Marie Hansel Rich Guffey

 

Mrs. Marie Hansel Rich Guffey, age 82, of School Circle in Blairsville, passed away on Sunday September 29, 2003 at her home.  Mrs. Guffey was born on November 12, 1929 in Union County, the daughter of the late Jim Rich and the late Julie Colwell Rich.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She was preceded in death by her husband, George Guffey; two daughters, Darlene and Diane Guffey and a son, Roger Dale Guffey.  Mrs. Guffey was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Guffey are a grandson, Timmy Burch of Blairsville; one sister, Jan Nelson of Blairsville; one brother, David Rich of Blairsville; nephew, Mike Arnold; nieces, Jackie Arnold and Martha Hamby, all of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 from the Blairsville City Cemetery with Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Wofford Kelley officiating.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Mike Arnold, Johnny (Pee Wee) Owenby, Doug Chastain and Charles Loudermilk.  Interment followed in the Blairsville City Cemetery.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of the arrangements.

Wanda goodwin

 

Mrs. Wanda Goodwin, age 76, of Blairsville, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Goodwin was born on Saturday, January 15, 1927, in Spalding County, GA., a daughter of the late Jessie McMichen and Flora Snow McMichen.  She had been living in this area since 1998, moving here from Atlanta.  Mrs. Goodwin had been a waitress and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her husband, David W. Whitaker, of Blairsville; daughter, Tonya Gale Ballard, of LaGrange, GA; daughter, Kathy Ann Stewart, of Blairsville; daughter, Cindy Marie Galloway, of Loganville, GA; daughter, Diane Anderson, of Hayesville, NC; and son, Don Whitaker, of Murphy, NC; thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren also survive, along with many friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 3, 2003 at 2:30 PM from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Clark Moss and Rev. Ronald Ford officiating.  Special music will be presented by Clara Jean and William Wright.  Following funeral services, the body will be cremated.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

MR. donald ralph whittemore

 

Mr. Donald Ralph Whittemore, age 48 of Blairsville, GA passed away suddenly on Friday, October 3, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Whittemore was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on Sunday, January 9, 1955, a son of the late Donald Whittemore and Ruby Turner Whittemore.  He had worked in the manufacturing of jewelry and had lived in this area for four years.  Mr. Whittemore was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are five sisters: Patricia N. Whittemore, Linda Whittemore, Jean Frances DeSimone, Debra Lou Jengo, and Donna Lee Walsh all of Rhode Island; a brother, Michael R. Whittemore, Sr. of Blairsville.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

No local services are planned at this time.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family has suggested contributions to a fund at Appalachian Community Bank in Blairsville, in Donald’s name to help defray the family’s expenses.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

arthur j. smith

 

Mr. Arthur J. Smith, 86, of Blairsville, GA., formerly of Hernando Beach, Florida passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Smith was born in New York County, New York, on Tuesday, January 2, 1917, a son of the late August Smith and Marian Cochrane Smith.  Mr. Smith and his wife had been living in the Blairsville area since 1994, moving here from Hernando Beach, Florida.  Mr. Smith had been the Commander of the Coast Guard Flotilla in Hernando Beach.  He lived and worked for 38 years in New York City for the Port Authority of New York and was a WWII Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Smith, of Blairsville; daughters, Lenore Zulauf, Spring Hill, FL; Bonita Welsh, Russellville, AK; sons, Arthur Smith, Jr., Washington, NJ, Jeffery Paul Smith, Double Oak, TX; 8 grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 3, 2003 at 11 AM from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Father Richard Wise officiating.  Military honors will be presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.  Following the services, the body will be cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to The American Lung Association.

mr. fred patton

 

Mr. Fred E. Patton, age 84 of Jackson, SC, passed away on September 30, 2003.

Mr. Patton was a native of Union County, Georgia, having made Jackson his home for the 44 years.  He was a Baptist and a member of the Young Cane Masonic Lodge #597 F&AM of Blairsville, GA.  An U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, Mr. Patton was retired from the U.S. Army with 20 years of service.  He was also retired from the Operations Department of E.I. DuPont Company at Savannah River Plant with 29 years of service and father of the late Mr. Earl Patton.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie E. Patton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Karl Patton, Warrenville, SC, and Chris and Gwen Patton, Williston, SC; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna and Marc Dartez, Counce, TN, and Brenda Cooper, Jackson, SC; a sister, Annie Lou Worden, Blairsville, GA; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 3, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home with Rev. Edward Newsome and Rev. Randy Smith officiating.  Interment in the Jackson Memorial Cemetery with Full Military Honors and Masonic Rites conducted by the Hopewell Masonic Lodge #127 AFM.  Honorary pallbearers were members of the Hopewell Masonic Lodge #127 AFM.

Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
