Mr.
James “Bud” Nichols, age 78, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Sunday,
September 27, 1998 at his home.
Mr. Nichols
was born Monday, June 7, 1920, in Union County, Georgia, a son of the late Joseph Porter Nichols and Hettie Thomas
Nichols. He was a veteran of World War 11,
and served in the US Army. Mr. Nichols
has lived in this area for most of his life, and was a member of
Blairsville
Christian Center. Mr. Nichols was a
retired housing constructor.
Survivors
include his wife, Vena Pat Satterfield Nichols, of Blairsville,
daughter and
son-in-law, Jean and Tommy Rogers, daughter, Micah Nichols; son and
daughter in
law, Tim and Julia Nichols, and daughter, Jackie Nichols, all of
Blairsville;
daughter, Jamie N. Burbage, of Young Harris; brothers, Lee Nichols, of
Blairsville; frank Quince Nichols, of Roswell; sisters, Belle Brown, of
Young
Harris, and Vivian Lance, of
Blairsville; 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren also survive.
Memorial
services were held Tuesday, September 29, 1998 at
11 a.m. from Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Horace Potts, and Rev.
Wofford
Kelley officiating. In lieu of flowers,
the family suggests memorials be made to The American Diabetes
Foundation.

Dr.
John Joseph Kennedy, age 66, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Tuesday,
September 27, 1998 in Union County, Georgia.
Dr. Kennedy
was born in Cleveland County, North Carolina, on Friday, May 6, 1932, a
son of
the late Horace G. Kennedy and Vera Mull Kennedy. Dr.
Kennedy had been living in Blairsville
for five years, coming here from Jacksonville, Florida.
He was a physician, and a member of the bar
of Michigan and Florida. Dr. Kennedy had
medical licenses in California, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, and
Georgia. He was a member of MENSA.
Surviving
are his children: John P. Kennedy, of Tucson, AZ; Daniel O. Kennedy, of
Atlanta; Brian T. Kennedy, of Alexandria, VA; and Colleen M. Kennedy,
of
Shelby, NC; and sister, Ann Brewer, of Rutherfordton, NC;
grandchildren, Connor
Daniel Kennedy; a cousin, patsy Parker, also survive along with many
friends
and other relatives.
Visitation
at the funeral home was held Wednesday night, September
30, 1998 at Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. Memorials
services were held Friday, October
2, 1998 in Shelby, North Carolina.

Robert Lionel Lajoie, age 66, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Monday,
September 28, 1998 in Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville.
Mr. Lajoie
was born Monday, January 11, 1932, in Hillsboro County, New Hampshire,
a son of
the late George Lajoie and Ernstine LaPointe Lajoie.
He was a veteran of the US Air Force. R.
Lajoie was retired from the computer
manufacturing industry, working in the field of business practice
advisory.

John G. Ownbey, age 73, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday,
September 28,
1998 in Union County, Georgia.
Mr. Ownbey
was born Thursday, March 12, 1925 in Union County, Georgia, a son of
the late
Porter William Ownbey and Lilly Galloway Ownbey. Mr.
Ownbey was a veteran of the US Army and
served during World War 11. Mr. Ownbey
had been employed with Tennessee Valley Authority for over 30 years,
specializing in the field of land management.
He was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church. Mr.
Ownbey was preceded in death by several
brothers and sisters: Beulah Frasure, Frank E. Ownbey, Ethel M. Hunter,
Lee P.
Ownbey, Edna O. Erwin, Ruby s. Lund, and Woodrow W. Ownbey.
Surviving are
his wife, Minnie Cordell Ownbey, of the home; son and daughter-in-law,
Roger G.
and Nita B. Ownbey, of Conner, GA; daughter and son-9n-law, Karen O.
and James
D. Jackson, MC, of Gainesville, GA; sister, Carrie O. Anderson, of
Warne, NC; 5
grandchildren: John Chadwick Ownbey, Brandon Kyle Ownbey, Barby
McKinley
Jackson, Lewis Braselton Jackson, and James William Jackson; nieces and
nephews, and a host of friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, September 30, 1998 at
2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev.
Mark
Towery, Jr., and Horace Potts officiating.
Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Gerald, Rex, Danny, and Carson Ownbey, Steve Foster, and
Tim
Odom. Interment was in ivy Log Baptist
Church Cemetery.

Mrs.
Dessie A. Atkins, age 96, of Blairsville, Georgia, passes away Sunday,
September 27, 1998, in Union County.
Mrs. Atkins
was born in Union County, Georgia, on Saturday, June 17, 1902, a
daughter of
the William Brackett and Zadie Ann Mason Brackett.
She was a homemaker and a life long resident
of Union County. Mrs. Atkins was a
member of providence Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by several members of her family; her
son,
William R. Atkins, in 1918; daughter, Josephine Atkins Latham, in 1968,
and her
husband, Howard C. Atkins, in 1984.
Survivors
include her daughter and son-in-law, Almarie and Manley Hamby;
daughter, Mary
Belle Atkins; daughter and son-in-law, Anna M. and jack Martin; and son
and
daughter-in-law, Howard and Liz Atkins; all of Blairsville. Eleven grandchildren, eighteen great
grandchildren, and some great great great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, September 29, 1998 at 2
p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev.
Dean Head
and Rev. David Atkins officiating. Special
music was presented by Ricky and Jeanie Anderson, Dorothy Dockery, and
Cheryl
Hamby. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Glen Hamby, Roy Hamby, Terry Atkins, Joey Atkins, Royce
Hamby, and
Jody Anderson. Interment was in
Providence Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs.
Baird, daughter of the late John and Nora Gregory, passes away Friday,
August
7, 198, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended
illness. A native of Blairsville, Mrs.
Baird had lived
in Jackson County for most of her life.
She was a retired telephone operator with Southern Bell and
Alltel Phone
Companies. She was a member of Walnut
Fork Baptist Church. Mrs. Baird was
preceded in death by her husband, Paul Henery Baird.
Survivors
include her son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Shirley Baird,
Braselton;
daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Tony Thompson, Braselton;
grandchildren,
Marty Baird, Anna Thompson and Kabot Thompson, all of Braselton; and
great
grandchild, Katie Baird, Braselton. many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 1998a
at 3 p.m. at the Little-Davenport Funeral Home of Braselton. Rev. Tim Strickland will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Fork Baptist Church
Cemetery.
