Tracy White of Blairsville, Tammy White of Greely, CO, Vance White of Lander, WY, and Eric White of Ft. Collins, CO; nine great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. from the Blairsville Church of Christ with Minister Terry Stuart officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers; Jimmy Spiva, Michael Spiva, Eddie Spiva, Curtis Colwell, Tom Colwell and Brian Kelley.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were; David Bryant, Doug Colwell, Neal Kelley, John Aylor, Carlton Colwell, and John Kuberek.  Interment followed in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

robert “bob” colwell

 

Mr. Robert “Bob” Colwell, age 73, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passes away Friday, September 27, 2002, at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Colwell was born in Union County, Georgia, on Wednesday, July 3, 1928, a son of the late Pat Colwell and Hattie Weaver Colwell.  Along with his brothers, Carlton and Junior, he started Colwell Construction Company in 1957 and operated it for many years.  HE was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.  Preceding him in death besides his parents, were four brothers: Pat Junior Colwell, Hughes Colwell, Bud Colwell, and Leon Colwell.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Tanner Colwell, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi and Chad Gasaway, of Canton; grandson, Devin Cole Gasaway; brother, Carlton Colwell, of Blairsville; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 29, 2002, at 2:00 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Earl Bishop, Rev. John Herrin, Rev. Stacy Dyer, and Minister Terry Stuart officiating.  Special music for the services was presented by John Gurley and Rev. Earl and Idalu Bishop.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Newt Miller, Eric England, Bill Hutson, Wayne Abercrombie, Hoyt Townsend, and Joel Poston.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

mrs. bessie owenby brown

 

Mrs. Bessie Owenby Brown, age 86, of Crescent Road, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2002 in the Fannin Regional Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Brown was born on January 3, 1916 in Union County, the daughter of the late Lum Owenby and the late Minnie Rich Owenby.  Mrs. Brown was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Brown in 1995.

Surviving Mrs. Brown are four daughters, Maybell Houser of Arnoldsville, GA, Grapelle Rowlins, Dollie Burrell, both of Blairsville, Tina Joyce Warren of Naples, FL, two sons, Fred Berry Brown and Jerry Brow King, both of Blairsville; two sisters, Nela Lang of Gainesville, Estell Boyer of Leighchester, NC; nineteen grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 26, 2002 at 2 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Abernathy and Rev. Tommy Jones officiating. 

Special music was presented by the Kelley Trio and Mildred Lecroy.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Mike Southerland, Freddie Brown, Tommy Murphy, Joe Southerland, Bill Houser, Bobby Houser, Thomas Brown, and David Brown.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Donald, Shannon Brown and Darren Jones.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

franklin bruce hood

 

Mr. Franklin Bruce Hood, age 82, of Richard Russell Hwy, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, Sept 28, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Hood was born on Feb. 10, 1920 in Union County, the son of the late Harlison Hood and the late Dessie Collins Hood.  Mr. Hood was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was retired from the Union County School System where he drove a bus for thirty three years of his forty two years of service.  He was a member of the Choestoe Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Hood are his loving wife of fifty nine years, Bonnie Cain Hood of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ernest Rogers of Blairsville; two brothers, Tommy Ray Hood and Jack Wayne Hood both of Tampa, FL; two grandchildren, Wesley and Wendy Rogers of Blairsville and Wade Rogers of Blairsville; one great grandchild, Ryan Rogers; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Choestoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Dick Stillwell, Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. B.A. Buchannan officiating.  Special music was presented by the church choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers; Steve Green, Richard Charles Dyer, Harold Dyer, R. Neal Collins, Clyde Collins and Richard Corn.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

george william fair

 

Mr. George William (better known as Bill) Fair, age 71, of Heritage Hills Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 282, 2002 in the Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, GA following injuries received in an automobile accident.  Mr. Fair was born on April 25, 1931 in Union County, the son of the late Lloyd Fair and the late Minnie Conley Fair.  Mr. Fair was a Union County native and was a veteran of the U.S. Airforce in the Korean War.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Helms Fair in 2001.  Mr. Fair was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Fair are one daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Steve Norris of Flowery Branch, GA; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Randy Fair of Murfreesboro, TN, Greg Fair of Athens, GA, David Fair of Macon, Chris and Nicole Fair of Hapeville, GA; one sister, Frances Partin of Blairsville; four brothers, Tommy Fair of Athens, Cecil Fair of Blairsville, Harold Fair of Blairsville, Joe Fair of Blairsville; three grandchildren, Stephanie Compton, Stacie Brookshire and William Fair; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. George Cline and Rev. Danny Parris officiating.  Special music was presented by Brent Cochran.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Kenny Fair, Eddy Partin, Holger Brandes, Wayne Fair, Cecil Lance and Don Wyckoff.  Graveside services and interment followed at 3:00 p.m. from the College Park Cemetery in College Park, GA.
